Micropore-Dominant Vanadium and Iron Co-Doped MnO₂Hybrid Film Electrodes for High-Performance Supercapacitors

To further improve the electrochemical performance of electrode materials for supercapacitors, we have achieved a significant increase of the micropore volume of a MnO2 hybrid film on IrO2 nano-wedges grown on a pre-treated Ti plate by the co-doping of vanadium and iron (V+Fe). X-ray diffraction and microstructural analyses demonstrate that the V+Fe co-doped MnO2 hybrid films consist of the lamellar structure that is composed of γ-MnO2 nanocrystallites jointed by disordered interface. Nitrogen sorption analysis confirms that the pore characteristics of the MnO2 film change from mesopore-dominant to micropore-dominant after the co-doping, accompanied by increases in the pore volume and specific surface area. The specific capacitance of the V+Fe co-doped MnO2 hybrid film electrode declines from 426 F g−1 to 314 F g−1 with a relatively limited loss of 26% when the galvanostatic (GV) charging-discharging rate is increased from 0.2 to 5 A g−1. In particular, the doped MnO2 film electrode has a loss of only 6% in the specific capacitance after 9000 cycles at a charge-discharge current density of 10 A g−1.

The <i>APOE4</i> Allele Exacerbates Hippocampal Atrophy in Individuals with Alzheimer's Disease, Which May Be Related With IL-7 /IL-7R Pathways

Background: Multiple studies have proven that APOE4 allele aggravates neurodegenerative processes in Alzheimer's disease(AD), but few studies have been designed to determine the specific mechanism from the perspective of inflammation.Methods: Present study included 54 patients with AD(28 APOE4 carriers, 26 non-carriers). Their hippocampal length was measured based on MRI imges. Plasma Aβ1-42 and Aβ1-40 levels were detected using liquid phase flow cytometry. Multiplex liquid chip assay was performed to detect plasma inflammatory cytokines level, including TNF-α, IFN-γ, IL-1β, IL-5, IL-6, IL-7, IL-8, IL-10, IL-13, IL-17, IL-18, IL-33, and MCP-1. Bulk RNAseq and single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) on peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were also performed. Findings: (i) MRI data revealed that APOE4 allele carriers with AD exhibited more severe atrophy in the bilateral hippocampus when compared with non-carriers. (ii) The plasma concentrations of TNF-α, IFN-γ, and IL-33 increased meanwhile IL-7 concentration decreased significantly in APOE4 carriers. (iii) The plasma IL-7 but not TNF-α, IFN-γ, and IL-33 concentration was correlated with the degree of hippocampal atrophy. (iv) Bulk RNA-seq profiling indicated the downregulated expression of IL-7 receptor (IL7R) and CD28 in PBMCs from APOE4 carriers. (v)Based on the scRNA-seq profiles, it was found that the downregulated genes of T cells enriched in the IL7 signaling pathway. The Immunological Phenotype of the Double Negative T Cell in Alzheimer's Disease

Recent preclinical evidence demonstrated double-negative T cells (DNTs) significantly contributed to neuroinflammation in Alzheimer's disease (AD) despite their low proportion in peripheral circulation. Their clinical correlation has not been investigated. In order to explore its potential clinical value, we systematically studied the clinical samples of DNTs. In the present study, the proportion of DNTs in peripheral blood from 68 AD patients and 24 health controls was detected by flow cytometry. Our findings indicated that the DNT proportion in PBMCs of AD patients increased significantly and was closely related to cognitive decline and medial temporal atrophy. Using Luminex liquid chip technology, the following plasma inflammatory cytokines were measured,TNF-α, IFN-γ, CCL11, TSLP, TREM-1, BDNF, IL-1β, IL-6, IL-5, IL-8, IL-13, IL-10, IL-17, IL-18, IL-33, and MCP-1. Correlation analysis results indicated that DNTs was positively correlated with IL-17 and IFN-γ and negatively correlated with IL-6 and TSLP. In addition, scRNA-seq data were analyzed to investigate the immunological phenotype of DNTs. scRNA-seq data also indicated the expansion of DNTs. Enrichment of "hemopoiesis" and "thymus" implied the origin of DNTs. In conclusion, the DNTs in peripheral circulation was closely related to cognitive impairment and inflammation levels, which provides a new perspective on neuroinflammation in AD.

