Electrically/optically tunable photo-aligned hybrid nematic liquid crystal Dammann grating

In this Letter, we disclose a Dammann grating (DG) based on the hybrid photo-aligned nematic liquid crystals (LCs). The LC cell is composed of two substrates, wherein the first substrate is treated to provide the homeotropic alignment, and the other substrate is set to provide an in-plane, patterned alignment with a mutually orthogonal easy axis in the neighboring alignment domains. Thus, the fabricated polarization independent DG generates an optical array of equally distributed energy, which is characterized by a diffraction efficiency of more than 58%, a response time <1 ms, and the driving voltage 3 V/μm. Furthermore, the optically active alignment layer provides the optical tunability and reconfigurability for the proposed DG. With these advantageous parameters, these DGs can be applied in modern applications.

Application of Suzuki Cross‐Coupling Reaction Catalyzed by Ligandless Palladium Chloride in the Synthesis of Liquid Crystals

Abstract Palladium chloride–catalyzed Suzuki cross‐coupling reaction was applied to the preparation of highly pure multiring liquid crystals with a biphenyl unit. The optimal reaction condition is the combination of 0.5 mol% PdCl2, pyridine, and K3PO4, which was able to catalyze the cross‐coupling of substituted aryl bromides with substituted trans‐cyclohexylphenylboronic acids to give pure products in 38–87% yields.

Dielectric behaviour of the B₁phase

Dielectric measurements on two different samples formed by banana-shaped molecules and showing a B1 phase were carried out. Three relaxation ranges were detected: a very fast intramolecular motion, the fast reorientation about the long axes and a slow collective process. The data are discussed in relation to known X-ray investigations and dielectric results for homologous samples showing the B2 state. The main difference between B1 and B2 is that in B1 no evidence for ferroelectric order in the short range was detected.

Reduction of 4-trans-alkylcyclohexylcarboxylic Acid and its Ester by NaBH_4/Lewis Acid under Room Temperature

4-trans-alkylcyclohexyl methanol is an important intermediate of the liquid crystal containing ethyl-linkage which is widely used in the TFT-LCD.It is usually obtained by the reduction of its corresponding acid using LiAlH4.The reagent sodium borohydride combined with Lewis acid were used as the reduction system in this work.The effects of the ratio of the reduction agent with Lewis acids and solvents were studied.It was found that the reactions involved TiCl4 achieved the best among TiCl4,AlCl3 and ZnCl2 at the room temperature in dimethylethane(DME).The optimal ratio of reactant with TiCl4 and NaBH4 is 1∶0.73∶2.2(mol).The reduction of the 4-trans-alkylcyclohexyl carboxylic acid or ester to its corresponding alcohol was successful via the NaBH4+TiCl4 system under the mild condition.The yields were 77 % ~ 95 %.

Ferroelectric and switching behavior of poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) copolymer ultrathin films with polypyrrole interface

Thin polypyrrole-poly(styrene sulfonate) acid film is employed as interface layers between both bottom and top metal electrodes of a ferroelectric polymer, poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) copolymer capacitor. The sandwiched structure Titanium∕polypyrrole-poly(styrene sulfonate)∕poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene)∕polypyrrole-poly(styrene sulfonate)∕titanium shows prominent ferroelectric properties even as the thickness of P(VDF-TrFE) film is down to 500Å. The coercive voltage as low as 2.6V is obtained with a remanent polarization of 86mC∕m2 and a switching time of 30μs. The cell remains good ferroelectric properties at 60°C, which is the operating temperature for many electronics. Moreover, the sandwiched structure shows excellent data retention, after more than 1×107 of switching cycles, the remanent polarization remains as high as 69mC∕m2. The soft conductive polymer electrodes not only increase the crystallinity but also enhance the crystal dipole orientation comparing with the conventionally used metal electrodes.

Bistable state in polymer stabilized blue phase liquid crystal

The bistable phenomenon is found in polymer stabilized blue phase liquid crystal. Two stable phases, blue phase and chiral nematic state, are obtained and we succeeded in the switch between these two states through different operation procedures. The mechanism of the bistable phenomenon is discussed, according to which we consider the bistability may widely exist in various polymer stabilized blue phase liquid crystal systems. This work provides some useful insights into the application of polymer stabilized blue phase liquid crystal in bistable devices.

Polarity-dependent bistable optical grating in chiral bent-core nematic liquid crystals

We examined the flexodomains (FDs) in chiral bent-core nematics (BCNs), and demonstrated the morphology changed from parallel stripes in pure BCN to oblique ones in chiral BCNs. While the magnitude of obliqueness angle strongly depended on the concentration of chiral dopant, its sign was determined by the polarity of the driving voltage, thus FDs appeared alternately as symmetrical oblique stripes in the positive and negative half a.c. voltage cycles, respectively. Also the HTP value of chiral dopant in BCNs can be determined based on this phenomenon. The polarity-dependent behavior of FDs can be potentially exploited in photonic devices with a bistable function.

A thermally tunable narrowband selector based on a chiral nematic containing a binary thermosensitive chiral dopant mixture

We employed a thermosensitive chiral dopant (CD), characterized by its thermoinduced change in helical twisting power (HTP) in terms of the handedness and strength, to shift the Bragg reflection band of a CLC. A thermally tunable photonic bandgap (PBG) device was demonstrated using a one-dimensional asymmetric photonic crystal (PC) infiltrated with the CLC as a defect layer. With a temperature controller to shift the PBG of the CLC, two narrow transmission bands can be tuned in the spectrum dominated by the asymmetric PC structure. This optical device can find applications as a tunable narrowband wavelength selector or an intensity controller.
