Magnetoelectric Nanodiscs Enable Wireless Transgene-Free Neuromodulation

Abstract Deep-brain stimulation (DBS) with implanted electrodes revolutionized treatment of movement disorders and empowered neuroscience studies. Identifying less invasive alternatives to DBS may further extend its clinical and research applications. Nanomaterial-mediated transduction of magnetic fields into electric potentials offers an alternative to invasive DBS. Here, we synthesize magnetoelectric nanodiscs (MENDs) with a core-double shell Fe 3 O 4 -CoFe 2 O 4 -BaTiO 3 architecture with efficient magnetoelectric coupling. We find robust responses to magnetic field stimulation in neurons decorated with MENDs at a density of 1 µg/mm 2 despite individual-particle potentials below the neuronal excitation threshold. We propose a model for repetitive subthreshold depolarization, which combined with cable theory, corroborates our findings in vitro and informs magnetoelectric stimulation in vivo. MENDs injected into the ventral tegmental area of genetically intact mice at concentrations of 1 mg/mL enable remote control of reward behavior, setting the stage for mechanistic optimization of magnetoelectric neuromodulation and inspiring its future applications in fundamental and translational neuroscience.

Discovering less invasive alternatives to deep brain stimulation could expand its clinical and research applications. These findings set the stage for mechanistic optimization of magnetoelectric neuromodulation towards applications in neuroscience research.

Self‐Assembled Hollow Gyroids with Bicontinuous Mesostructures: A Highly Robust Electrocatalyst Fixation Platform

Abstract The electrochemical degradation of Pt/C in commercial proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) is a major challenge that limits their durability and performance. This degradation mainly arises from carbon corrosion, which facilitates the detachment of electrocatalyst particles that are weakly bound to catalyst supports. Herein, unusually robust hollow gyroid morphologies designed for strong electrocatalyst fixation and extensive surface accessibility during oxygen reduction reactions (ORR) are reported. To obtain self‐assembled gyroid nanostructures using a poly(styrene‐b‐2‐vinylpyridine) (PS‐b‐P2VP) block copolymer, a solvent vapour treatment with dimethylformamide, which is highly selective for the P2VP block, is applied. It is discovered that retaining residual solvent in the gyroid‐forming P2VP microdomain before carbonization is crucial for forming hollow gyroids with embedded electrocatalysts. These hollow gyroid carbon‐Pt (HGC‐Pt) nanostructures exhibit a 3.6‐fold enhancement in electrochemically active surface area compared to solid gyroid carbon (SGC) counterparts. Based on systematic analyses, this exceptional electrochemical stability is attributed to greatly enhanced surface accessibility derived from the hollow geometry, uniform and robust catalyst embedding, and extensive pyridinic nitrogen doping from the P2VP block.

Abstract The Pd‐catalyzed asymmetric addition reaction of solid phase‐supported alcohol with ene‐alkoxyallenes is reported. Combined with the subsequent metal catalysis, this reaction gave access to various monosaccharides with no need for isolation of the intermediates. CO2 hydrogenation to synthetic natural gas with light hydrocarbons on Mn-promoted mesoporous Co3O4-Al2O3 metal oxides

Direct CO2 conversion into synthetic natural gas (SNG, CH4) with simultaneous small production of light paraffinic C2-C4 hydrocarbons to enhance a heating value of SNG was investigated with ordered mesoporous CoMnAl mixed metal oxides (denoted as m-CoMnAl). CO2 hydrogenation activity to form hydrocarbons with small CO byproduct formed by a reverse water gas shift reaction (RWGS) was strongly affected by the MnO2 promoter content in the ordered Co3O4-Al2O3 mesoporous structures. The m-CoMnAl structures with proper amount of Mn promoter were found to be effective to enhance CO2 conversion to methane with small amount of light hydrocarbons formation, which were mainly attributed to the presence of abundant oxygen vacant sites with a stable preservation of the partially oxidized cobalt nanoparticles in the ordered mesoporous Co3O4-Al2O3 structures even under a reductive hydrogenation condition. Selective methanation of CO2 was found to be more favorable on the highly reduced metallic cobalt nanoparticles formed with smaller amount of Mn promoter (m-CoMnAl(0.05)), however, excessive Mn content such as Mn/Co ratio > 1 (m-CoMnAl(1.0)) revealed less structural stability of ordered mesoporous structures with lower CO2 conversion with relatively higher CO selectivity of 1.4 % with lower olefin selectivity through severe phase segregations of the Co-Mn-Al mixed metal oxides with selective formations of MnCO3 phases.
