Decentralised Control Strategy for Voltage Unbalanced Mitigation in Stand-Alone Microgrid

The depletion of fossil fuel and rapidly increasing load demands have led to the integration of Distribution Generation (DG) units and further installation of micro-grids. A micro-grid is an entity comprising of DGs, Distributed Storages(DS), and local loads which can sustain in a grid-connected as well as in a standalone mode depending upon the given circumstances. A standalone micro-grid is susceptible to many spiteful events such as Voltage Unbalance, Under-voltage, or Over-voltage conditions due to its low-inertial nature and thus requires sophisticated control strategies to maintain the nominal voltage. This article, proposes a decentralized Positive-Negative Sequence compensation strategy which is applied to a PV fed inverter in order to mitigate Voltage Unbalance thereby adhering to the permissible range specified by IEC-61000-3-13 along with the maintenance of nominal voltage at the Point of Common Coupling(PCC) during Unbalanced loading conditions. Due to the high intermittent nature of Solar, the PV-fed DG is also equipped with an MPPT algorithm to track and extract the maximum power available. Since this strategy is applied directly to the local DG, so no information exchange takes place among the other DGs thus making it a communication-free technique. To validate the efficacy of this strategy a computed model was simulated in a MATLAB/Simulink environment where the simulations portray promising results in the proposed standalone system.

Coordinated Frequency Based Demand Side Management Scheme with Active Power Curtailment of Solar PV in a Battery Hybrid Stand-Alone Microgrid

Maintaining frequency in a stand-alone micro-grid is a more challenging task due to its less inertia. The intermittent nature of renewable energy sources also may lead to unbalance in the network with sudden load changes. With micro-grids operating as subsets of the larger regional electric power grid, they ensure a stable and reliable functioning. To perpetuate its resiliency, an optimal control strategy becomes necessary. This paper presents an efficient, coordinated frequency control solution in a stand-alone hybrid micro-grid to maintain the microgrid frequency adhering to IEEE Std. 1547. A significant portion of this paper comprises two-stage integration of solar photovoltaic with maximum power point tracking (MPPT) having a PV power curtailment algorithm to curtail the excess power during surplus availability of irradiance and a Battery Energy Storage System to deliver uninterrupted power. The efficacy of the control algorithm is demonstrated through the implementation of a 5-bus standalone micro-grid and validated the results considering different case studies on a Matlab/Simulink environment.

Stability Modeling, Analysis and Control of Grid-Following and Grid-Forming Inverters: A Koopman-Based Data Driven Approach

Microgrid (MG) system functionality is limited by low inertia, nonlinearity, dynamical operation regions and system and network dynamics. The proposed unique model-based method analyzes nonlinear dynamic behavior and parameter uncertainty propagation in inverter-based resource studies using Koopman mode-based eigen analysis and extending it to koopman-based predictive control (K-PC). The state-space (SS) model is then expanded by redefining uncertain components as pseudo-state variables. The modified system's dynamics can further be investigated across time using Koopman eigenfunctions, eigenvalues, and modes. Finally, frequency domain and a hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) based time domain analysis on a networked microgrid test system with grid-forming (GFM) and grid following (GFL) inverters confirms the proposed methodology.

Review of Demand Side Management With Thermostatically Controllable Loads

Renewable energy plays a vital role in today's microgrid scenario for the generation of electricity in order to reduce greenhouse gases. The intermittent availability of distributed generating sources (D.G.s) and the gradual increase in loads cause severe reliability issues like voltage and frequency abnormalities in the microgrid during peak hours. The usage of a plug-in electric vehicle, Thermostatically Control Loads (TCLs), also increases in day-to-day life. Hence Demand Side Management (DSM) by manipulating such loads proves to be a convincing solution in this aspect in equalizing the generation with demand. This paper presents the review of various techniques in implementing the DSM along with the scheduling of thermostatic control loads during the peak hours to maintain the voltage and frequency adhere to IEEE 1547.1 without compromising the customer quality of comfort (QoS). An extensive amount of literature survey is also carried out in this paper, along with the identification of research gaps, so that the researcher should implement them in their future work to provide quality research.

Virtual Inertia Based SVPN Sequence Control Scheme for Voltage Unbalance Mitigation in Coordination with DSM on a Stand Alone Microgrid

There is a growing proliferation of renewable sources of energy and single-phase loads, which are unevenly distributed across distribution networks. This imbalanced distribution intensifies unfavorable conditions within the network, leading to detrimental impacts on power quality, stability, and reliability. The objective of this paper is to demonstrate the collaborative functioning of a space vector-based positive and negative (SVPN) sequence controller and demand-side management to maintain voltage unbalance factor in the accepted threshold of 2%, as specified by the IEC standard 61000-3-13 in a typical IEEE 33 bus network. The presented approach for managing thermostatically controlled devices also proves to be highly effective in ensuring the thermal comfort of end users. Also, the absence of rotational masses in converter-interfaced microgrids leads to a reduction in system inertia. Any disturbance in the system leads to significant issues, such as an increase in the rate of change of frequency (RoCoF) and poor frequency response. Therefore, virtual synchronous generator is integrated with the SVPN controller to improve the frequency response of the system. The coordinated control scheme of the islanded microgrid has undergone assessment using the MATLAB/Simulink platform. Small signal modeling technique has been applied to the converters based on VSG control, incorporating positive and negative sequence controllers to address the escalating dynamic challenges in power electronics-based microgrids. This enhanced stability analysis facilitates handling the ever-increasing dynamic issues encountered in such microgrids.