Ferrous-Oxidizing Bacteria: The Potential on Enhancing the Electrochemical Characteristics and Performance of a Neutral All-Iron Flow Battery

Among various redox flow batteries (RFB), the all-iron RFB have greater application potential due to the high accessibility of electrolytes. However, the potential of microaerobic ferrous-oxidizing bacteria (FeOB) to improve the performance of RFB has been neglected. Here, several experiments were conducted using Fe2+-DTPA/Na3[Fe(CN)6] as a redox couple for invesgating the enhanced performance by FeOB in this RFB. Results show that the maximum current density of experimental reactors can achieve 22.56 A/m2 at 0.1 M, while power density can still maintain 3.42 W/m2(16.96 A/m2 and 1.58 W/m2 for control group); meantime, the polarization impedance of anode increased slower and Fe2+-DTPA oxidation peak emerged maximum 494 mV negtive shift. With increased electrolyte concentration (0.1-0.5 M) in chronopotentiometry experiments, the experimental reactor achieves higher discharge specific capacity (1.37 times to control group) at 0.3 M, 10 mA/cm2. Analysis of graphite electrode shows maximum 75% is Brucella, indicated Brucella has ferrous-oxidizing electroactivity.

Etching of CVD Diamond Films Using Different Techniques

Diamond films with a thickness ranging from 5 to 10 μm have been deposited on Si(100) substrates using hot filament CVD from a CH4-H2 mixture. These diamond films have been etched via plasmas generated from H2, O2, Ar and CF4 as well as via diffusion etching using transition metals, such as Co and Mn. It was found that CVD diamond is very resistant towards Ar and CF4 plasmas, while H2, O2 plasma are more aggressive towards diamond through chemical reaction between carbon and atomic hydrogen and oxygen. Columnar structure was formed after O2 plasma etching, while H2 plasma resulted in anisotropic diamond etching. Diamond etching via diffusion reaction with transition metals was not effective.

Alzheimer's disease phenotype based upon the carrier status of the apolipoprotein E ɛ4 allele

Abstract The apolipoprotein E ɛ4 allele ( APOE4 ) is universally acknowledged as the most potent genetic risk factor for Alzheimer's disease (AD). APOE4 promotes the initiation and progression of AD. Although the underlying mechanisms are unclearly understood, differences in lipid‐bound affinity among the three APOE isoforms may constitute the basis. The protein APOE4 isoform has a high affinity with triglycerides and cholesterol. A distinction in lipid metabolism extensively impacts neurons, microglia, and astrocytes. APOE4 carriers exhibit phenotypic differences from non‐carriers in clinical examinations and respond differently to multiple treatments. Therefore, we hypothesized that phenotypic classification of AD patients according to the status of APOE4 carrier will help specify research and promote its use in diagnosing and treating AD. Recent reviews have mainly evaluated the differences between APOE4 allele carriers and non‐carriers from gene to protein structures, clinical features, neuroimaging, pathology, the neural network, and the response to various treatments, and have provided the feasibility of phenotypic group classification based on APOE4 carrier status. This review will facilitate the application of APOE phenomics concept in clinical practice and promote further medical research on AD.

Advancing Nitrogen Removal in Low C/N Ratio Wastewater: Innovative Application of Supercapacitor to Enhance Microbial Electrolysis Cells

This study presents a novel approach, Supercapacitor Microbial Electrolysis Cell (SC-MEC), which used supercapacitor as an external power source to enhance the treatment efficiency of low C/N wastewater. The results demonstrated that under anaerobic conditions and in the absence of organic carbon sources, SC-MEC exhibited favorable ammonia oxidation and TN removal effects. When operated at a voltage of 1.8V with a capacitance capacity of 30F, ammonium oxidation rated up to 56.51mg/L/d and TN removal rated up to 54.64mg/L/d, while 96.69% oxidized ammonia had been transformed into N2. CV analysis showed a remarkable enhancement in the peak current of ammonia oxidation during the reaction. We postulated that this enhancement was related to the formation of extracelluar electron transfer mediators. Microbial community analysis revealed a synchronous nitrification denitrification-anammox process involving multiple genera. In conclusion, the integrated supercapacitors greatly improved electrical activity in SC-MEC and boosted electron transfer and nitrogen removal bacteria.
