Synthesis of sulfonamides via copper-catalyzed oxidative C–N bond cleavage of tertiary amines

A copper-catalyzed coupling reaction of sulfonyl chlorides with tertiary amines via the oxidative C-N bond cleavage of tertiary amines was developed. Sulfonamides were synthesized using this strategy in moderate to good yields. The reaction was applicable to various tertiary amines, as well as sulfonyl chlorides.

Herein, we have developed a new approach for the synthesis of indolizine via Cu-catalyzed reaction of pyridine, acetophenone, and nitroolefin under mild conditions in high yields. This reaction involved the formation of C–N and C–C bonds and new indolizine compounds with high stereoselectivity and excellent functional group tolerance.

Determination, residue analysis, risk assessment and processing factors of tebufenozide in okra fruits under field conditions

Abstract BACKGROUND Ensuring the yield, quality, and profitability of okra by preventing and controlling pests with the application of insecticides has increased in the last decade. Some insecticide residues might remain in edible parts of okra (fruits) and lead to several potential human health problems. Therefore, research on the residue behaviour, risk assessment and removal approach of insecticides on okra fruits is important for food safety, together with the proper application and residual elimination of insecticides in okra. RESULTS A simple liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS) method was established and validated for determining the tebufenozide residues in okra fruits. The recoveries of tebufenozide in okra fruits were >72% with relative standard deviations of 0.6 to 6.1%. The dissipation rates of tebufenozide were different in okra fruits cultivated under open land and glasshouse field conditions because of the discriminating humidity and temperature conditions. The dietary intake of the tebufenozide residues from okra fruit consumption for Chinese consumers was fairly low, with approximately no potential health risk. The processing factor values of washing, blanching, washing + blanching and soaking were all less than one, which indicated that these processes could effectively reduce the residual hydrazide in the okra fruit. CONCLUSION The developed method for analysing tebufenozide in okra fruits was applicable for field studies on this insecticide. The potential health risk of tebufenozide in okra fruits could be negligible to the health of different age groups of Chinese consumers. The soaking process effectively removed tebufenozide residues from okra fruits. The obtained data will help Chinese governments establish a maximum residue limit of tebufenozide in okra and provide data for the risk assessment and removal of tebufenozide in other crops. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry

Synergistic Effect of Hydrogen Atmosphere and Biochar Catalyst on Tar Decomposition and Methane-Rich Syngas Production During Biomass Pyrolysis/Gasification

This study investigates the synergistic effect of hydrogen atmosphere and biochar for tar removal and CH4-rich syngas production during the pyrolysis-catalytic reforming of biomass using a two-stage fixed bed reactor. The selectivity of reforming temperature and biochar on tar removal and the influence of hydrogen concentration and residence time were investigated. Using such synergism pattern not only promote tar decomposition effectively, but also generated the methane-rich syngas, maintaining the biochar catalyst regenerated continuously. The tar conversion efficiency reached to 93.72% with the use of biochar under the hydrogen concentration of 15% at temperature of 850 °C. CH4 showed an especially large yield increase with increasing hydrogen concentration and reforming temperature. The maximum CH4 yield in the syngas of 36.52 vol.% was obtained at a catalytic temperature of 850 °C and with hydrogen concentration of 100%. The tar conversion efficiency and yield of CH4 tended to increase with increasing residence time.

Effect of Seaweed Extract Supplement on Rice Rhizosphere Bacterial Community in Tillering and Heading Stages

Rhizosphere microbiota are conducive to soil nutrient cycling for plant growth. Long-term and excessive application of chemical fertilizer is harmful to agriculture. Seaweed extract is a good organic substitute for rhizosphere ecosystem and plant growth. We supplemented 5‰ seaweed extract powder to chemical fertilizer, and then studied its effect on rhizosphere bacteria of japonica rice (Oryza sativa L. subsp. japonica). In a short-term experiment, we compared the changes in rhizosphere bacteria among four treatments, i.e., no fertilizer (T1), chemical fertilizer only (T2), chemical fertilizer with 5‰ seaweed extract (T3), and less chemical fertilizer with 5‰ seaweed extract (80% of that of T3) (T4). Results show that seaweed extract supplement could affect the bacterial community in tillering and heading stages; the α-diversity of rhizosphere bacteria in the heading stage was obviously improved. In addition, seaweed extract supplement improved significantly the content of nitrate nitrogen (N), available phosphorus (P), and available potassium (K) in rhizosphere soil in the tillering stage, and, finally, increased the rice yield and quality mildly. Therefore, the seaweed extract supplement is shown to be a potential strategy to enrich the diversity of rhizosphere bacteria, which enhanced soil nutrient level, increased rice yield and quality, and also saved the use of chemical fertilizer.

A Perspective on Developing a Plant ‘Holobiont’ for Future Saline Agriculture

Soil salinity adversely affects plant growth and has become a major limiting factor for agricultural development worldwide. There is a continuing demand for sustainable technology innovation in saline agriculture. Among various bio-techniques being used to reduce the salinity hazard, symbiotic microorganisms such as rhizobia and arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi have proved to be efficient. These symbiotic associations each deploy an array of well-tuned mechanisms to provide salinity tolerance for the plant. In this review, we first comprehensively cover major research advances in symbiont-induced salinity tolerance in plants. Second, we describe the common signaling process used by legumes to control symbiosis establishment with rhizobia and AM fungi. Multi-omics technologies have enabled us to identify and characterize more genes involved in symbiosis, and eventually, map out the key signaling pathways. These developments have laid the foundation for technological innovations that use symbiotic microorganisms to improve crop salt tolerance on a larger scale. Thus, with the aim of better utilizing symbiotic microorganisms in saline agriculture, we propose the possibility of developing non-legume ‘holobionts’ by taking advantage of newly developed genome editing technology. This will open a new avenue for capitalizing on symbiotic microorganisms to enhance plant saline tolerance for increased sustainability and yields in saline agriculture.
