A downlink beamforming assisted by locally positioned communication devices

Recently, multiple cell types with overlapping coverage have been deployed simultaneously to increase cellular network capacity. Cross-tier interference is one of the key technical challenges in the use of this method. A simple and practical beamforming scheme assisted by locally positioned communication devices for the downlink of a multi-cell wireless hierarchical cell structure system is proposed in this paper to maximize the capacity of the embedded small cell and simultaneously ensure minimal impact on the performance of existing macrocells. The locally positioned communication devices can be implemented with low complexity and at low cost and can continuously provide helpful and accurate information to base stations for the proper configuration of geographical cell coverage, allowing neighboring cells to cooperate effectively with each other. Simulation results verify that the proposed scheme can provide a significant gain over conventional systems not using the proposed algorithm. Copyright © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Air-Ground Channel Modeling Method Using Digital Elevation Data

In this paper, we propose an air-ground channel modeling method using digital elevation model data for unmanned aircraft system (UAS) communication systems. Until now, the air-ground channel models for the UAS communication system were derived based on the measurements from urban, suburban, mountainous, hilly, and over-water environments in the USA. However, they are disadvantageous when it comes to predicting the accurate channel attenuation considering the real terrain environments. In this study, the path loss value is estimated by extracting the altitude information of the cross-section between a transmitter and receiver and applying an appropriate channel attenuation model. The proposed method is validated by comparing the estimated results with actual flight test results.

Beamforming strategy using adaptive beam patterns and power control for common control channel in hierarchical cell structure networks

Beamforming techniques have been successfully utilized for traffic channels in order to solve the interference problem. However, their use for control channels has not been sufficiently investigated. In this paper, a (semi-) centralized beamforming strategy that adaptively changes beam patterns and controls the total transmit power of cells is proposed for the performance enhancement of the common channel in hierarchical cell structure (HCS) networks. In addition, some examples of its practical implementation with low complexity are presented for two-tier HCS networks consisting of macro and pico cells. The performance of the proposed scheme has been evaluated through multi-cell system-level simulations under optimistic and pessimistic interference scenarios. The cumulative distribution function of user geometry or channel quality has been used as a performance metric since in the case of common control channel the number of outage users is more important than the sum rate. Simulation results confirm that the proposed scheme provides a significant gain compared to the random beamforming scheme as well as conventional systems that do not use the proposed algorithm. Finally, the proposed scheme can be applied simultaneously to several adjacent macro and pico cells even if it is designed primarily for the pico cell within macro cells.

Convolutional Neural Network-Based Drone Detection and Classification Using Overlaid Frequency-Modulated Continuous-Wave (FMCW) Range–Doppler Images

This paper proposes a novel drone detection method based on a convolutional neural network (CNN) utilizing range-Doppler map images from a frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) radar. The existing drone detection and identification techniques, which rely on the micro-Doppler signature (MDS), face challenges when a drone is small or located far away, leading to performance degradation due to signal attenuation and faint (MDS). In order to address these issues, this paper suggests a method where multiple time-series range-Doppler images from an FMCW radar are overlaid onto a single image and fed to a CNN. The experimental results, using actual data for three different drone sizes, show significant performance improvements in drone detection accuracy compared to conventional methods.

Performance Analysis of an LMS Based Adaptive Feedback Canceller for On-Channel Repeaters

An on-channel repeater (OCR) performing simultaneous reception and transmission at the same frequency is beneficial to improve spectral efficiency and coverage. In an OCR, it is important to cancel the feedback interference caused by imperfect isolation between the transmit and receive antennas, and least mean square (LMS) based adaptive filters are commonly used for this purpose. In this paper, we analyze the performance of the LMS based adaptive feedback canceller in terms of its transient behavior and the steady-state mean square error (MSE). Through a theoretical analysis, we derive iterative equations to compute transient MSEs and provide a procedure to simply evaluate steady-state MSEs for the adaptive feedback canceller. Simulation results performed to verify the theoretical MSEs show good agreement between the proposed theoretical analysis and the empirical results.

Cross-Layer Resource Allocation Using Video Slice Header Information for Wireless Transmission Over LTE

In this paper, cross-layer resource allocation methods for wireless video transmission are proposed. We propose two practical metrics to measure the relative importance of each forward error correction (FEC) block to the user's quality of experience. They can be obtained from the header information, and require no overhead bits or amendment of the header format of the existing standard video codec. We discuss adaptive modulation and coding scheme allocation, and adaptive energy allocation for the FEC blocks of a group of pictures. We also provide low-complexity resource allocation solutions. In both approaches, we consider two types of slice packetization, which affect the priority of FEC blocks. The proposed cross-layer resource allocation methods have significant performance gain over equal error protection, and similar performance to more complicated algorithms.

Design of synchronization preambles for LTE-Advanced D2D communications

In this paper, an efficient structure of device-to-device (D2D) synchronization preamble is proposed to meet the tightened time and frequency synchronization requirements for LTE-Advanced D2D communication. The proposed preamble structure is transmitting signals only at odd subcarriers, and not transmitting signals at the other subcarriers to minimize the effect of inter-carrier interference. According to the simulation results, the proposed preamble structure provides improved time offset estimation performance compared to the repeated primary synchronization signals without degrading frequency offset estimation performance.

Air-ground channel model selection method for UAS communications using digital elevation data

In this paper, we propose an air-ground channel model selection method for unmanned aircraft system (UAS) communication using digital elevation model (DEM) data. Recently, the air-ground channel models for the UAS communication system were derived based on the measurement results in various environments such as urban, suburban, mountainous, hilly, and over water environments. When simulating the performance of UAS communication systems, there is an issue to select a specific channel model among a plurality of channel models for the given terrain environments. In the proposed method, systematic channel model selection method based on the relative altitude distribution of the area for simulation and the relative altitude distributions of areas for channel model developments. The simulation results show the proposed method works well in various environments.
