Improvement in the mechanical and friction performance of poly(ether ether ketone) composites by addition of modificatory short carbon fibers and zinc oxide

The composites of poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK) with zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles and short carbon fibers (SCFs) were produced with twin-screw extruder. ZnO nanoparticles were modified by γ-aminopropyl triethoxyl silane (APTES), and SCFs were wrapped with poly(ether sulfone) (PES). Morphological examination showed that the modified ZnO (m-ZnO) nanoparticles and wrapped SCFs (w-SCFs) were well dispersed in PEEK. The tribological behavior of PEEK composites under dry friction conditions was studied using a universal micro-tribotester. Exhaustive experimental results showed that the tribological behaviors, or the mechanical and thermal properties of the composites after the addition of m-ZnO nanoparticles and w-SCFs, were improved. The tribological properties of PEEK/ZnO/SCFs composites with 5.0 wt% functionalized ZnO and 10.0 wt% w-SCFs are the minimum.

Properties of Random PSF/PES Copolymers as High-Performance Polymers

A series of random polysulfone/polyethersulfone (PSF/PES) copolymers were synthesized by the polycondensation of 4, 4'-isopropylidendiphenol, 4, 4΄-dihyolroxy diphenyl sulfone and 4, 4'-dichlorodiphenyl sulfone in the presence of K2CO3. We obtained a series of copolymers by changing the molar ratio of 4, 4΄-dihyolroxy diphenyl sulfone and 4, 4'-isopropylidendiphenol (it was marked as the ratio of S:A). The copolymers have the similar solubility with polyethersulfone. They also have high glass transition temperatures (Tg: 199°C~229°C) and 5% weight loss temperatures (4, 4'-isopropylidendiphenol: 4, 4΄-dihyolroxy diphenyl sulfone=1:1, Td5=497°C). At the same time the elongation at break is much higher than that of PES, while the tensile strength is a little lower than that of PES.

Preparation and performance of cadmium sulfide/sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) nanocomposite materials

We report a kind of cadmium sulfide (CdS)/sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) composite via in situ for the first time. It is a new type of nanocomposite possessing outstanding fluorescence property and thermostability. The SPEEK has the sulfonic radical side group and the degree of the sulfonation is 0.88. With the SPEEK dissolving in the N, N-dimethylformamide, cadmium acetate dihydrate (cadmium (Cd) source) was added to make the precursor for the reaction and then the thiourea (sulfur (S) source) was injected. We also investigated the effects of reaction time, the ratio of Cd/S, and the ratio of Cd/–SO 3 H. The ultraviolet–visible and photoluminescence spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis were used to characterize the property of the nanocomposite. The high resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM) was used to characterize the morphological of the composite. As the reaction time increases, the photoluminescence intensity declined and the fluorescence peak redshifted. When the reaction time was 1 min, the ratio of Cd/S was 1:2 and the ratio of Cd/–SO 3 H was 1:5, and the fluorescence properties of the nanocomposites were the best.

In the case of the ternary blend system of polycarbonate (PC), polyethersulfone (PES) and a random copolymer of 2,2‐di(4‐hydroxy phenyl) and 4,4′‐dihydroxyldiphenylsulfone, it was found that the interfacial adhesion was enhanced, the size of the dispersed phase was reduced, and PES and PC formed an interlocking structure with the copolymer, which suggest the addition of the compatibilizer may improve the miscibility between PES and PC, and result in the improvement of the mechanical properties of the blends. The compatibility behavior of PES with (PC) was examined using differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA).

The blends of polycarbonate (PC) and Poly (aryl ether ketone) containing 1,4-Naphthalene (NA-PAEK) were prepared by melt mixing in a Brabender-like apparatus. The specimens for measurements were made by compression molding under pressure and then were water-quenched at room temperature. The miscibility behavior of PC with NA-PAEK was examined using differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and density.

Thermal, mechanical, and tribological properties of short carbon fibers/PEEK composites

In this work, the effect of thermal, mechanical, and tribological properties of the blending system of different contents of short carbon fibers (SCFs) on different-viscosity poly-ether-ether-ketone (PEEK) was reported. The composites were manufactured using injection molding technique. Mechanical and tribological properties were measured by the tensile strength, the flexural strength, the coefficient of friction, and the wear rate. The results showed that the wear resistance and mechanical properties of the PEEK with the lower viscosity appeared on a more outstanding level, and experimental results showed that PEEK composites with added 10 wt% SCFs were optimal about the tribological behaviors and mechanical properties of the composites. Furthermore, based on scanning electron microscope inspections, the situation of the friction and worn surface of the material was explained.

Mechanical properties and crystallization behaviors of oriented electrospun nanofibers of zein/poly(ε‐caprolactone) composites

Different ratios of zein/poly(ε‐caprolactone)(PCL) composite nanofibers were prepared by oriented electrospun techology to enhance toughness and ductility of zein. The nonisothermal crystallization kinetics of PCL in the blends was investigated by means of differential scanning calorimetry. The tensile mechanical properties of zein/PCL blending systems were studied via texture analyzer. The fluorescence micrographs, polarized light micrographs, and water contract angle tests were also measured and discussed. The results show that the Avrami equations are applicable to describe the nonisothermal crystallization kinetics of the PCL in the blend systems. The mechanical properties of these nanofibers were significantly improved by the interlocked morphology of co‐continuous phases and partially miscible two‐phase systems. The films of zein/PCL blending systems with a hydrophilic surface do not dissolve in water and have excellent toughness and ductility.
