Self‐Propelled Nanomotors for Thermomechanically Percolating Cell Membranes

Abstract We report a near‐infrared (NIR) light‐powered Janus mesoporous silica nanomotor (JMSNM) with macrophage cell membrane (MPCM) cloaking that can actively seek cancer cells and thermomechanically percolate cell membrane. Upon exposure to NIR light, a heat gradient across the Janus boundary of the JMSNMs is generated by the photothermal effect of the Au half‐shells, resulting in a self‐thermophoretic force that propels the JMSNMs. In biological medium, the MPCM camouflaging can not only prevent dissociative biological blocks from adhering to JMSNMs but also improve the seeking sensitivity of the nanomotors by specifically recognizing cancer cells. The biofriendly propulsion and recognition capability enable JMSNMs to achieve the active seeking and bind to the membrane of cancer cells. Subsequent illumination with NIR then triggers the photothermal effect of MPCM@JMSNMs to thermomechanically perforate the cytomembranes for guest molecular injection. This approach integrates the functions of active seeking, cytomembranes perforating, and thermomechanical therapy in nanomotors, which may pave the way to apply self‐propelled motors in biomedical fields.

Research on Crystallization Behavior of PVF Film during Processing

PVF film prepared by means of extruding casting was cooled in water bath at different temperature,the crystallinity of the film sample was tested by XRD,the desolvation of the PVF film was made at different given temperature and got the curves of the desolvation rate.The results showed the higher the cooling temperature of water bath,the higher the initial crystallinity would be; the lower the initial crystallinity of film,the faster the desolvation rate would be; the crystallinity of film would increase during the desolvation,and the increase of the crystallinity would decrease the desolvation rate simultaneous.

The Monte Carlo simulation of electron transmission through Al₂O₃ nanocapillary

The detailed simulation was conducted to study the 900 eV electron transmission through insulating nanocapillaries and to identify the transmission probability and guiding effect. We get, the uneven negative and positive charge distributed on the inner wall of the capillary made the transmission probability fall off rapidly and slightly effected the guiding effect.

Biodegradable Grubbs-Loaded Artificial Organelles for Endosomal Ring-Closing Metathesis

The application of transition-metal catalysts in living cells presents a promising approach to facilitate reactions that otherwise would not occur in nature. However, the usage of metal complexes is often restricted by their limited biocompatibility, toxicity, and susceptibility to inactivation and loss of activity by the cell's defensive mechanisms. This is especially relevant for ruthenium-mediated reactions, such as ring-closing metathesis. In order to address these issues, we have incorporated the second-generation Hoveyda-Grubbs catalyst (HGII) into polymeric vesicles (polymersomes), which were composed of biodegradable poly(ethylene glycol)-b-poly(caprolactone-g-trimethylene carbonate) [PEG-b-P(CL-g-TMC)] block copolymers. The catalyst was either covalently or non-covalently introduced into the polymersome membrane. These polymersomes were able to act as artificial organelles that promote endosomal ring-closing metathesis for the intracellular generation of a fluorescent dye. This is the first example of the use of a polymersome-based artificial organelle with an active ruthenium catalyst for carbon-carbon bond formation.

Dynamic guiding process of 10-keV O−ions transmitting through Al2O3nanocapillaries

In this Brief Report, we observed the dynamic guiding of 10-keV O${}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ ions (50 pA/mm${}^{2}$) transmitting through Al${}_{2}$O${}_{3}$ nanocapillaries. The transmitted O${}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ ions shift gradually to the direction of the capillary axis, and the angular FWHM also increases significantly. However, the transmission rate of O${}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ ions decreases. The data imply that the charges deposited in capillaries provide a sufficient guiding force to the incident O${}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ ions.

Understanding, mimicking and mitigating radiolytic damage to polymers in liquid phase transmission electron microscopy

Advances in liquid phase transmission electron microscopy (LP-TEM) have enabled the monitoring of polymer dynamics in solution at the nanoscale, but radiolytic damage during LP-TEM imaging challenges its routine use in polymer science. Here, we focus on understanding, mimicking and mitigating radiolytic damage observed in functional polymers in LP-TEM. Using polymer vesicles in aqueous solutions as a model system, we quantitatively show how polymer damage occurs in all conceivable (LP-)TEM environments to which polymers might be exposed. It is found that radiolytic damage to polymers is negligible in vacuum but becomes substantial in water-containing environments. We elucidate the primary characteristics of polymer damage in water vapor and liquid water, addressing the observed differences. Furthermore, we introduce ultraviolet light irradiation in the presence of hydrogen peroxide to replicate the observed polymer damage and morphological changes on lab scale, allowing the use of bulk techniques to probe damage at the polymer chain level. Finally, we compare the protective effects of commonly used hydroxyl radical scavengers and reveal that the effectiveness of graphene's protection is distance dependent. We anticipate that our work will help to guide the design of LP-TEM experiments for polymers in a rational and informed manner.

Cell membrane-covered nanoparticles as biomaterials

Surface engineering of synthetic carriers is an essential and important strategy for drug delivery in vivo. However, exogenous properties make synthetic nanosystems invaders that easily trigger the passive immune clearance mechanism, increasing the retention effect caused by the reticuloendothelial systems and bioadhesion, finally leading to low therapeutic efficacy and toxic effects. Recently, a cell membrane cloaking technique has been reported as a novel interfacing approach from the biological/immunological perspective, and has proved useful for improving the performance of synthetic nanocarriers in vivo. After cell membrane cloaking, nanoparticles not only acquire the physiochemical properties of natural cell membranes but also inherit unique biological functions due to the presence of membrane-anchored proteins, antigens, and immunological moieties. The derived biological properties and functions, such as immunosuppressive capability, long circulation time, and targeted recognition integrated in synthetic nanosystems, have enhanced their potential in biomedicine in the future. Here, we review the cell membrane-covered nanosystems, highlight their novelty, introduce relevant biomedical applications, and describe the future prospects for the use of this novel biomimetic system constructed from a combination of cell membranes and synthetic nanomaterials.

Nanomotors driven by single-atom catalysts

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) involve atomically dispersed metal atoms on solid supports. SACs combine the fast reaction kinetics of homogeneous catalysts with the recyclability of heterogeneous catalysts, providing great technological opportunities. To date, SAC research has focused primarily on the development of synthetic methods and fuel production. Here, we report a combination of SAC and nanomotor design to fabricate motile systems, referred to here as SAC-nanomotors. This concept is demonstrated by an Fe SAC prepared via the pulsing H2-pyrolysis approach. The Fe SAC-nanomotor is powered by decomposing H2O2 with ultrahigh-density Fe atoms, achieving a velocity of 18 ± 3 μm s−1 at a low fuel concentration of 10 mM. This proof-of-principle SAC-nanomotor, with the smallest possible catalytic combustion site and excellent biocompatibility, illustrates the enormous potential of SACs for developing advanced nanomotor systems.
