Performance of Single Cells with Anode Functional Layer for SOFC

To improve the performance of the anode-supported Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) which can be operated at an intermediate temperature, the functional layer (FL) is introduced on a anode substrate. And the scandia-stabilized zirconia (ScSZ) and samaria-doped ceria (SDC) which have higher ionic conductivity and better chemical stability than yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) are used as material for the anode FL with the Ni, The fabrication process of anode-supported single cell with the anode FL was established and the power density of those was evaluated. As a result, the sample with anode FL (Ni-YSZ) has higher power density than normal cell. The single cell which was composed of the FL (Ni-YSZ) and electrolyte (YSZ) showed about of the maximum power density at and at respectively, In case of the single cell using the ScSZ and SDC as anode FL, the performance of samples decreased rapidly and those showed unstable voltage during long-term test. In case of using methane as a fuel, the cell performance with each FL decreased comparing with fuel. In the region of a high current density, there are large concentration polarizations.

Melt processible conducting polyaniline blend: mechanical and electrical properties

The effect of melt mixing process of conducting polymer, polyaniline with polystyrene was investigated. Polyaniline-dodecylbenzensulfonic acid (PANI-DBSA) complex was obtained by a one step emulsion polymerization for conducting blends. Polyaniline/Polystyrene conducting blends were prepared and mechanical properties such as tensile strength, elongation at break, modulus and electrical properties such as surface resistance, electrical conductivity, volume resistance and dielectric loss tangent were measured. It was found that the conductivity of polyaniline masterbatch is 6.99 S/cm and the percolation threshold of polyaniline blend was relatively low about 5 phr of polyaniline. The morphology of blends was setting closer to that of polyaniline and the dielectric loss increased up to 10/sup 5/ at 50% of polyaniline and was more dependent on temperature than frequency at higher polyaniline concentration.

Effect of Urethane Crosslinking by Blocked Isocyanates with Pyrazole-Based Blocking Agents on Rheological and Mechanical Performance of Clearcoats

A novel blocked isocyanate crosslinker was synthesized, and its applicability was investigated for the low-temperature curing of automotive clearcoats. Various pyrazole derivatives were prepared as blocking agents in isocyanate crosslinkers, which strongly affect the deblocking and curing properties of the urethane-bonded coating systems. The thermal curing properties of clearcoat samples containing a pyrazole-based blocked isocyanate crosslinker and polyol resin were characterized under two different temperature conditions (120 and 150 °C). The decrease in the amount of hydroxyl groups in the polyol before and after curing was expressed by the change in OH stretching frequency in the Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra. The real-time rheological storage moduli of the bulk clearcoat mixtures were measured via a rotational rheometer to determine the effect of pyrazole-based blocking agents on the curing dynamics. In addition, a rigid-body pendulum tester (RPT) was employed to investigate the curing behavior in the thin film form. The nano-indentation and the nano-scratch tests were conducted to examine the surface hardness and scratch resistance characteristics of the cured clearcoat films. The results show that a low-temperature curing system of clearcoats can be realized by tuning the curing temperature and reactivity of isocyanate crosslinkers blocked with pyrazole-based substituents.

Environmentally Friendly Methylcellulose-Based Binders for Active and Passive Dust Control

Particulate matter (PM) is an essential indicator to evaluate air pollution, threatening human health. Although PM control could be achieved by using a variety of polymeric materials, identifying effective and green materials remains elusive in dust control technology. Here, we have employed environmentally friendly cellulose modified by methyl side groups, such as methylcellulose (MC)-based polymers, and evaluated their PM reduction efficiency when utilized in active and passive dust control methods, such as dust suppressants and air filters, respectively. When 25 m/s wind was applied on soil treated by MC-based polymers, PM emissions were reduced 95% or 85% lower than the soil treated by only water or the other cellulose without methyl side groups. The MC-based polymer was also effectively suppressed mineral dust from a local copper mine in Arizona with approximately 50 times lower amounts than a synthetic polymer containing methyl side groups. Furthermore, when MC-based polymers have deposited on filters of commercial face masks, the average filtration efficiency improved to greater than 99% while maintaining airflow resistance. Our results present that environmentally friendly MC-based polymers can act as dust binders that effectively agglomerate air pollutants, preventing the PM emission from dust sources and the inhalation after being suspended in the air; thus, labeling them as essential materials for advanced active and passive dust control technology.

Liquid amphiphilic polymer for effective airborne dust suppression

Airborne dust is a byproduct of natural and artificial occurrences, including high winds in arid regions and human activities that affect most of the world's population. Watering is the most general practice for reducing airborne dust by wetting the surface of the dust source to agglomerate dust particles via capillary effect, increasing the aerodynamic diameter of (ultra)fine particles and reducing dust emission. However, the short-term effectiveness due to fast water evaporation, requiring frequent watering, is a major disadvantage. Herein, we utilized biocompatible liquid polymers as additives in water to prolong moist conditions of dust sources due to their liquid state. After the water evaporated, liquid polymers maintained moisture on dust sources, resulting in significantly reduced (ultra)fine particle emissions and extended effectiveness compared to conventional water treatment. Interestingly, we observed greater dust suppressive effectiveness with liquid amphiphilic polymer than liquid hydrophilic polymer because of the synergistic effect of the liquid state and amphiphilic property of the polymer. Translating lab-scale experiments to pilot-scale field-testing confirmed the potential for utilizing biocompatible liquid amphiphilic polymers to advance airborne dust suppression technology.

The measurement of cell constant in a diaphragm-cell method is the most important factor. In order to get the correct cell constant, the diffusion coefficients of potassium chloride were measured, at various concentration and temperature of potassium chloride solution, and at the stirring rate in the cell. The pseudo-binary diffusion coefficients of organic aroma component (benzaldehyde) in sugar solution has been measured at various concentration and temperature with the cell constant obtained above. Experimental results were compared and discussed with the semi-empirical epuations from literatures. And, especially, the diffusion coefficient of benzaldehyde, for a small solute diffusing in a viscous solvent of larger molecules is proportional to the -0.82 power of the viscosity of aqueous sugar solution, at constant temperature, .
