Rational Microstructure Design on Metal–Organic Framework Composites for Better Electrochemical Performances: Design Principle, Synthetic Strategy, and Promotion Mechanism

Abstract Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) simultaneously containing metal ions and organic ligands have recently shown great potential for application in energy storage and conversion fields due to their controllable conversion into carbon materials or various metal species, which often exhibit superior electrochemical performance as electrode materials for energy storage and conversion. Nevertheless, the electrochemical energy storage performance of MOF derivatives can still be further enhanced through building composites with other functional materials. It is of great significance in developing new strategies of fabricating MOF composites to achieve electrode materials with improved charge transfer and electrochemical redox reaction kinetics. In this review, the novel design and strategies of MOF composites with various functional components are focused on, including carbon‐based materials (carbon nanotubes, graphene, etc.), metal oxides, 3D conductive substrates, polymeric materials, and the second MOFs and metal salts, especially their derivatives for energy storage and conversion fields. The key factors for controllable synthesis of various MOF composites and electrochemical performance enhancement mechanisms are discussed in detail. It is expected that this review will provide new inspiration for the development of MOF derivatives for energy storage and conversion.

Slow‐Photon‐Effect‐Induced Photoelectrical‐Conversion Efficiency Enhancement for Carbon‐Quantum‐Dot‐Sensitized Inorganic CsPbBr₃ Inverse Opal Perovskite Solar Cells

All-inorganic cesium lead halide perovskite is suggested as a promising candidate for perovskite solar cells due to its prominent thermal stability and comparable light absorption ability. Designing textured perovskite films rather than using planar-architectural perovskites can indeed optimize the optical and photoelectrical conversion performance of perovskite photovoltaics. Herein, for the first time, this study demonstrates a rational strategy for fabricating carbon quantum dot (CQD-) sensitized all-inorganic CsPbBr3 perovskite inverse opal (IO) films via a template-assisted, spin-coating method. CsPbBr3 IO introduces slow-photon effect from tunable photonic band gaps, displaying novel optical response property visible to naked eyes, while CQD inlaid among the IO frameworks not only broadens the light absorption range but also improves the charge transfer process. Applied in the perovskite solar cells, compared with planar CsPbBr3 , slow-photon effect of CsPbBr3 IO greatly enhances the light utilization, while CQD effectively facilitates the electron-hole extraction and injection process, prolongs the carrier lifetime, jointly contributing to a double-boosted power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 8.29% and an increased incident photon-to-electron conversion efficiency of up to 76.9%. The present strategy on CsPbBr3 IO to enhance perovskite PCE can be extended to rationally design other novel optoelectronic devices.

Metal–Organic Framework Derived Narrow Bandgap Cobalt Carbide Sensitized Titanium Dioxide Nanocage for Superior Photo‐Electrochemical Water Oxidation Performance

Abstract Despite recent progress in photo‐electrochemical (PEC) water oxidation systems for TiO 2 ‐based photoanodes, PEC performance improvement is still seriously hampered due to poor carrier transport efficiency and sluggish surface water oxidation kinetics of pristine TiO 2 . Herein, for the first time a brand new metal–organic framework (MOF)‐derived Co 3 C nanosheet with narrow bandgap energy is demonstrated, to effectively sensitize TiO 2 hollow cages as a heterostructure photoanode for PEC water oxidation. It is found that MOF‐derived Co 3 C nanosheet with narrow bandgap characteristic can simultaneously accelerate the surface water oxidation kinetics and extend the light harvesting range of pristine TiO 2 . Meanwhile, a uniquely matched type‐II heterojunction constructed between MOF‐derived Co 3 C and TiO 2 results in an evidently spontaneous e − /h + separation. MOF‐derived Co 3 C/TiO 2 heterostructure photoanodes bring about drastically improved PEC water oxidation performance. Specifically, MOF‐derived Co 3 C‐3/TiO 2 photoanode with an optimized content of Co 3 C achieves the highest photocurrent density and charge separation efficiency of 2.6 mA cm −2 and 92.6% at 1.23 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode, corresponding to 201% and 152% improvement compared with pristine TiO 2 nanocages. The ingeniously prepared MOF‐derived Co 3 C carbide with narrow bandgap energy as a cocatalyst paves new way to construct potentially high performance solar‐energy conversion system.
