Hysteresis-free and submillisecond-response polymer network liquid crystal

We demonstrate a polymer network liquid crystal (PNLC) with negligible hysteresis while keeping submillisecond response time. By doping about 1% dodecyl acrylate (C12A) into the liquid crystal/monomer precursor, both hysteresis and residual birefringence are almost completely eliminated. The operating voltage and scattering properties remain nearly intact, but the tradeoff is enhanced double relaxation. This hysteresis-free PNLC should find applications in spatial light modulators, laser beam control, and optical communications in infrared region.

Deletion of IL-27p28 induces CD8 T cell immunity against colorectal tumorigenesis

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide, characterized by molecular and clinical heterogeneity. Interleukin (IL)-27, a heterodimeric cytokine composed of p28 and EBI3 subunits, has been reported to exert potent antitumor activity in several cancer models. However, the precise role of IL-27 in the pathogenesis of CRC remains unclear. Here, we show that during the azoxymethane (AOM)/dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced CRC development, IL-27p28 levels are dramatically increased in peripheral blood and tumor tissues, and the cytokine is mainly produced by tumor-infiltrating myeloid cells. IL-27p28 deficient mice display tumor resistances in both inflammation-associated CRC model and syngeneic MC38 colon cancer model. Low voltage blue phase liquid crystal for spatial light modulators

We demonstrated a low-voltage polymer-stabilized blue phase liquid crystal (BPLC) for phase-only modulation with a liquid-crystal-on-silicon (LCoS). A new device configuration was developed, which allows the incident laser beam to traverse the BPLC layer four times before exiting the LCoS. As a result, the 2π phase change voltage is reduced to below 24 V in the visible region. The response time remains relatively fast (∼3 ms). The proposed device configuration enables widespread applications of BPLC spatial light modulators.

A simple correlation between MPRT and LC response time, TFT frame rate, and duty ratio is established. At 120‐Hz frame rate, if the LC’s response time is <2ms, then its MPRT would be comparable to OLED. To achieve CRT‐like MPRT, we could increase the frame rate or decrease the duty ratio.

A novel device configuration allowing the incident beam to traverse the blue phase liquid crystal (BPLC) layer four times in an LCoS spatial light modulator is demonstrated. The operation voltage for achieving 2-pi phase change is < 24V. This approach enables BPLC to be implemented in high resolution LCoS for widespread applications.

Ultracompact and high-efficiency liquid-crystal-on-silicon light engines for augmented reality glasses

In lightweight augmented reality (AR) glasses, the light engines must be very compact while keeping a high optical efficiency to enable longtime comfortable wearing and high ambient contrast ratio. "Liquid-crystal-on-silicon (LCoS) or micro-LED, who wins?" is recently a heated debate question. Conventional LCoS system is facing tremendous challenges due to its bulky illumination systems; it often incorporates a bulky polarizing beam splitter (PBS) cube. To minimize the formfactor of an LCoS system, here we demonstrate an ultracompact illumination system consisting of an in-coupling prism, and a light guide plate with multiple parallelepiped extraction prisms. The overall module volume including the illumination optics and an LCoS panel (4.4-μm pixel pitch and 1024x1024 resolution elements), but excluding the projection optics, is merely 0.25 cc (cm3). Yet, our system exhibits an excellent illuminance uniformity and an impressive optical efficiency (36%–41% for a polarized input light). Such an ultracompact and high-efficiency LCoS illumination system is expected to revolutionize the next-generation AR glasses.

Fast-response LCDs for virtual reality applications

We demonstrate a fast-response liquid crystal display (LCD) with an ultra-low-viscosity nematic LC mixture. The measured average motion picture response time is only 6.88 ms, which is comparable to 6.66 ms for an OLED at a 120 Hz frame rate. If we slightly increase the TFT frame rate and/or reduce the backlight duty ratio, image blurs can be further suppressed to unnoticeable level. Potential applications of such an image-blur-free LCD for virtual reality, gaming monitors, and TVs are foreseeable.

Mid-wave infrared beam steering based on high-efficiency liquid crystal diffractive waveplates

We demonstrated two liquid crystal diffractive waveplates: one optimized for near-infrared (1.06 µm), and another for mid-wave infrared (MWIR, 3~5 µm). By employing a low loss liquid crystal mixture UCF-M3, whose absorption loss is below 2% in the 4~5 µm spectral region, the grating achieves over 98% diffraction efficiency in a broad MWIR range. To switch the grating, both active and passive driving methods can be considered. In our experiment, we used a polymer-stabilized twisted nematic cell as the polarization rotator for passive driving. The obtained rise time is 0.2 ms and decay time is 10 ms.
