A Compensating Method for Zero Drift of Indicator Diagram Recorded by Piezoelectric Pressure Transducer.

Piezoelectric pressure transducer have been used to get an indicator diagram in engine experiments. In these experiments errors, which are caused by miss-setting of TDC mark, integrating coefficient of charge amplifier, thermal distortion fo pressure diaphragm of the transducer and zero drift, make it very difficult to analyze indicator diagram exactly. The authors derived an equation of a pressure drop at inlet and exhaust valves of 4 stroke cycle gasoline engines as a function of engine parameters, with the result of thermal analysis of these drops. This equation enables us to estimate the pressure drop and to compensate zero drift of an indicator diagram.

Evolving shock-wave profiles measured in a silicon crystal by picosecond time-resolved x-ray diffraction

Picosecond time-resolved x-ray diffraction is used to probe single-crystal silicon under pulsed-laser irradiation (300 ps pulse at 1.4 J/cm2) at an interval of 60 ps. The observed rocking curves show shock compression of the silicon lattice by the laser irradiation. Uniaxial strain profiles perpendicular to the Si(111) plane are estimated using dynamical x-ray diffraction theory. The temporal and spatial evolution of the profiles indicates a propagating shock wave with the velocity of 9.4 km/s inside the silicon crystal. The observed maximum compression is 1.05%, which corresponds to a pressure of 2.18 GPa.

Laser-induced shock waves can generate very high pressures in condensed phase materials and are very suitable for the equation of state (EOS) studies under high pressures where conventional technologies can not attain.Characteristics of shock compression and conventional experimental shock compression technologies are briefly reviewed for understanding the relatively new technology, laser-induced shock wave compression.Generation and properties of laser induced shock waves are explained with focused interests on equation-of-state.

Measurement of Radical Luminescence Distribution under High Combustion Pressure

The distribution of luminous intensity of radicals, CH and C_2 were measured under atmospheric pressure and high combustion pressure. From the experiment with the premixed laminar burner, it could be confirmed that the radical luminescence distribution and the distribution of radical luminous intensity ratio could be measured. And it was found that the luminous intensity of CH radical was greater than that of C_2 radical and the value of luminous intensity ratio became small as the mixture became rich. From the experiment with the combustion chamber, it was also found that the luminous intensity became strong as the combustion pressure rose and the value of luminous intensity ratio became large as the combustion pressure rose.

Picosecond Pulsed X-Ray Diffraction from a Pulsed Laser Heated Si(111)

Transient lattice expansion of a Si(111) crystal induced by pulsed laser heating is studied by the picosecond pulsed X-ray diffraction. The X-rays used are laser induced X-rays with a pulse duration of 6 ps. The lattice expansion at 3 ns after laser heating is estimated to be about 1×10 -3 Å from the observed shift of Bragg angles, which is in good agreement with the numerical calculations of the temperature distribution and the heat transport analysis.

Experimental Investigation of Pressure Wave Supercharging for SI Engine

The objective of this paper is to find experimentally the suitable working conditions of a pressure wave supercharger (PWS) for SI engine. A belt-driven CVT was installed in order to drive the rotor of PWS to the appropriate speed regardless of engine speed. The maximum BMEP was achieved by changing speed of the PWS rotor at constant engine speed and throttle open ratio. From the experiment, the appropriate rotor speeds which led to maximum BMEP at every engine speed and throttle open ratio were achieved. The results showed that two power peaks existed during the range of the tested rotor speed. Since the drop in BMEP between these two power peaks was relatively small, the rotor speed range between these points was defined as effective rotor speed. At engine speed of 2000–4000rpm, the effective rotor speed was found at the engine-rotor ratio of 2.5. In addition, the maximum compression efficiency of PWS was 75% at engine speed of 3000rpm and the exhaust gas pressure reduced to the same level of commonly used turbochargers at all engine speed. Furthermore, results of the transient experiment showed that PWS had as good response as the small turbocharger, which was optimized for the tested engine.
