Site-specific atomic substitution in a giant magnetocaloric Fe2P -type system

Giant magnetocaloric (GMC) materials constitute a requirement for near room temperature magnetic refrigeration. (Fe,Mn)$_2$(P,Si) is a GMC compound with strong magnetoelastic coupling. The main hindrance towards application of this material is a comparably large temperature hysteresis, which can be reduced by metal site substitution with a nonmagnetic element. However, the (Fe,Mn)$_2$(P,Si) compound has two equally populated metal sites, the tetrahedrally coordinated $3f$ and the pyramidally coordinated $3g$ sites. The magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of such compounds are highly sensitive to the site specific occupancy of the magnetic atoms. Here we have attempted to study separately the effect of $3f$ and $3g$ site substitution with equal amounts of vanadium. Using formation energy calculations, the site preference of vanadium and its influence on the magnetic phase formation are described. A large difference in the isothermal entropy change (as high as 44\%) with substitution in the $3f$ and $3g$ sites is observed. The role of the lattice parameter change with temperature and the strength of the magnetoelastic coupling on the magnetic properties are highlighted.

ELASTIC AND VIBRATIONAL PROPERTIES OF ORDERED AND DISORDEREDCuMnPt₆

In this paper, we have measured the elastic and vibrational properties of CuMnPt 6 with embedded-atom method in three states of chemical order: as a disordered FCC (face-centered cubic) solid solution and as the equilibrium L1 2 and ABC 6 ordered structures. Our results agree quite well with the comparable experimental values. The present calculations indicate that the ABC 6 and L1 2 phases are energetically more stable than FCC phase. Numerical estimates of a set of elastic parameters, including aggregate elastic modulus, Poisson's ratio, and elastic anisotropy are performed, and the results demonstrate that the FCC phase is much softer than other two phases. Further analysis from the point of view of vibrational properties such as phonon density of states and vibrational entropy difference are also presented in this study.

The combined increase in strength and ductility observed in high-entropy alloys broadens the palette of advanced materials. Understanding their behavior on a fundamental level facilitates the optimization of their mechanical characteristics. The atomistic theoretical approach presented herein discusses the Al-driven $B2$-type magnetochemical transition in Fe-Cr-Co-Ni-Al alloys. Diversity in the mechanical behaviors of the partially ordered and disordered phases affords opportunities to design specific properties by controlling the level of ordering in multiphase high-entropy alloys, to promote the engineering of strong, durable, and lightweight machines.

Non-enzymatic voltammetric analysis of epinephrine (EP) was conducted based on three-dimensional rosette vanadium sulfide nanosheet spheres-reduced graphene oxide nanosheets/indium tin oxide (VS ₂ NSSs-RGO/ITO) electrode. The results show that the diameter of VS ₂ NSSs is about

$5~\mu \text{m}$

and the thickness of nanosheet is 200 nm, and the RGO is a transparent sheet structure with some folds. The electrode exhibits an enhanced electrochemical response in EP analyte, which shows a high sensitivity of

$1.39\,\,\mu \text{A}\cdot \mu \text{M}^{-1}$

towards EP (0–

$60~\mu \text{M}$

) and the lowest detection limit obtained is

$0.017~\mu \text{M}$

(S/N = 3). The electrode also exhibits an excellent selectivity, repeatability and stability. The prepared sensor has been successfully applied in real samples and it has a great potential to be used in clinical test.

Density-Functional Theory Study of Point Defect Formation and Diffusion in Α-Alumina and Effects of Applied Strain and Alloy Doping

Oxidation of alumina-forming alloys and breakdown of α-Al 2 O 3 are important processes for alloys used in high-temperature environments. By using density-functional theory simulations, we investigate the formation and diffusion of three common point defects. Influences of diffusion pathway, axial strain and alloy doping on defect energetics during its formation and diffusion are systematically investigated. Results indicate a positive correlation between the diffusion energy barrier and the pathway length. We highlighted that diffusion barrier of vacancy defects can be reduced to that of interstitial defects by applying tensile strain, indicating that the strain state can transform the diffusion mechanism within α-Al 2 O 3 . Moreover, the alloying dopants (Cr, Mo, Cu, Si, Y, Zr) investigated here can be categorized as: inhibitive, promotive, and inert, depending on their roles in determining the diffusion barrier of oxygen vacancy, which is analyzed by the element-dependent substitution energies, atomic radius, electronegativity, volumetric change, and electronic transition.
