Multipactor discharge on a dielectric surface: Statistical theory and simulation results

This paper presents a novel theory for describing the initial stage of a single-surface multipactor discharge on a dielectric surface in the presence of a dc electric field, which returns secondary emitted electrons to the surface. The calculations employ a statistical method based on an exact analytical solution for the probability density of the arrival times of the secondary electrons. A general integral equation determining the steady-state distribution of the emission phases of the secondary electrons and the threshold of the multipactor growth is formulated. A computer program has been developed to implement this theory for realistic secondary yield curves and arbitrary, nonuniform, distributions for velocities and angles of emitted electrons. Susceptibility diagrams, applicable to a wide range of materials, are obtained in terms of the rf and dc electric fields and are found to be relatively independent of the emission distribution of the electrons.

Simple model of the rf noise generated by multipacting electrons

A simplified analytical model is developed to predict the spectrum of electric current induced by the multipacting electrons between two parallel electrodes exposed to an rf voltage of fixed amplitude. The model is based on the resonant multipactor theory and makes it possible to calculate the relative spectral amplitudes of electric current at different harmonics and sub-harmonics of the applied rf frequency. The theoretical predictions are confirmed by numerical simulations of multipactor inside a rectangular waveguide. Specifically it is seen that the relative height of the spectral peaks decreases with increasing gap height.

Modulational instabilities of partially incoherent light

Based on the Wigner distribution approach, an analysis is made of the longitudinal (in 1D), and transversal (in 2D), modulational instabilities of partially incoherent light in nonlinear Kerr media. It is found that the consequences of the partial incoherence for the modulational instability depend crucially on the form of the incoherence spectrum, even to the point that qualitatively different behavior may be observed for increasing incoherence.

Enhancement of the Multipactor Threshold Inside Nonrectangular Iris

Multipactor breakdown is studied inside the capacitive iris of a rectangular waveguide with a skewed slot along its longitudinal cross section. Both the iris length and height are assumed to be small compared to the electromagnetic wavelength. Therefore, the quasi-static approximation is applied so as to describe the RF field distribution inside the iris gap, whereas a 2-D model is used to analyze the electron motion. The peculiarities of RF field structure are studied using the conformal mapping approach, which shows that the electric field lines can be approximated by circular arcs when the iris length is much larger than its height. The electron motion inside the iris gap is analyzed using different analytical approaches as well as numerical simulations. The simplest analytical consideration is based on the general theory of multipactor between curved surfaces. Within the more sophisticated model, the fringing field effect on electron motion inside the iris is calculated assuming circular structure of electric field lines. It is demonstrated within all approaches that the electron losses within the iris gap increase considerably with the skew angle, deviating from the rectangular iris shape. As a result, the multipactor becomes impossible at a relatively small value of this angle.

Multipactor breakdown in microwave pulses

A theoretical investigation is made of the effect of finite pulse length on the multipactor breakdown condition for microwave signals. The analysis considers the case of multipactor between two parallel metallic plates, using the classical resonance theory. It is found that decreasing pulse length tends to successively eliminate higher order resonance zones and lead to a 'pulse hardening' of lower order modes where the multipactor-prone resonance zones shrink and the lower boundary breakdown field of the zones smoothly increases as the pulse becomes shorter, eventually to completely eliminate the multipactor effect for sufficiently short pulses.

High-temperature microwave processing of materials

This article reviews the physical aspects of a cross-disciplinary science and technology field: the microwave processing of materials. High-temperature microwave processing has a clear industrial perspective in such areas as the production of advanced ceramics, the deposition of thermal barrier coatings, the remediation of hazardous wastes etc. This review starts with the relevant fundamental notions regarding the absorption of electromagnetic waves, heat transfer and the electrodynamics of single- and multimode microwave cavities. Useful formulae, estimates, and interrelations between process variables are presented. This is followed by a review of process examples illustrating the specific features of microwave processing: reduction in energy consumption and process duration, rapid and controllable heating, peculiar temperature distribution, and selectivity of energy deposition. Much attention is given to the advantages of higher-frequency millimetre-wave processing, which include the enhanced absorption in many materials of industrial interest, improved uniformity of electromagnetic energy and temperature, and the possibility of surface treatment. The phenomenon of microwave process rate enhancement is addressed in connection with the problem of the non-thermal microwave effect on mass transport in solids. Both experimental and theoretical approaches to the identification of the mechanism responsible for this effect are illustrated. Finally, the physical and technical factors influencing microwave technology scaleup and transfer to industry are discussed.

Transverse modulational instability of partially incoherent soliton stripes

Based on the Wigner distribution approach, an analysis of the effect of partial incoherence on the transverse instability of soliton structures in nonlinear Kerr media is presented. It is explicitly shown that for a Lorentzian incoherence spectrum the partial incoherence gives rise to a damping which counteracts, and tends to suppress, the transverse instability growth. However, the general picture is more complicated and it is shown that the effect of the partial incoherence depends crucially on the form of the incoherence spectrum. In fact, for spectra with finite rms-width, the partial incoherence may even increase both the growth rate and the range of unstable, transverse wave numbers.
