A floral organ moving like a caterpillar for pollinating

Abstract A new pollination mechanism is reported of an orchid species, Bulbophyllum penicillium, based on a field observation in Southeast Yunnan of China. This species has a sensitive lip, and there is a distance of 2–3 mm between it and column apex. Once the lip is touched by a landing insect, it will move up and down or swing left and right continuously, just like a moving caterpillar. By suck a lip movement, the pollinator, a very small fruit fly (Drosophila sp.) ca. 1 mm in height, will be pressed toward the column apex where anther and stigma are located, and then cross-pollination takes place. This unique mode of pollination, depending on the movement of lip rather than insect itself, has never been found before in either Orchidaceae or other families of angiosperms.

[Dynamics of urease activity in a long-term fertilized black soil and its affecting factors].

The effect of long-term fertilization on the urease activity in a typical black soil in Northeastern China was examined in this paper. The soil has been fertilized since 1980, and the dynamics of its urease activity was monitored during crop growth season. The results showed that a significant difference in soil urease activity was found at each growth stage between soils treated by different fertilizations. In farmyard manure treated soil, the urease activity was > 160 mg.kg-1.h-1 and with a low seasonal fluctuations. The soil urease activity had a significant positive correlation with soil biological, physical and chemical properties, and the N, P and K contents in plants (P < 0.01), and with soil moisture content and grain crude protein (P < 0.05).

Azimuth estimate of ship with MUSIC algorithm

A method of ship azimuth estimate with MUSIC algorithm is proposed in this paper. First of all, MUSIC algorithm is expatiated. Then, MUSIC algorithm and Bartlett algorithm are applied to deal with underwater experimental data and estimate the direction of arrival which can be used to figure out the azimuth of the ship. As a result, MUSIC algorithm is a more effective method than Bartlett algorithm in estimating the azimuth of ship.

[Effects of 3,5-dimethylpyrazole phosphate (DMPZP) on soil nitrification].

With aerobic incubation test, this paper studied the effects of 3,5-dimethylpyrazole phosphate (DMPZP) on soil nitrification, taking dicyandiamide (DCD) as reference. The results indicated that when the dosage was 1.0% of applied N, DMPZP could significantly inhibit the oxidation of soil ammonium, increase soil NH4+ -N concentration, and decrease soil NO3- -N concentration. The inhibitory effect of DMPZP increased with its increasing dosage. DCD showed a higher efficacy when its dosage was the same with DMPZP, but a lower efficacy when the DMPZP was applied two-fold. However, the efficacy of equimolar DMPZP was significantly higher than that of DCD, because of the smaller molecular weight of DCD. The highest inhibitory effect of DMPZP was observed during the period of 7-14 days after its application, with an inhibition rate higher than 30%. Compared with the control, the apparent inhibition rate was decreased by 29.3% and 41.7% on the 7th day, and by 18.6% and 34.3% on the 14th day when the application rate of DMPZP was 1.0% and 2.0% of applied N, respectively. DMPZP could also slow down the falling rate of soil pH, but no significant difference was observed between the treatments of applying DMPZP and DCD.
