Resolving the polarization of high-order harmonic generation by temporal multislit interferometry

We propose a temporal multislit interference model of high-order harmonic generation (HHG). By using the interference picture, we investigate the polarization features of harmonics generated by atoms and the two-dimensional synthesized driving laser fields. The result shows that the selection rules and ellipticity of harmonics can be understood by intracycle interference. Based on quantum path analysis, we show the harmonic polarization can be controlled by modifying the structure of the temporal interferometer. We perform a quantitative analysis of the harmonic polarization spectrum in terms of electron dynamics and provide an intuitive picture and a general tool for HHG investigation.

Momentum gate for tunneling electrons with a circularly polarized control field

We propose and numerically demonstrate a method for selecting the electrons with specific transverse momentum at the exit of tunneling. The strategy is based on the manipulation of the consequent acceleration and recollision by adding a circularly polarized control field (CPCF) to an intense laser field. The CPCF offers a gate which only allows electrons with specific initial momentum to recollide with the parent ion. The scheme is illustrated by the example of tricircular laser fields. To intuitively reveal the mechanism of the gate, the Hamiltionian of the system and the electron dynamics are discussed in a rotating frame, where the CPCF becomes a static electric field and an additional Coriolis term emerges due to the choice of the noninertial frame. This momentum gate offers a powerful tool to study the nature of the tunnel electron wave packet.

Optimization and characterization of dual-chirped optical parametric amplification

We report optimization and characterization of a dual-chirped optical parametric amplification (DC-OPA) scheme (2011 Opt. Express 19 7190). By increasing a pump pulse energy to 100 mJ, a total (signal + idler) output energy exceeding 30 mJ was recorded with higher than 30% conversion efficiency. The feasibility of further increasing the output energy to a higher scale using the DC-OPA scheme was confirmed by a proof-of-principle experiment, in which 30%–40% conversion efficiency was observed. The signal pulse with the center wavelength of 1.4 μm was compressed to 27 fs (FWHM), which was very close to a transform-limited pulse duration of 25 fs. Since the DC-OPA scheme is efficient for generating high-energy infrared (IR) pulses with excellent scaling ability, the design parameters for obtaining hundred-mJ-level and even joule-level IR pulses are discussed and presented in detail.

Sensing Properties of Fiber Bragg Gratings in All Solid Bragg Fibers

A novel fiber Bragg grating (FBG) has been inscribed in all solid Bragg fiber by an infrared femtosecond laser. Temperature, strain and bending characteristics of the induced FBG are investigated experimentally. Cross-sensitivity between strain/temperature and bending can thus be avoided since the resonant wavelengths are insensitive to curvature variation and bend direction. These proposed FBGs are very attractive candidates for multi-parameter sensors in harsh environment.

Tomographic reconstruction of molecular orbitals with twofold mirror antisymmetry: Overcoming the nodal plane problem

We propose a method to overcome the nodal plane problem for the tomographic reconstruction of molecular orbitals with twofold mirror antisymmetry in the length form based on high-order-harmonic generation. It is shown that, by carrying out the reconstruction procedure in the rotating laboratory frame using the component of the dipole moment parallel to the electron recollision direction, the nodal plane problem is avoided and the target orbital is successfully reconstructed. Moreover, it is found that the proposed method can completely avoid the additional artificial lobes found in the results from the traditional method in the velocity form and therefore provides a more reliable reproduction of the target orbital.

Macroscopic effect of plasmon-driven high-order-harmonic generation

We present a numerical method to calculate the macroscopic harmonic spectrum generated from the gas-exposed nanostructure. This method includes the propagation of plasmonic and harmonic fields in the macroscopic medium as well as the response of the single atom exposed to plasmonic field. Based on the simulation, we demonstrate that the macroscopic harmonic yields drop dramatically in the high-energy region. This result well interprets the disagreement in the cutoff between the single-atom prediction and the experimental detection. Moreover, we also show that the harmonic cutoff difference induced by a $\ensuremath{\pi}$ shift in carrier-envelope phase (CEP) of laser pulses depends sensitively on the spatial position. However, when the collective effect of plasmon-driven high-order-harmonic generation is considered, this cutoff difference is eliminated.

Optical Nonlinearity Modulation by Engineering the Electron Motion

Abstract Strong terahertz (THz) or mid-infrared (MIR) laser pulses offer the potential to coherently manipulate the properties of materials on ultrafast timescales, which has emerged as a viable approach to coherently engineer material on demand. However, these approaches have always been limited to picosecond timescale owing to the electronic and structural relaxation bottlenecks. Here, we demonstrate the femtosecond control of optical nonlinearity in a semiconductor ZnO crystal. Our scheme is realized by engineering the electron motion with a near-infrared (NIR) waveform-controlled two-color pulse and a polarization-skewed pulse. The pump-probe methodology of second-harmonic generation (SHG) reveals the connection between the optical nonlinearity modulation and the ultrafast electron dynamics. Our work provides new freedom for rationally designing the structure and transient symmetry of crystals with light and paves the way for petahertz (PHz) high-speed signal processing technologies.

Attosecond interference control of XUV photoionization

The characterizing of attosecond pulses has great importance for the investigation of ultrafast phenomena. Here, we proposed a novel and efficient scheme for measuring attosecond XUV pulses, which is based on laser-dressed XUV photoionization. The ultrashort attosecond gating of photoionization leads to an interference structure in the photoelectron spectrum. Then the duration of the attosecond XUV pulse can be retrieved directly from the photoelectron spectrum with a rather high resolution.
