The intracortical myelin content of impulsive choices: results from T1- and T2-weighted MRI myelin mapping

Abstract Delay discounting (DD) refers to a phenomenon that humans tend to choose small-sooner over large-later rewards during intertemporal choices. Steep discounting of delayed outcome is related to a variety of maladaptive behaviors and is considered as a transdiagnostic process across psychiatric disorders. Previous studies have investigated the association between brain structure (e.g. gray matter volume) and DD; however, it is unclear whether the intracortical myelin (ICM) influences DD. Here, based on a sample of 951 healthy young adults drawn from the Human Connectome Project, we examined the relationship between ICM, which was measured by the contrast of T1w and T2w images, and DD and further tested whether the identified associations were mediated by the regional homogeneity (ReHo) of brain spontaneous activity. Vertex-wise regression analyses revealed that steeper DD was significantly associated with lower ICM in the left temporoparietal junction (TPJ) and right middle-posterior cingulate cortex. Region-of-interest analysis revealed that the ReHo values in the left TPJ partially mediated the association of its myelin content with DD. Our findings provide the first evidence that cortical myelination is linked with individual differences in decision impulsivity and suggest that the myelin content affects cognitive performances partially through altered local brain synchrony.

Effects of adjacent bubble on spatiotemporal evolutions of mechanical stresses surrounding bubbles oscillating in tissues

The cavitation dynamics and mechanical stress in viscoelastic tissues, as the primary mechanisms of some ultrasound therapies, are extremely complex due to the interactions of cavitation bubble with adjacent bubbles and surrounding tissues. Therefore, the cavitation dynamics and resultant mechanical stress of two-interacting bubbles in the viscoelastic tissues are numerically investigated, especially focusing on the effects of the adjacent bubble. The results demonstrate that the mechanical stress is highly dependent on the bubble dynamics. The compressive stress and tensile stress are generated at the stage of bubble expansion and collapse stage, respectively. Furthermore, within the initial parameters examined in this paper, the effects of the adjacent bubble will distinctly suppress the radial expansion of the small bubble and consequently lead its associated stresses to decrease. Owing to the superimposition of two stress fields, the mechanical stresses surrounding the small bubble in the direction of the neighboring bubble are smaller than those in other directions. For two interacting cavitation bubbles, the suppression effects of the nearby bubble on both the cavitation dynamics and the stresses surrounding the small bubble increase as the ultrasound amplitude and the initial radius of the large bubble increase, whereas they decrease with the inter-bubble distance increasing. Moreover, increasing the tissue viscoelasticity will reduce the suppression effects of the nearby bubble, except in instances where the compressive stress and tensile stress first increase and then decrease with the tissue elasticity and viscosity increasing respectively. This study can provide a further understanding of the mechanisms of cavitation-associated mechanical damage to the adjacent tissues or cells.

Nonlinear Dynamics and Acoustic Emissions of Interacting Cavitation Bubbles in Viscoelastic Tissues

The cavitation-mediated bioeffects are primarily associated with the dynamic behaviors of bubbles in viscoelastic tissues, which involves complex interactions of cavitation bubbles with surrounding bubbles and tissues. The radial and translational motions, as well as the resultant acoustic emissions of two interacting cavitation bubbles in viscoelastic tissues were numerically investigated. Due to the bubble–bubble interactions, a remarkable suppression effect on the small bubble, whereas a slight enhancement effect on the large one were observed at various acoustic pressures and initial radii of the bubbles. Moreover, as the initial distance between bubbles increases, the strong suppression effect is reduced gradually and it could effectively enhance the nonlinear dynamics of bubbles, exactly as the bifurcation diagrams exhibit a similar mode of successive period doubling to chaos. Correspondingly, the resultant acoustic emissions present a progressive evolution of harmonics, subharmonics, ultraharmonics and broadband components in the frequency spectra. In addition, with the elasticity and/or viscosity of the surrounding medium increasing, both the nonlinear dynamics and translational motions of bubbles were reduced prominently. This study provides a comprehensive insight into the nonlinear behaviors and acoustic emissions of two interacting cavitation bubbles in viscoelastic media, it may contribute to optimizing and monitoring the cavitation-mediated biomedical applications.

