Distribution of the Microbial Community Structure in Sulfur-Based Autotrophic Denitrification Columns

Substrate-dependent evolution of a bacterial community capable of transforming nitrate was examined in sulfur-based autotrophic denitrification columns. The 16S rRNA genes and denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) analysis revealed that the initial bacterial consortium was well adapted to column operation time and distribution of nitrate concentration. In the lower part of a 200-day operated column where nitrate was introduced, a bacterial strain designated OTU DE-1 was abundant, occupying 92% of the community. The species was identified as Thiobacillus denitrificans with a similarity of 97% by BLAST search. A heterotroph designated as OTU DE-2 showing a similarity of 94% to Cenibacterium arsenoxidans was then enriched in the middle part of the column occupying 82% of the community, indicating the presence of organic electron donors. Interestingly, OTU DE-5 with a similarity of 98% to Chlorobium limicola, which is commonly present in hydrogen sulfide-rich environments, was found in the upper part of the column where sulfate level was high with little nitrate. The microbial community was consistent with observed concentrations of nitrate, nitrite, and sulfate with column height and operation time.

Periodic change in coastal microbial community structure associated with submarine groundwater discharge and tidal fluctuation

Abstract Coastal areas where submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) occurs are active mixing zones with characteristic biogeochemical and ecological functions. In this study, we investigated the microbial community associated with the changes in groundwater discharge flux at a coastal beach site on Jeju Island, South Korea. We performed water chemistry analyses, 16S rRNA gene‐based pyrosequencing, and microbial community statistical analyses on coastal water samples systematically collected as functions of tidal stage and distance from the groundwater discharge point. We also carried out groundwater level monitoring and numerical simulation of the coastal aquifer to reproduce tidally induced variations in the SGD rates of the study site. Pyrosequencing and statistical analyses revealed a periodic shift in the microbial communities in the coastal waters as functions of tidal stage and SGD rates. Interestingly, the community structures in the samples collected at flood and ebb tide were markedly different, despite the similarities in their water chemistry. Groundwater simulation and canonical correspondence analyses suggest that groundwater discharging at higher velocities at ebb tide can detach and transport subsurface bacteria from the aquifer to the coastal water body, resulting in an increase in facultative anaerobes in the ebb tide samples. In addition, release of the sand‐attached bacteria as a result of particle resuspension and flushing of shallow subsurface bacteria in the intertidal zone could contribute to shaping the relative abundance of the coastal microbial community. We conclude that SGD rate is an important factor influencing the dynamics of the bacterial community structure at the coastal zone of the study site.

Potential utilization of hazardous mining wastes in the production of lightweight aggregates

Lightweight aggregates from mixtures of gold tailing, red mud and waste limestone were produced using a high-temperature sintering process. Raw materials were quantitatively analyzed, and hazardous materials were identified by chemical analysis. An oxide system corresponding to the major components of the mining waste was carefully designed based on the CaO–FeOx–Al2O3–SiO2 quaternary system similar to lightweight aggregates. Sintering, softening and melting behaviour of the sample was investigated to optimize the sintering conditions. After heating, specimens were analyzed to clarify its sintering mechanism. Phase change during sintering was observed by X-ray diffraction, and the effect of temperature on the structural unit changes of the specimen was confirmed by Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy. Microscopic analysis by scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive X-ray analysis was carried out to identify the morphological changes of the sample. Physical properties of the specimen were measured, and the compressive strength was improved with less water absorption.

일반적으로 인쇄회로기판(Printed Circuit Board, PCB)은 다양한 종류의 플라스틱에 세라믹과 금속 성분이 복합적으로 함유되어 있는 것으로 알려져 있다. 따라서 환경적인 보호뿐만 아니라 자원의 재활용의 관점에서 PCB 스크랩으로부터 금속 성분을 분리해내는 것은 중요하다. 본 연구에서는 PCB의 재활용 기술에 대한 특허와 논문을 분석하였다. 분석 범위는 1980년~2011년까지의 미국, 유럽연합, 일본, 한국 등 다양한 나라의 등록/공개된 특허와 SCI 논문으로 제한하였다. 특허와 논문은 키워드를 사용하여 수집하였고, 기술의 정의에 의해 필터링 하였다. 특허와 논문의 동향은 연도, 국가, 기업, 기술에 따라 분석하여 나타내었다. It is generally well known that PCB (Printed Circuit Board) is an electric component assembled by various metals mixed with plastics and ceramics. Accordingly, it is very important to extract metallic components from used PCBs from the point of view of recycling of used resources as well as an environmental protection. In this paper, patents and paper on the recycling technologies of PCB were analyzed. The range of search was limited in the open patents of USA (US), European Union (EP), Japan (JP), Korea (KR) and SCI journals from 1980 to 2011. Patents and journals were collected using key-words searching and filtered by filtering criteria. The trends of the patents and journals was analyzed by the years, countries, companies, and technologies.

The Current Status of Cyanide Uses, Regulations, and Treatment in Gold Mining

전세계적으로 시안화법은 일차 광물 혹은 정광으로부터 금을 회수하기 위해 널리 사용되어 왔다. 그러나 이 공정에서 발생하는 다량의 유독한 잔사 및 시안 함유 폐액은 주변 환경 및 생태계에 심각한 문제를 야기할 수 있어 그 사용에 대해 문제가 제기되어 왔으므로 시안화법 이용 시 반드시 시안 함유 폐액의 적절한 처리가 필요하다. 본 연구에서는 금광으로부터 금을 회수하기 위한 습식제련공정인 시안화법과 연계하여 시안 처리 공정을 설계하기 위한 기초연구로서 금 제련에 사용되는 시안화합물의 사용, 규제 및 처리 기술의 국내외 현황을 분석하였다. 또한 무배출 금 회수 및 처리 공정을 설계하기 위한 생물학적 공정에 대하여 소개하였다. Cyanidation has been used worldwide to recover gold from primary ore or concentrate. The use of cyanide is however becoming an emerging issue because of the toxic residue and wastewater made from the process. The cyanide-containing wastewater should be treated properly, obeying the environmental standard and regulations. In the present article, the domestic and international uses, regulations, and treatment technologies of cyanide in gold mining were investigated as a feasibility study to develop a cyanide treatment process as well as the cyanidation process. A biological cyanide treatment process to develop a zeroemission gold recovery and wastewater treatment process was also briefly introduced.

Behaviors of Lead and Zinc in Top Submerged Lance (TSL) Plant at Sukpo Zinc Refinery

The Sukpo Zinc Refinery of Young Poong Cooperation (YPC) has recovered zinc and lead from zinc residue by using top submerged lance (TSL) technology since 2007. This recycling operation, named the "TSL Plant", was designed to operate 2 furnaces each equipped with one top submerged lance. The operation performance shows good metal recoveries. The plant is currently measuring oxygen pressure in its slag bath to respond to the varying slag bath conditions instantly. This paper describes the behaviors of lead and zinc acquired by determining the oxygen pressure in the slag bath and the results of measurements are compared with those of the thermodynamic calculations.
