Compact Balun Filter Using Coupled Resonators

In this paper, we present a compact balun with bandpass responses, which is designed based on a Marchand balun. One half-wavelength and two quarter-wavelength transmission lines in Marchand balun are utilized as resonators in this design. Three ports are coupled to the resonators. The lines are folded to miniaturize the circuit size. By controlling the coupling region, the phase difference of the two output ports is nearly 180°. For demonstration, a balun filter is designed, fabricated and measured. Good agreement between the simulated and measured results validate the proposed idea.

Extension of tube wave detection for quality evaluation of pile foundation

ABSTRACT Based on the theory of tube wave propagation in a fluid‐filled borehole, this paper proposes a new method for detecting the integrity of pile foundation and overcomes some limitations of the existing pile integrity tests. The basic principle of detecting the pile integrity by the tube wave, testing equipment and concrete quality evaluation of piles are introduced. The feasibility of the tube wave detection for geological exploration of a bridge pile in a karst development area is verified by field tests. Through some test cases of prestressed high strength concrete pipe piles, cast‐in‐place piles and rock‐socketed piles with defects, the accuracy of the tube wave detection and other methods is compared. Then, some issues of the application of the tube wave for detecting pile defects are discussed. Finally, the content of this paper is summarized, and some suggestions on further research are put forward.

Dual-Polarized Filtering Antenna for Base Station Application

In this paper, a broadband dual-polarized filtering dipole is proposed for base station application. Filtering response is obtained by adding simple slits on each arm of the traditional dual polarized dipole antenna. Both lower and upper stopband radiation nulls are generated. The operating bandwidth of the proposed antenna is 1.7-2.9 GHz (52%). The out-of-band suppression level is about 10 dB within 0.69-1.5 GHz and 3.3-3.8 GHz. The simulated port isolation is more than 26 dB. The proposed antenna element is suitable for potential base station applications.

Reliability Assessment of Highway Truss Sign Supports

Structural condition assessment can be made with probabilistic based methods. The structural system is analyzed using a reliability model, based on the different possible failure modes. This paper presents a procedure developed to conduct a systems reliability analysis for highway truss sign supports subject to random wind loading and corrosion. The procedure provides a method for updating the resistance strength as the structure deteriorates. The study has demonstrated that the most effective way to improve the system reliability is to increase the restraint of the connection at the top of the truss where it supports the sign and to increase the column stiffnesses.

Monte Carlo based statistical timing analysis using an efficient sampling method

Statistical static timing analysis (SSTA) is one of the most commonly used methods for analyzing timing behavior under process variations (PVs). Monte Carlo (MC) simulation is a straightforward and effective method for SSTA. In this paper, a new sampling method is proposed to improve an MC-based approach by reducing the number of simulation samples. This method utilizes stratification with an importance analysis for the selection of samples of PVs. Extensive simulations are performed to show that the proposed method achieves a better precision on ISCAS 89 benchmarks compared to other MC simulation approaches.

Advances in Application and Property of Polymer Thin Films Prepared by Plasma Polymerization

The basic features of organic thin films prepared by plasma polymerization are reviewed,principal synthesis technologies and new developments in the research on the film are taken into account. Effects of plasma polymerization conditions on the structure and properties of the films are briefly discussed. The application of modern analytical techniques to the characterization of plasma polymer films is also reviewed. The physical properties,including surface properties,permeability,electrical and optical properties,of the film are concisely described with the emphasis on the studies in recent literature. Some proposed applications of these films in mechanical,electrical and optical industries are presented.

Synthesis of Sulfonated Poly(arylene ether)s in a One‐Pot Polymerization Process and Their Nafion‐Blend Membranes for Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell Applications

Abstract A series of sulfonated poly(arylene ether) (SPAE) was designed and successfully synthesized via one‐step polycondensation reaction, then giving flexible, transparent and uniform membranes through solution casting method. The degree of sulfonation (DS) of the yielded polymers, confirmed by 1 H NMR analysis, could be controlled by adjusting the ratio of non‐sulfonated to sulfonated monomers, and physicochemical as well as electrochemical properties of the resulting SPAE membranes were systematically characterized. The ion exchange capacity (IEC) value and water uptake were elevated with the increasing of sulfonation of degree without excessive swelling issue. The membranes exhibited good thermal, oxidative and dimensional stability. Among all the SPAE membranes, proton conductivity of SPAE‐80 (0.232 S cm −1 ) is higher than that of Nafion 212 (0.205 S cm −1 ) at 80 °C under 100% relative humidity (RH). In the H 2 /air single cell test, a higher power density of 93 mW cm −2 was generated for SPAE‐80 membrane doped with 10 wt% Nafion at 50 °C under 30% RH, whereas 89 mW cm −2 for the pristine SPAE‐80 membrane. The fuel cell durability of SPAE membrane was elevated when doped with Nafion.
