Current and Future Particulate‐Matter‐Related Mortality Risks in the United States from Aviation Emissions During Landing and Takeoff

Demand for air travel is projected to increase in the upcoming years, with a corresponding influence on emissions, air quality, and public health. The trajectory of health impacts would be influenced by not just emissions growth, but also changes in nonaviation ambient concentrations that influence secondary fine particulate matter (PM(2.5) ) formation, population growth and aging, and potential shifts in PM(2.5) concentration-response functions (CRFs). However, studies to date have not systematically evaluated the individual and joint contributions of these factors to health risk trajectories. In this study, we simulated emissions during landing and takeoff from aircraft at 99 airports across the United States for 2005 and for a 2025 flight activity projection scenario. We applied the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) model with the Speciated Modeled Attainment Test (SMAT) to determine the contributions of these emissions to ambient concentrations, including scenarios with 2025 aircraft emissions and 2005 nonaviation air quality. We combined CMAQ outputs with PM(2.5) mortality CRFs and population projections, and evaluated the influence of changing emissions, nonaviation concentrations, and population factors. Given these scenarios, aviation-related health impacts would increase by a factor of 6.1 from 2005 to 2025, with a factor of 2.1 attributable to emissions, a factor of 1.3 attributable to population factors, and a factor of 2.3 attributable to changing nonaviation concentrations which enhance secondary PM(2.5) formation. Our study emphasizes that the public health burden of aviation emissions would be significantly influenced by the joint effects of flight activity increases, nonaviation concentration changes, and population growth and aging.

Seasonal Incidence of Pea Leaf Miner Chromatomyia horticola Goureau Infesting Garden Pea

The seasonal incidence of pea leaf miner Chromatomyia horticola Goureau, on garden pea (Pisum sativum L.) was assessed during 2017 and 2018 at the research farm of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu, Chatha. The pooled data revealed that the incidence show continuous fluctuation, with first appearance being during the 49th standard meteorological week (SMW)-0.95 miners/leaf which reached its peak (11.00 miners/leaf) during the 4th SMW, then reached to minimum (1.26 miners/leaf) during the 12th SMW. The correlation studies indicated highly significant negative association between incidence and maximum temperature (-0.714**), significant positive one with evening relative humidity (RH) (0.544*); and non-significant ones with minimum temperature (-0.385) and wind speed (-0.74), morning RH (0.258), sunshine (0.013) and rainfall (0.356).

Comparative evaluation of some integrated pest management modules against Leucinodes orbonalis Guen.

Among the three modules, Module I (Recommended practices of SKUAST-J), Module II (Farmer's practices) and module III (Bio-intensive Integrated Pest Management), were evaluated against shoot and fruit borer of brinjal. The overall, the impact of Module III (Bio-intensive Integrated Pest Management) was found superior treatment than Module I and II in suppressing the larval population of brinjal shoot and fruit borer (BSFB) on the shoots and fruits, based on weight and numbers basis, percentage of larval parasitoid Trathala flavo-orbitalis parasitisation as well as cost-benefit ratio.

Functional response of grub and adult ofCoccinella septempunctata(L.) andCoccinella transversalis(Fabr.) on mustard aphid,Lipaphis erysimi(Kalt.)

Studies were conducted in the laboratory of Entomology, Institute of Agricultural Sciences, BHU, Varanasi to determine the effect of different prey (aphid) densities (functional response) of second, third, fourth instars of grub and adult of two important aphidophagous coccinellids, Coccinella septempunctata (L.) and Coccinella transversalis (Fabr.) i.e. 20, 40, 80, 100, 200, 400 and 800, during 2003 and 2004. The present study revealed that the prey density has significant influence on the preying capacity of the grub and adult of both species. Prey consumption by the second, third, fourth instars of grub and adult of Coccinella septempunctata (L.) and Coccinella transversalis (Fabr.) followed an increasing trend from lower prey density (20) to higher prey densities i.e. 40, 80, 100, 200, 400 and 800, while the percentage of prey consumption decreased with increasing prey (aphid) densities. It was also observed that functional response of fourth instar grub was found to be maximum (287.7 ± 2.87) (187.7 ± 2.56) followed by third instars, adult and second instar grub of C. septempunctata and C. transversalis on prey density of 800, respectively. The determination factor (R 2) was found to be significant.

Population dynamics of tomato leaf miner, Liriomyza trifolii Burges on tomato, Solanum lycopersicum L.

An experiment was conducted to study the effect of abiotic factors on the populations of leaf miner, Liriomyza trifolii Burges on Tomato, (Solanum lycopersicum L.) during 2017 and 2018 at research farm of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu, Chatha. The results of the investigation on population dynamics of leaf miner, L. trifolii in relation to abiotic factors of both the years revealed that the pest commenced from 10th standard week, which remained till 26th standard week with its peak activity during 15th standard week. The correlation studies indicated highly significant and positive association between population of leaf miner and maximum temperature (0.120**), while, significant and negative correlation with relative humidity evening (-0.488*) and rainfall (-0.538*). The overall impact of abiotic factors on population build-up of leaf miner was 80.30 per cent.

Impact of Intercropping in Cauliflower on Diamondback Moth, Plutella xylostella (L.)

Impact of intercropping on diamondback moth (DBM), Plutella xylostella (L). larval population was assessed on cauliflower during 2000–2002 at Varanasi, India. Cauliflower was intercropped with two rows of mustard, tomato and coriander after every ten rows and the three different cropping patterns of the above intercrops were tested for their efficacy. Results showed that cauliflower when intercropped with coriander harboured significantly less DBM larvae when compared to tomato and mustard intercrop treatments during both the years of study. Interaction analysis between inter crops and their cropping pattern clearly showed the significant difference in DBM larval population when cauliflower was intercropped with coriander having cropping pattern of Ist row of intercrop planted 15 days prior and 2nd row 15 days after, the main crop transplantation.
