Influence of noble gases on electron cyclotron heated hydrogen plasma

A quartz‐chamber 2.45‐GHz electron cyclotron resonance ion source (ECRIS) is designed at Peking University for the diagnostic purpose. Experimental results show that the added noble gases in hydrogen could cause a decrease of electron temperature and an increase of electron density. In this work, a numerical model is upgraded for ECR plasma generated by mixed gases. On this basis, the model is applied for the composed hydrogen plasma with additional noble gases. And dependences of neutral gas density and electron density on electron temperature are presented for individual gas (He, Ar, and H 2 ) and gas mixture, respectively. The calculated results are basically in accordance with the diagnostic results of ECRIS.

A novel large-mode-area fiber with negative curvature is proposed. A fundamental mode effective area can be over 5000 µm2 with negligible losses at 1.06 µm. High-order-modes can be effectively suppressed by 100 times higher losses.

The preliminary test of multi-charged ions generation with a 2.45 GHz microwave-driven ion source

A 2.45 GHz microwave-driven ion source for the generation of multicharged ions has been designed and built at Peking University recently. The magnetic field configuration of this ion source is a minimum-B type with a combination of a hexapole field and an axial mirror field. Argon was selected as the first tested beam generated by this ion source. A 63 µA Ar4+ ion beam at 35 kV extraction voltage was obtained in the pulsed mode (50 Hz/500 µs). Without the hexapole magnetic field, the highest charge state was only Ar2+, and no Ar4+ ion beam was detected. The comparison between the two sets of experimental results with different magnetic configurations has proven the rationality of the production of multicharged ions with this ion source. Both experimental results and discussion will be presented in this paper.

[Effect of flat-mirror device on laser-induced plasma radiation characteristics].

To improve the quality of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy, flat-mirror device was proposed. The effects of flat-mirror device on the radiation characteristics of laser-induced plasma were studied. The experimental results showed that when the device consisted of three flat-mirrors placed around the plasma, the spectral line intensity of Mg, Fe, Ba, Ti and Al increases by about 116.2%, 96.43%, 90.93%, 102.1% and 98.57% than that without flat-mirror device, and the signal-to-noise raises by around 39.17%, 32.48%, 38.07%, 39.95% and 21.30%,respectively. By measuring the plasma parameters, the mechanism of the radiation enhancement obtained with the device consisting of three flat-mirrors was explained. This method was an effective way to improve the detection capacity of LIBS.

White‐emitting phosphor Ba₂B₂O₅:Ce³⁺, Tb³⁺, Sm³⁺: Luminescence, energy transfer, and thermal stability

Abstract A series of Ba 2 B 2 O 5 : RE (RE=Ce 3+ /Tb 3+ /Sm 3+ ) phosphors were synthesized using high‐temperature solid‐state reaction. The X‐ray diffraction (XRD), luminescent properties, and decay lifetimes are utilized to characterize the properties of the phosphors. The obtained phosphors can emit blue, green, and orange‐red light when single‐doped Ce 3+ , Tb 3+ , and Sm 3+ . The energy can transfer from Ce 3+ to Tb 3+ and Tb 3+ to Sm 3+ in Ba 2 B 2 O 5 , but not from Ce 3+ to Sm 3+ in Ce 3+ and Sm 3+ codoped in Ba 2 B 2 O 5 . However, the energy can transfer from Ce 3+ to Sm 3+ through the bridge role of Tb 3+ . We obtain white emission based on energy transfer of Ce 3+ →Tb 3+ →Sm 3+ ions. These results reveal that Ce 3+ /Tb 3+ /Sm 3+ can interact with each other in Ba 2 B 2 O 5 , and Ba 2 B 2 O 5 may be a potential candidate host for white‐light‐emitting phosphors.

A miniaturized 2.45 GHz ECR ion source at Peking University

A miniaturized 2.45 GHz permanent magnet electron cyclotron resonance (PMECR) ion source, which has the ability of producing a tens-mA H+ beam, has been built and tested at Peking University (PKU). Its plasma chamber dimension is Φ30 mm × 40 mm and the whole size of the ion source is Φ180 mm × 130 mm. This source has a unique structure with the whole source body embedded into the extraction system. It can be operated in both continuous wave (CW) mode and pulse mode. In the CW mode, more than 20 mA hydrogen ion beam at 40 kV can be obtained with the microwave power of 180 W and about 1 mA hydrogen ion beam is produced with a microwave power of 10 W. In the pulse mode, more than 50 mA hydrogen ion beam with a duty factor of 10% can be extracted when the peak microwave power is 1800 W.

A miniaturized ECR plasma flood gun for wafer charge neutralization

In modern ion implanters, a plasma flood gun (PFG) is used to neutralize wafer charge during the doping process, preventing the breakdown of floating wafers caused by the space charge accumulation. Typically, there are two kinds of PFGs, namely, dc arc discharge with filament and RF discharge. As a PFG, the filament one has limited lifetime and cannot avoid metallic contamination because of the thermal emitting filament. RF discharge PFG has been developed to solve these problems, including prolonging the source lifetime and avoiding metal pollution. Recently, a 2.45 GHz electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) ion source is also regarded as a potential choice for PFG. However, the dimension of the 2.45 GHz ECR source system including the size of the source itself and its meter's length RF subsidiary limits its application within an ion implanter. At Peking University, a miniaturized 2.45 GHz permanent magnet electron cyclotron resonance plasma flood gun with a coaxial RF transmission line has been built and tested. The dimensions of the ECR source body are Φ60 mm × Φ88 mm with a Φ30 mm × Φ40 mm plasma chamber. Its RF transmission line consists of a 200 W microwave generator, a 30 cm coaxial line, a 7 cm coaxial-to-waveguide transducer, and a microwave window that also serves as a vacuum seal. In continuous wave experiments, the electron extraction currents can be as high as 8.8 mA at an input RF power of 22 W with argon gas. The gas flow is less than 1.0 SCCM for this test.
