Changes of Soil Microbiological Properties during Grass Litter Decomposition in Loess Hilly Region, China

Litter, the link between soil and plant, is an important part of nutrient return to soil. Deeply understanding the effect of litter decomposition on soil microbiological properties is important for the sustainable development of grasslands. Three plants (Thymus quinquecostatus Celak., Stipa bungeana Trin. and Artemisia sacrorum ledeb.) leaf litter were selected. A simulation experiment using the nylon bag method was conducted to measure the soil microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen, and soil enzyme activity during litter decomposition. The results showed that the decomposition of three leaf litter enhanced soil microbial carbon and nitrogen. The change rate of soil microbial carbon and nitrogen decreased as Ar.S > St.B > Th.Q. The activities of soil invertase, soil urease, and soil nitrate reductase were significantly improved by the coverage of leaf litter. After 741-day litter decomposition, the change rate of soil invertase was from 16.7% to 33.2%. The change rate of soil urease was highest in the Th.Q treatment; St.B treatment and Ar.S treatment followed, and lowest in the control. The change rates of soil nitrate reductase in the St.B and Ar.S treatment were >1000% higher than those of other treatments. The response of soil enzyme activity to litter decomposition “lagged” behind the change of soil microbial biomass. The significant increase of soil microbial biomass and enzyme activity demonstrated that litter decomposition played an important role in maintaining soil ecological function.

Response of Soil Chemical and Microbial Properties to Vegetation Restoration on the Loess Plateau, China

Revegetation has been reported as one of the most effective measures for reducing soil erosion on the Loess Plateau in China. We evaluated the effect of natural revegetation restoration on soil chemical nutrient, microbial biomass and enzyme activities on the Loess Plateau of China. The vegetation types studied, in order from the shortest to the longest enclosure duration, were abandoned grazed grassland (Ab.G3, 3 years), Hierochloe odorata Beauv. (Hi.O7, 7 years) communities, Thymus mongolicus Ronnm (Th.M15, 15 years), Artemisia sacrorum Ledeb (At.S25, 25 years), Stipa bungeana Trin Ledeb (St.B36, 36 years), and Stipa grandis P. Smirn (St.G56, 56 years). The results showed that soil organic carbon (SOC) and total nitrogen (N) was 9.2-32.2 and 1.2-3.5 g/kg during vegetation restoration, respectively. Except from Th.M15, SOC and total N increased with restoration time. Also, soil microbial biomass carbon (Cmic), phosphorus (Pmic), invertase activities, and alkaline phosphatase activities increased with restoration time. Whereas, soil microbial biomass nitrogen (Nmic) and urease activity was the highest in the early succession period and lowest in the mid succession period (under Th.M15 and At.S25). Revegetation resulted in more abundant and stable soil ecological environment by enhancing soil nutrients and biological properties. Thus, this is a beneficial measure for the recovery of degraded soils on the Loess Plateau of China.

Revegetation as an efficient means of increasing soil aggregate stability on the Loess Plateau (China)

Soil aggregate stability influences several aspects of soil physical behavior, such as water infiltration and soil erosion (Amézketa, 1999). We investigated the soil aggregate stability characteristics in the framework of the 'Grain for Green' vegetation rehabilitation project at the Loess Plateau (China) by using the Le Bissonnais (1996) and the modified Yoder (1936) methods. Both non-grazed grassland and afforestation revegetations were considered. The size distribution mode was always > 2 mm for the fast wetting test (FW) in the non-grazed grassland communities. This fraction accounted for approximately 40% to 80% of the total soil weight. The wet stirring (WS) test showed a distribution similar to that determined by the FW test. For the slow wetting (SW) test, 80% or more of the non-grazed grassland soil fragments was > 2 mm. The mean weighted diameter (MWD) that was determined by the Le Bissonnais' method was different among the tests and land uses. For the FW test, all the plant communities were significantly different from that of the recently abandoned grazing on grassland at the 0–20 and 20–40 cm depths. In the Artemisia sacrorum community, the maximum MWD was approximately 3 mm for the 0–20 cm depth. There were no significant differences among the plant communities after 3 years of afforestation and 7 years of non-grazing of the grassland. The MWDs were lower in the afforestation area than in the non-grazed grassland area. The maximum MWD value from the FW test was approximately 1.8 mm and was significantly lower (< 0.5 mm) for cropland. The MWD of the modified Yoder method was positively related to the slow wetting and wet stirring (WS) tests of the Le Bissonnais' method (n = 20 and r = 0.83 and 0.87, respectively). In the Loess Plateau, revegetations by non-grazed grassland and afforestation are efficient means of increasing aggregate stability and decreasing soil erodibility. The aggregate stability under non-grazed grasslands is higher than that under afforestation. The effect of revegetation is persistent, which makes it a suitable long-term management practice. Compared with the modified Yoder's method, the FW test of the Le Bissonnais' method is better at determining aggregate stability differences among land uses and is recommended for future studies.

Through the field survey and laboratory analysis,soil profiles with various land uses were characterized regarding soil organic carbon variations and storages in the Zhifanggou watershed in the loess hilly region.The results show that the soil organic carbon contents in different soil layers varied moderately,increasing with soil depth,in the study area.Approximately 4.73×104 t soil organic carbon was stored in 0—60 cm soils in the watershed,which was mainly distributed in natural grassland and forest,accounting for 80% of the total amount.Under different types of land use,the soil organic carbon content in the Zhifanggou watershed differed significantly,in a descending order as: natural grasslandshrubforestdammed valleyterrace farmlandslope landabandoned landorchard.
