Fabrication of Highly Transmitting LaGdHf₂O₇ Ceramics

Transparent LaGdHf 2 O 7 ceramic was successfully prepared by reactive sintering using vacuum sintering at 1900°C for 6 h. The resultant ceramic has an in‐line transmittance of 74% at 1100 nm and the density was measured to be 8.37 g/cm 3 . The average grain size was about 10 μm with uniform structure.

Highly transparent yttria ceramics with Nb₂O₅/Ta₂O₅ as novel sintering additives by pressureless vacuum sintering

Abstract Highly transparent yttria ceramics were fabricated by pressureless sintering with Nb 2 O 5 or Ta 2 O 5 as a novel sintering additive. The optical transmittance, microstructural evolution, and thermo‐mechanical properties of the samples were investigated. The optimal doping concentrations of Nb 2 O 5 and Ta 2 O 5 are 0.3 and 0.2 at.%, respectively, which are much lower compared to those of previously reported counterparts. The transmittance of the sample with 0.3 at.% Nb 2 O 5 reaches 81.6% at 1100 nm and 72.4% at 400 nm (2 mm in thickness), similar transmittance was obtained in the sample with 0.2 at.% Ta 2 O 5 . The microhardness (∼7 GPa), fracture toughness (∼0.85 MPa·m 1/2 ), and biaxial strength (∼200 MPa) of the present samples were confirmed to be comparable or even better compared to those of previously reported transparent yttria ceramics fabricated by pressureless sintering. Furthermore, the present samples, by virtue of the low doping concentrations, possessed relatively high thermal conductivity values (>10 W/m·K), which substantially guaranteed high thermal shock resistance.

High‐temperature mechanical and thermal properties of Ca₁₋_xSr_xZrO₃solid solutions

Abstract Perovskite oxides are promising thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) materials but their thermophysical properties still need to be further improved before commercial applications. In this work, mechanical/thermal properties of calcium‐strontium zirconate solid solutions (Ca 1− x Sr x ZrO 3 ) are investigated. Comparing to the end‐compounds CaZrO 3 and SrZrO 3 , the solid solutions achieve the enhanced thermal expansion coefficient, decreased thermal conductivity as well as good high‐temperature mechanical properties. The experimental thermal conductivities of Ca 1− x Sr x ZrO 3 ( x = 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8) are in the range of 1.76‐1.94 W·(m·K) −1 at 1073 K, being lower than that of the yttria‐stabilized zirconia (YSZ). At the same time, their thermal expansion coefficients (10.75 × 10 −6 ‐11.23 × 10 −6 /K at 1473 K) are comparable to that of YSZ. Moreover, the Young's moduli of Ca 0.8 Sr 0.2 ZrO 3 , Ca 0.6 Sr 0.4 ZrO 3 , Ca 0.4 Sr 0.6 ZrO 3 , and Ca 0.2 Sr 0.8 ZrO 3 at 1473 K are 70.7%, 69.4%, 68.8%, and 71.1% of the corresponding values at room temperature, respectively. The good high‐temperature mechanical and thermal properties ensure the potential applications of Ca 1− x Sr x ZrO 3 solid solutions as high‐temperature thermal insulation materials including TBCs.

Gd/Y Hydroxide Nanosheets as Highly Efficient T1/T2 MRI Contrast Agents

To develop highly efficient T1/T2 magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agents (CAs), Gd/Y hydroxide nanosheets were synthesized by a simple exfoliation method from layer compounds using sodium polyacrylate (PAA) as a dispersant and stabilizer. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) results revealed the excellent performance of monolayer nanosheets with thicknesses of up to 1.5 nm. The MRI results of the T1 and T2 relaxation times showed that all of the Gd/Y hydroxide nanosheets have high longitudinal and transverse relaxivities (r1 and r2). In particular, the 10% Gd-LRH nanosheets exhibited excellent MRI performance (r1 = 103 mM−1 s−1, r2 = 372 mM−1 s−1), which is rarely reported. Based on the relationship between the structure of 10% Gd-LRH nanosheets and their MRI performances, and the highly efficient MRI of spaced Gd atoms in the nanosheets, a special model to explain the outstanding MRI performance of the 10% Gd-LRH nanosheets is suggested. The cytotoxicity assessment of the 10% Gd-LRH nanosheets, evaluated by CCK-8 assays on HeLa cells, indicated no significant cytotoxicity. This study presents a significant advancement in 2D nanomaterial MRI CA research, with Gd-doped nanosheets positioned as highly efficient T1/T2 MRI CA candidates.
