PCR based molecular technique for identification and discrimination of quarantined and non-quarantined Tilletia sps.

Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) based RAPD profiles, in conjunction with six primers, of Karnal bunt of wheat and rice bunt exhibiting distinct polymorphic DNA. A total of 84 RAPD loci were observed on polyacrylamide gel for both Tilletia sps. Out of 84, 16 loci were found monomorphic, while other 68 loci were unique. Usefulness of random primers was also checked with other seed borne fungal pathogens of wheat and rice. None of primers gave amplification with Magnaporthe grisea, a causative agent of rice blast. However, distinct RAPD profiles were obtained with Alternaria triticina, Fusarium monaliforme, Helminthosporium sativum and Rhizoctonia solani. These six arbitrary primers could distinguish T. indica, a quarantine fungal pathogen from a non-quarantine fungal pathogen, T. barclayana. The two Tilletia sps. could be discriminated not only on the basis of distinct RAPD profiles, but also by presence of few unique gene fragments amplified using all six primers.

Fabrication and Ablation Studies of 4D C/SiC Composite Nozzle Under Liquid Propulsion

4D C/SiC composite nozzle was fabricated using LSI and characterized for mechanical, thermal, and ablation properties. Average flexural and compressive strengths in the Z‐direction were found to be 119 and 110 MP a, while in the U‐, V‐ and W‐directions, they were 99 and 55 MP a, respectively. Coefficient of thermal expansion was found to be varied in the range 0–1.5 × 10 −6 /°C (25–1050°C), while thermal diffusivity was 40–5 mm 2 /s (25–1200°C). Ablation behavior of the nozzle was evaluated under UH 25/N 2 O 4 propulsion system for 30 s. The overall mass erosion rate and the linear ablation rate were found to be 0.119 kg/m 2 s and 0.05 mm/s, respectively.

The two-mode conduction of thermal energy as proposed by Holland has been used to explain the temperature dependence of the phonon conductivity of ${\mathrm{Mg}}_{2}$Sn in the temperature range 4-300\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}K, especially the change in slope at about 80\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}K. The elastic part of Kwok's expression for the resonance-scattering relaxation rate for phonons is shown to account for the magnitude near the conductivity maximum. The present work also shows that practically all the transport of thermal energy is due to transverse phonon.

Reliability studies of gelcast fused silica between organic and inorganic binder systems

Abstract Fused silica ceramics was prepared by using conventional organic binder, mathacrylamide‐ N , N ′‐methylenebisacrylamide ( MAM ‐ MBAM ) system by gelcasting process. Mechanical properties of green bodies were studied as a function of solid loading varying from 60 to 72 vol%. After evaluating the green body mechanical properties, the samples were densified at different sintering temperature from 1200 to 1450°C with definite intervals of 50°C and subjected to flexural strength analysis. Variation in flexural strength with sintering temperature was observed and correlated with the quantity of devitrification of fused silica during sintering. Quantification of devitrified cristobalite was carried out by using 20 wt% rutile (TiO 2 ) as an internal standard by X‐ray diffraction. It was found that, as the cristobalite content increased, flexural strength decreased. Reliability studies were carried out for the samples having maximum flexural strength with and without crystalline content. Reliability studies have shown that for this organic binder system the sample sintered at 1300°C is crystalline free and most reliable product. The mechanical properties and reliability of this product processed with organic binder are compared with inorganic binder system. Results indicate that the sample fabricated using inorganic binder system is exhibiting high Weibull modulus and thus better reliability.

Mapping of surface plasmon polaritons on nanostructured thin film disks using cathodoluminescence imaging

In this paper we report investigations on mapping of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) on nanostructured thin film disks using electron-beam excitation. Square and circular disks with sub-micron characteristic dimensions were patterned using electron-beam lithography. Two-dimensional confinement of SPPs resulted into standing wave patterns that were imaged using cathodoluminescence spectroscopy. Several modes of the disks were identified and were found to be dependent on disk geometry as well as position of the electron beam. Detailed analysis of specific modes is provided using panchromatic imaging of the disks. SPP wavelengths as small as 100 nm are predicted from the dispersion curves of 15 nm thick Ag films. Extremely small mode volumes on disks as small as 65 nm are mapped. Our investigations enhance understanding of light-matter interaction at nanoscale with potential applications in various areas including photonics, optoelectronics, chemical and biological sensing, and next generation optical communication.
