Homophily refers to the phenomenon where people who are socially-connected share many characteristics including demographic and behavioral properties. The goal of this paper is to see whether homophily exists in call networks and if so, to what degree we can infer a cellphone user's demographic properties by knowing the demographic information of the people that s/he talks to. We focus on three types of demographic information: a) home location, b) age group, and c) income level. The novelty is two-folds. First, we use both communication metrics and structural properties of call graphs to identify those "important" friends for each user with whom (s)he is most likely to be in homophily. Second, we assess the importance of different time slices such as weekdays, or nights and weekends for capturing different user relationships. We conduct our study on a real data trace with 20M subscribers during one month from a nationwide cellular carrier. Our first contribution is that we quantify the extent of homophily on the call graph and identify the correlations between homophily and communication and structural features. As a second contribution, we develop effective methods to infer demographic information for a cellular user using linear regression to select the most homophily-like friend of her/him. We find that we can predict home location within 20km radius with 80% accuracy, and age group and income level with 78% and 72% accuracy, respectively.
The role of information technology in transforming organizations and improving firm performance has been extensively examined by IS researchers. While IT has been recognized critical in influencing various aspects of service companies, empirical studies on IT impacts in service sectors remain insufficient and fragmented, especially in logistics industry. Drawing upon relational view on the firm and logistic service management literature, this study proposes a conceptual framework of logistic IT competence and its implications in logistic service. In particular, relationship orientation is proposed as a mediator between logistics IT competence and logistic service performance. Discussion and directions for future research will be finally provided.
In this paper, the problems in information flow of the current supply chain and their influence on supply chain are analyzed, including information delay and signal distortion. Then an improved supply chain model is designed, with demonstration of both the information flow process in improved supply chain model and changes of enterprises function in the supply chain. The predictable effects of the improved model are demonstrated in cost, flexibility, response speed, conciseness and integration. Some possible problems and difficulties in the application of this model are predicted.
Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) that have already adopted e-business applications may vary significantly in terms of the scope and extent of incorporating e-business applications into their business processes and benefiting from them. Drawing upon innovation assimilation theory and TOE framework, this study develops a model to examine potential factors influencing e-business assimilation among China's SMEs. Top Management Support (TMS), IT Readiness (ITR), Competition Intensity (CI) are proposed to influence two dimensions of e-business assimilation – breadth and depth. The results indicate that there are different effects of antecedents on e-business assimilation in SMEs of China.
The outbreak of COVID-19 has led to a global surge of Sinophobia partly because of the spread of misinformation, disinformation, and fake news on China. In this paper, we report on the creation of a novel classifier that detects whether Chinese-language social media posts from Twitter are related to fake news about China. The classifier achieves an F1 score of 0.64 and an accuracy rate of 93%. We provide the final model and a new training dataset with 18,425 tweets for researchers to study fake news in the Chinese language during the COVID-19 pandemic. We also introduce a new dataset generated by our classifier that tracks the dynamics of fake news in the Chinese language during the early pandemic.
