This study aimed at developing a set of question cards for fostering deep understanding and encouraging reasoning about fossils and analyze the characteristics of visitors' communication depending on whether to use the question cards in a fossil gallery. Through several steps, a card set consisted of nine generic questions about fossil exhibitions and guidance for using question cards were developed. Data related to visitors' communications were collected from 18 peer groups (from 5th to 9th grade) visiting the fossil gallery of Gwacheon National Science Museum. Visiting groups' interactions were videotape recorded and transcribed. 'Holding time,' the types of 'actions,' and the types of 'conversation' were analysed. Visitors' actions were divided into three categories: ‘look’, 'speech', and 'motion.' Furthermore, visitors' conversations categorized as 'speech' were subdivided into four patterns: 'enumerative,' 'consensual,' 'responsive,' and 'argumentative.' Using the question cards contributes to increase holding time and most of the visiting actions. Most of the conversation patterns also increased except the responsive pattern. In conclusion, using question cards in a fossil gallery could facilitate concentrated and meaningful visits by enhancing active verbal and non-verbal communications between exhibit and visitor or among visitors, encouraging visitors' reasoning about exhibits, and guiding visitors what and how to focus on exhibits.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the formation and development of science teachers' practical knowledge by life history. In the sociocultural perspective, a science teacher is a producer and consumer of knowledge. There were two secondary science teachers who participated in this study. Each of them had three to six years experience in teaching. They were familiar with the researchers because they had been to the same university or were colleagues with them in graduate school for several years. The two science teachers had formed their practical knowledge for their professional development based on their biographical backgrounds. Model of Life history and structure of personal practical knowledge were used as analytical tools. As a result, the science teachers' practical knowledge has shown a significant difference in the main concern and weight according to their life contexts. The science teachers' formation of their practical knowledge played a role as an important motive to improve their professionalism based on the teacher's life path. In addition to that, the science teachers' practical knowledge showed a tendency to be solidified with continuous reflection.
To compare the efficacy of abatacept and tumor necrosis factor inhibitor (TNFi) in patients with anti-citrullinated protein antibody (ACPA)-positive rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and identify those who benefit most from abatacept over TNFi.
The aim of this study is to acquire a better understanding of how natural history(NH) and natural history museums(NHM) are perceived among students, teachers and parents by administering a questionnaire. A total of over 2500 people participated in this survey. We developed the questionnaire which was categorized by three specific areas: 1) people's overall perceptions of natural history and natural history museums; 2)the way of people's getting such perceptions and knowledge; 3) people's possessing interests in NH and NHM. The summary of survey results included; firstly people had paid attention to nature and natural environments; secondly NH and NHM were not familiar to people, but they expressed their eagerness to learn about them; thirdly the first image occurred to people was dinosaur, when they recalled NH and NHM with describing them to be mysterious and education.; on the fourth, NH and NHM were informed through TV programs; lastly, most people responded that they never learned about NH and NHM in schools but they wanted to learn them.
이 연구의 목적은 경기도 소재의 한 과학관 전시 설명에 반영된 과학의 인식론적 특징을 탐색하는 것이다. 과학의 인식론적 이해는 오랜 시간 다양한 경험을 통해 형성되는 암묵적 차원이 크기 때문에, 학교 밖의 일상 경험을 통해 학생들은 다소 안정된 과학의 이미지를 형성하게 될 가능성이 크다. 따라서 본 연구의 대상은 학교 밖 과학교육 맥락의 하나인 과학관의 전시 설명으로 정하고, Ryder 등(1999)의 인식론적 범주를 사용하여 분석하였다. 연구의 결과는 '근거와 지식주장의 관계', '과학적 탐구의 본질', '과학의 사회적 차원'의 범주로 나누어, 각 범주에 대한 인식론적 특징을 세부적으로 탐색하고 해당 범주의 전시 설명 사례를 제시하였다. 전시 설명 사례는 주로 한 범주의 인식론적 특징을 반영하는 것으로 나타났다. 하나의 근거와 하나의 지식주장을 연결하거나, 개인적 흥미 혹은 과학 학문내적 탐구를 통해 지식을 생성하는 과정을 기술하거나, 과학 공동체 혹은 기관 차원의 과학 활동을 소개하는 등이었다. 본 연구의 결과를 토대로, 과학관 전시물의 여러 매체를 활용하여 다양한 범위의 인식론적 특징을 반영할 것이 제안되었다. This study was to explore epistemological features presented in texts of exhibit panels in the science museum located in Gyeonggi Province. Out-of-school or daily experiences allow more properly and potentially students to form informative science image, because the understandings of scientific epistemology were constructed tacitly through various experiences over a long period of time. The target for this study was panel texts of exhibits in a science museum as an of out-of-school context. The analytical framework was adopted from epistemological frameworks by Ryder et al. (1999). The research results were explored in the categories of relationship between scientific knowledge claims and the data, the nature of lines of scientific enquiry, and social dimension of science. It revealed that one exhibit might reflect the characteristics of one epistemological position: relating one data to one knowledge claim; generating knowledge claim from scientists' individual interests or from discipline's internal epistemology; scientists working as a community or an institution. Findings suggested that the exhibits of a science museum including panel texts and medium need to reflect the wide ranges of scientific epistemology.
Abstract Stochastic formation of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) persisters achieves a high level of antibiotic-tolerance and serves as a source of multidrug-resistant (MDR) mutations. As conventional treatment is not effective against infections by persisters and MDR-Mtb, novel therapeutics are needed. Several approaches were proposed to kill persisters by altering their metabolism, obviating the need to target active processes. Here, we adapted a biofilm culture to model Mtb persister-like bacilli (PLB) and demonstrated that PLB underwent trehalose metabolism remodeling. PLB use trehalose as an internal carbon to biosynthesize central carbon metabolism intermediates instead of cell surface glycolipids, thus maintaining levels of ATP and antioxidants. Similar changes were identified in Mtb following antibiotic-treatment, and MDR-Mtb as mechanisms to circumvent antibiotic effects. This suggests that trehalose metabolism is associated not only with transient drug-tolerance but also permanent drug-resistance, and serves as a source of adjunctive therapeutic options, potentiating antibiotic efficacy by interfering with adaptive strategies.
