Boiler modification cost survey for sulfur oxides control by fuel substitution. Environmental protection technology series (final)

Results are presented of a study to identify capital costs associated with converting industrial and utility boilers from conventional high-sulfur fossil fuels to low-sulfur products from selected coal conversion processes. The boilers of concern include all industrial and utility size equipment in the 10 to the 7th power to 10 to the 10th power Btu/hr capacity range. The substitute fuels include solvent refined coal (SRC) in the solid and hot liquid (melted) phases as well as lower-Btu gas. The cost assessment methods used in the study showed that conversion to liquid SRC is the most expensive alternative. Converting coal-fired boilers to solid SRC is the least expensive alternative for these types of boilers. Between the costs of converting to SRC in either phase lie those costs for converting to the gaseous fuels. A significant result of the study is that the costs of all conversion strategies increase exponentially with boiler capacity: cost appears to be a weak function of boiler design. (GRA)

Observed suppression of ozone formation at extremely high temperatures due to chemical and biophysical feedbacks

Ground level ozone concentrations ([O 3 ]) typically show a direct linear relationship with surface air temperature. Three decades of California measurements provide evidence of a statistically significant change in the ozone-temperature slope (Δ m O3- T ) under extremely high temperatures (> 312 K). This Δ m O3- T leads to a plateau or decrease in [O 3 ], reflecting the diminished role of nitrogen oxide sequestration by peroxyacetyl nitrates and reduced biogenic isoprene emissions at high temperatures. Despite inclusion of these processes in global and regional chemistry-climate models, a statistically significant change in Δ m O3- T has not been noted in prior studies. Future climate projections suggest a more frequent and spatially widespread occurrence of this Δ m O3- T response, confounding predictions of extreme ozone events based on the historically observed linear relationship.

Early Paleocene Magnetostratigraphy and Revised Biostratigraphy of the Ojo Alamo Sandstone and Lower Nacimiento Formation, San Juan Basin, New Mexico, USA

The lower Paleocene Ojo Alamo Sandstone and Nacimiento Formation from the San Juan Basin (SJB) in northwestern New Mexico preserve arguably the best early Paleocene mammalian record in North America and is the type location for the Puercan (Pu) and Torrejonian (To) North American Land Mammal ages (NALMA). However, the lack of precise depositional age constraints for the Ojo Alamo Sandstone and lower Nacimiento Formation has hindered our understanding of the timing and pacing of mammalian community change in the SJB following the Cretaceous-Paleogene mass extinction. Here we produced a high-resolution age model for the Ojo Alamo Sandstone and lower Nacimiento Formation combining magnetostratigraphy and 40Ar/39Ar geochronology spanning the first ~3.5 Myr of the Paleocene. Mean sediment accumulation rates during C29n were relatively low (<50 m/Myr) and equalized from basin center to basin margin indicating an accommodation minimum; sediment accumulation rates approximately double (> 90 m/Myr) during C28r and are highest in the basin center and lowest on basin margin indicating high accommodation and an increase in basin subsidence near the C29n/C28r boundary (~64.96 Ma). Puercan fossil localities were restricted to C29n, Torrejonian 1 localities to C28n, and lower Torrejonian 2 localities to C27r. Our revised age model for the SJB suggests that the first appearance of To1 mammals may have been diachronous across North America, with the Torrejonian 1 mammals first appearing in the north (Montana and North Dakota) during C29n, then in middle latitudes (Utah) in C28r, and lastly in southern North America (New Mexico) in C28n.

Crystal balls and current affairs: the financial challenge of a changing climate to the oil and gas industry

Despite debate, the fact remains that the climate is changing. When considering the factors that determine potential financial impacts and losses that upstream oil and gas business could suffer due to a changing climate, the issues may primarily appear to be related to weather and geography. On closer examination, the factors that determine the severity of the impacts and losses are largely determined by the design and interdependencies of the financial and economic mechanisms of risk management. There is an increasing consensus in the insurance industry that the challenge presented by climate change, along with the increasing power of climate models, will result in far-reaching changes to the presently accepted practices of risk transfer. This extended abstract describes the increased power of climate models and the improved understanding of the present levels of under-adaptation when viewed from the position of investors in large-scale and long-lived oil and gas assets in Australia. It then looks at risk transfer models and examines potential limitations that have been identified due to the focus on ad-hoc post-disaster recovery when compared to a cost-effective pre-disaster resilience approach. The extended abstract then discusses how changes in the risk transfer approach could affect the financial aspects of an oil and gas business, such as the cost of borrowing, self-insurance, capital allocation and planning.

Multibeam survey remarks for the oil and gas industry

The oil and gas industry has a strong demand of subsea knowledge in order to determine seafloor characteristics, to provide secure installation of underwater structures, to check its conditions, among others. In this context, acoustic methods have been providing essential information. In the study case presented here, a multibeam system was used for pipeline inspection at two different water depths and the results obtained allowed the discussion on how acoustic changes on the signal can affect what is observed from the survey. The main objective is to emphasize the relevance of understanding the needs of the offshore industry, the capabilities of the equipment available and its limitations aiming to take the most of it.
