Codeposition of catechol–polyethyleneimine followed by interfacial polymerization for nanofiltration membranes with enhanced stability

ABSTRACT Thin‐film composite (TFC) nanofiltration (NF) membranes were fabricated via the codeposition of catechol (CCh) and polyethyleneimine (PEI) followed by subsequent interfacial polymerization with trimesoyl chloride (TMC) on the surface of polysulfone ultrafiltration substrates. The detailed structures and surface properties were characterized by X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, ζ potential analysis, and water contact angle measurement. The surface properties, including the roughness, hydrophilicity, surface potential, and NF performances, were facilely tuned through variation of the codeposition time of CCh–PEI for the prepared TFC membranes. The optimized membrane achieved a high rejection (ca. 93%) of MgCl 2 with a flux of around 31 L m −2 h −1 under 0.7 MPa. The results also reveal that the codeposition process endowed the final membranes with much better structural stability in alcohol and improved chlorine resistance compared to commonly interfacial polymerized ones with PEI and TMC. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Nanofiltration Membrane with a Mussel-Inspired Interlayer for Improved Permeation Performance

A mussel-inspired interlayer of polydopamine (PDA)/polyethylenimine (PEI) is codeposited on the ultrafiltration substrate to tune the interfacial polymerization of piperazine and trimesoyl chloride for the preparation of thin-film composite (TFC) nanofiltration membranes (NFMs). This hydrophilic interlayer results in an efficient adsorption of piperazine solution in the substrate pores. The solution height increases with the PDA/PEI codeposition time from 45 to 135 min due to the capillary effect of the substrate pores. The prepared TFC NFMs are characterized with thin and smooth polyamide selective layers by ATR/IR, XPS, FESEM, AFM, zeta potential, and water contact angle measurements. Their water permeation flux measured in a cross-flow process increases to two times as compared with those TFC NFMs without the mussel-inspired interlayer. These TFC NFMs also show a high rejection of 97% to Na2SO4 and an salt rejection order of Na2SO4 ≈ MgSO4 > MgCl2 > NaCl.

Impact of the “Tianjin 8.12 Explosion” on Chlorophyll-a Concentration in the Bohai Sea

In this study, we will discuss the spatial and temporal variation of the chlorophyll-a concentration (Chl-a) in the Bohai Sea. All Chl-a data is derived from Aqua satellite MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) visible ocean color data during the period from 2003 to 2020. The Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) analysis is applied to see the dominant patterns of the Chl-a variation in the study area. The results show that the first three modes can be used to predict the main characteristics of temporal and spatial variation of Chl-a in the Bohai Sea. The higher Chl-a is mainly along the coastal areas, while the much lower Chl-a is in the offshore areas. The river flow into the Bohai Sea and the sea surface temperature have a certain impact on the variation of Chl-a concentration. It has 5.88, 6.06 and 11.76 months period. Based on the temporal amplitude of Chl-a in the Bohai Sea, the vibrations of Chl-a concentration in 2015 is gently. No distinguished changes of Chl-a related to the explosion are observed in this study. However, long term monitor of aquatic system of Bohai Sea especially in the sea area around the explosion location is suggested.

Refined protocol for δ¹³C analysis of calcite and dolomite in carbonate mixture samples

Rationale The carbon isotope composition of carbonates is widely used in petrology and paleoenvironments as a proxy for carbon sources and environmental parameters during mineral formation or late diagenesis. However, most carbonate minerals in nature are complicated mixtures (i.e., coexisting calcite and dolomite). Precise separation of individual signals in mixed carbonate minerals is essential to obtain information regarding these indexes because of the diverse isotopic behavior of different minerals. Methods The conditions for pretreating calcite–dolomite mixtures to determine each of their δ 13 C values were optimized with a series of experiments varying the purging and reaction conditions using an isotope ratio mass spectrometer equipped with an online GasBench II interface. Sequential phosphoric acid reactions of pure calcite and dolomite were performed to measure the characteristics of single minerals under different temperatures and reaction times. Artificial mixtures with varied proportions of calcite and dolomite were used to verify the precision of the proposed method. Results The optimized pretreatment conditions for δ 13 C analysis of calcite in the mixture involved purging the sample bottle using helium and then reacting it with 99% H 3 PO 4 for 100 min in a cold water bath at 2°C. The optimized pretreatment conditions for δ 13 C analysis of dolomite in the mixture involved purging the sample bottle using helium gas after δ 13 C cal measurement and reacting it with H 3 PO 4 on a heating plate for 10 h at 45°C. Conclusions This study introduced a workflow with ultimate precision for the selective δ 13 C measurements of calcite–dolomite mixtures combining a GasBench II with a continuous flow isotope ratio mass spectrometer.

Deep-Time Marine Sedimentary Element Database

Abstract. Geochemical data from ancient marine sediments are crucial for studying palaeoenvironments, palaeoclimates, and elements’ cycles. With increased accessibility to geochemical data, many databases have emerged. However, there remains a need for a more comprehensive database that focuses on deep-time marine sediment records. Here, we introduce the “Deep-Time Marine Sedimentary Element Database” (DM-SED). The DM-SED has been built upon the “Sedimentary Geochemistry and Paleoenvironments Project” (SGP) database with the new compilation of 34,938 data entries from 433 studies, totalling 63,691 entries. The DM-SED contains 2,412,085 discrete marine sedimentary data points, including major and trace elements and some isotopes. It includes 9,271 entries from the Precambrian and 54,420 entries from the Phanerozoic, thus providing significant references for reconstructing deep-time Earth system evolution.
