Genetic Variability and Association of Traits in Mutant Lines of Rice (Oryza sativa L.) for Submergence Tolerance

Present investigation was carried out with 240 mutant lines developed from different combination of gamma rays and ethyl methyl sulfonate on three rice varieties i.e FR13A, FR13B and Labella along with three untreated checks (FR13A, FR13B and Labella). These were evaluated for their survival percentage under submerged condition and yield potential along with 9 other morpho-physiological traits using Type 2 modified augmented design during Kharif season of 2017 in the agroclimatic region of north bihar, India. Analysis of variance revealed highly significant differences among the mutant lines for all morpho-physiological characters under study. Higher magnitude of phenotypic coefficient of variation (PCV), genotypic coefficient of variation (GCV), heritability (broad sense) and genetic advance as percentage of mean were observed for number of tillers per plant, number of fertile tillers per plant, relative shoot elongation and survival percentage, indicating that these traits could be used as selection indices for yield improvement and submergence tolerance. Association study revealed that number of tillers per plant and survival percentage had significant positive high to moderate direct association with grain yield per plant under submergence condition. Thus, these traits may be used as selection criteria in further crop improvement programmes for submergence tolerance.

Twenty genotypes of radish (Raphanus sativus L.) were evaluated in Randomized Block Design during Rabi season 2010-11 at experimental farm of Horticultural Research Centre, Chauras Canpus, H.N.B. Garhwal University, Srinagar (Garhwal), Uttarakhand (India) to assess the correlation coefficient and path coefficient analysis. Root yield/plant was positively correlated with plant height 40 days after sowing, number of leaves 40 days after sowing, plant height 50 days after sowing, number of leaves 50 days after sowing, plant height 60 days after sowing, number of leaves 60 days after sowing, number of leaves 70 days after sowing, total plant height after harvesting, total plant weight and leaf weight, while it showed negative correlation with plant height 70 days after sowing at phenotypic and genotypic levels. The maximum positive direct effects on root yield/plant was observed by number of leaves 70 days after sowing followed by plant height 70 days after sowing and plant height 60 days after sowing, while plant height 50 days after sowing, number of leaves 60 days after sowing, total plant height after harvesting, total plant weight and root length had negative direct effect.

Aspergillus flavus produces aflatoxin and contaminates cereals, oil seeds and nuts, due to the climatic change the aflatoxin infestation is wide spread to various crops Viz: corn, soya, wheat, rice and cotton seeds and nuts. Aflatoxin diet exposure has been observed through the consumption of food stuffs, the contamination of maize, peanuts, and oilseeds. Aflatoxin causes deleterious health effects Viz: human and animal health such as causing cancer, liver damage, diarrhea, dizziness and fever are the common symptoms of aflatoxin contaminated food consumption. The aflatoxin contamination is observed Pre and post-harvest, factors such as temperature, moisture, oxygen, and carbon dioxide, insect and rodent’s infestation, incidence of broken grains or nuts, the cleaning of the product, will increase the incidence of toxigenic fungal load. Transport, waiting time for drying, frying system and storage condition affect. Some countries established maximum concentration for aflatoxin in specific products ranging from ppb to µg levels based on products, consumption pattern and country specific. We have screened essential oils (Eugenol and Rose oil) to test for the inhibition of the Aspergillus flavus growth. These essential oils Eugenol and Rose oil showed the maximum inhibitory activity and further can be used to control Aspergillus flavus.

Sympathetic nerve blocks for posttraumatic stress disorder: an evidentiary review for future clinical trials

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a chronic disorder resulting from exposure to traumatic events. In recent years, sympathetic nerve blocks have gained interest as an emerging treatment modality for PTSD. They have been shown to reduce autonomic dysfunction associated with PTSD symptoms, particularly in refractory and treatment-resistant patients. However, there is limited evidence regarding the technique’s effectiveness in PTSD patients. Therefore, this scoping review was designed to update and summarize the current literature on this topic to inform the design of future clinical trials and studies. Our review of 22 studies (mostly case reports and series) included 1,293 PTSD patients who received sympathetic nerve blocks, primarily military service members and veterans, with a median age of 42.2 years. 0.5% Ropivacaine was the preferred anesthetic, and the right sided stellate ganglion block was the most commonly used technique. Relapse of symptoms was reported commonly, resulting in additional nerve block sessions. Most reported side effects were mild and transient. Despite the encouraging results, we remain cautious in interpreting the benefit of the technique due to the lack of sufficient standardized clinical trial data, heterogeneity in reported results, and the potential for bias in reporting. Future studies should focus on evaluating and addressing the technique’s effectiveness, safety, tolerability, and indications.

Principal component analysis of morpho-physiological traits in mutants lines of rice under submerged condition

Present study was undertaken to identify the principle components for the assessment of genetic diversity and extent and pattern of genetic divergence based on K-mean determination in mutant lines of rice under submerged condition. In this experiment 240 mutant lines of rice along with 3 checks (FR13A, FR13B and Labella) are evaluated in type 2 modified augmented design (MAD2) during Kharif-2017 at rice experimental area of Dr. RPCAU, Pusa, Bihar. Principle component analysis (PCA) showed that first four principle components had >1.00 Eigen value and accounted 80.24% of total variation. Rotated component matrix revealed that each principle component is separately loaded with various submergence tolerant related traits. PC1 was constituted by Tolerance score (0.41). PC2 was maximum correlated with total shoot elongation (0.59) followed by relative shoot elongation (0.48), panicle length (0.43) and plant height (0.42) while, PC3 was maximum correlated with panicle length (0.52) followed by plant height (0.51). Therefore, intensive selection is recommended to bring about rapid improvement of submergence tolerance by selecting lines from PC1, PC2 and PC3. All the 243 lines (including checks) were grouped into 16 clusters. Cluster VIII and X have higher mean value for maximum no. of traits indicating mutant lines from this trait can be used for further improvement. 3-D plot based on top three principle components indicated that Labella (200GY) entry no. 146, Labella (200 GY) entry no. 147, FR13B (350GY) entry no. 165, FR13B (200GY) entry no. 222 were found most divergent mutant lines with FR13B (200GY) entry no. 224, Labella (300GY) entry no. 102 and FR13B (200GY) entry no. 225 which can be utilized effectively in breeding programme for improvement of submergence tolerance.

Acute Pancreatitis, Hypertriglyceridemia, and Diabetic Ketoacidosis: A Life-Threatening Triad

Hypertriglyceridemia (HTG)-induced pancreatitis is a known complication of uncontrolled diabetes mellitus (DM). However, the coexistence of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) and acute pancreatitis in the presence of HTG is rare and presents diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. We present the case of a 42-year-old female with poorly controlled type 2 DM who developed severe HTG-induced pancreatitis complicated by DKA. She initially presented with abdominal pain, metabolic acidosis, and marked hyperglycemia. Subsequent investigations revealed significantly elevated serum triglyceride and lipase levels and characteristic findings of acute pancreatitis on imaging. This case report highlights the complex interplay of metabolic disturbances in diabetes and the importance of timely recognition and tailored management to achieve a successful outcome.