Fingertip Blood Collection Point Localization Research Based on Infrared Finger Vein Image Segmentation

In the automatic collection of blood from the fingertip, it is necessary to squeeze the finger to increase bleeding due to the relatively tiny blood vessels and the comparatively small blood volume. Thus, this will cause cell fluid to enter the blood extracted and lead to inaccurate test results. If the vein-dense area of the finger is selected as the blood collection point, the amount of blood that can be extracted will be greatly increased. Due to the poor contrast of the infrared image of finger veins, it is difficult to effectively distinguish the vein area with the traditional segmentation method. Deep learning has made great achievements in image segmentation. However, due to the insufficient dataset of infrared image segmentation of finger veins, deep learning has hardly been applied in the image segmentation of finger veins. In order to solve the above problems, we created the dataset of the infrared image segmentation of finger veins and investigated how to use pyramid structure and mechanism of attention to segment the image of finger veins. We used a locally similar pyramid module to quantify a pixel to a similar degree of other pixels, adopted pyramid fusion module to enhance the obtained multiscale features, and proposed a network integrating distinct features of different weights, the details of which were highlighted. Based on the experimental results, this network shows a better performance compared with other advanced methods. It can better segment the finger vein region and, thereby, ensure the accuracy of blood sampling location.

Establishment and Simulation of 3D Gastric Impedance Detection Model

This paper builds a three-layer electrical impedance imaging (EIT) model. The changes in gastric impedance information in gastric contents and gastric volume of different conductivity were studied in different electrode excitation models. In this paper, the human abdominal cavity model was constructed by using COMSOL MULTIPHYSICS simulation software, and a 48-electrode system was constructed on the outer layer of the model. In the experiment, two models of relative electrode excitation and adjacent electrode excitation were established, and the simulated gastric emptying process was simulated. Secondly, by measuring the voltage and analyzing the data. Finally, the system is evaluated by using the boundary measurement voltage sensitivity δ and the boundary voltage measurement dynamic range Ũ. The analysis shows that the relative electrode excitation model has lower sensitivity and better signal-to-noise ratio for system detection and stability. At the same time, it is proved that more gastric emptying information can be obtained through the three-layer EIT model, which can effectively reflect different relevant impedance information of gastric contents.

Design and Application of Multidimensional Force/Torque Sensors in Surgical Robots: A Review

Multidimensional force sensors have substantially improved the surgical quality of surgical robots. The purpose of this article is to provide a comprehensive review of the literature on the design and application of multidimensional force sensors in various surgical robots. The multidimensional force sensor can monitor the interaction force between the surgical instrument and the soft tissue, enabling doctors to obtain force feedback information in real time during surgery. This can help them improve the accuracy and safety of surgery. This review identifies the importance of sensor classification and performance parameters in surgery for multidimensional force measurement. This review focuses on the integrated design of force sensors and multidimensional force decoupling algorithms. In addition, a fiber Bragg grating multidimensional force sensor for puncture surgery was designed to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method. This review article provides a comprehensive classification and analysis of multidimensional force sensors for surgical robots, which will help researchers to understand the integrated design solutions for different surgical instruments and multidimensional force sensors.

Channel models of body area networks for human motion

The channel characteristics of the body area network are important to transmission rate and transmission robustness. Current explorations mainly concern the channel characteristics in static state of the human body. In this paper, we establish human motion models of sitting to standing, walking and running postures, and calculate the path loss values in 2.4GHz for the models. The experimental results show that the path loss values vary sharply in the process of human movement, which is very helpful to determine the transmission power and design BAN sensor nodes.
