Development of a Novel Micro-Gripper Integrating Tri-Axial Force Sensor

A novel micro gripper integrating tri-axial force sensor and two grades displacement amplifier is presented in this paper, which bases on the technology of Piezoresistive detection and use PZT as its micro driving component. The micro tri-axial force sensor is fabricated on a single-crystalline-silicon by the technology of MEMS and consists of a flexible cross-structure realized by deep reactive ion etching (DRIE). The arms of the cross-structure are connected to a silicon frame and to the central part of the cross-structure. After modeling the amplifier structure of micro gripper and the sensor, finite element method (FEM) is used to analyze the displacement of the micro gripper and the deformation of the cross-structure elastic cantilever. A calibration method of tri-axial sensor based on the technology of microscopic vision and the principle of bending deflection cantilever is proposed. The experimental verified that the sensor are high level of intrinsic decoupling of the signals from strain gauge, high resolutions in all three axes, high linearity and repeatability and simple produce of calculation. And also show the micro gripper is reasonable and practical. The sensor is capable of resolving forces up to 10mN with resolution of 2.4μN in x axis and y axis and up to 10mN with resolution of 4.2μN in z axis; the gripping displacement of the micro gripper is from 20μm to 300μm.

Reactive Conductive Ink Capable of In Situ and Rapid Synthesis of Conductive Patterns Suitable for Inkjet Printing

We report a fabrication method of the conductive pattern based on in situ reactive silver precursor inks by inkjet printing. The reactive silver precursor inks were prepared with ethylene glycol and deionized water mixture as the solvent, and silver nitrate as silver source. Sodium borohydride solution as the reducing agent was first coated on photographic paper by screen printing process, and then dried at 50 °C for 4 h. Furthermore, the reactive silver precursor inks were printed on a photographic paper coated with sodium borohydride using inkjet printing to form silver nanoparticles in situ due to redox reaction, and thus a conductive pattern was obtained. The effects of the reactive silver precursor ink concentration and printing layer number and treatment temperature on the electrical properties and microstructures of the printed patterns were investigated systematically. The size range of in situ-formed silver nanoparticles was 50-90 nm. When the reactive silver precursor ink concentration was 0.13 g/mL, the five-layer printed pattern exhibited a sheet resistance of 4.6 Ω/γ after drying at room temperature for 2 h; furthermore, the sheet resistance of the printed pattern decreased to 1.4 Ω/γ after drying at 130 °C for 2 h. In addition, the display function circuit was printed on the photographic paper to realize the display of the numbers 0-99. It provides new research ideas for the development of environmentally friendly and low-cost flexible paper-based circuits.

New Class of Plastic Bulk Metallic Glass

An intrinsic plastic ${\mathrm{Cu}}_{45}{\mathrm{Zr}}_{46}{\mathrm{Al}}_{7}{\mathrm{Ti}}_{2}$ bulk metallic glass (BMG) with high strength and superior compressive plastic strain of up to 32.5% was successfully fabricated by copper mold casting. The superior compressive plastic strain was attributed to a large amount of randomly distributed free volume induced by Ti minor alloying, which results in extensive shear band formation, branching, interaction and self-healing of minor cracks. The mechanism of plasticity presented here suggests that the creation of a large amount of free volume in BMGs by minor alloying or other methods might be a promising new way to enhance the plasticity of BMGs.

Economical and Efficient Protocol for Isolating and Culturing Bone Marrow-derived Dendritic Cells from Mice

The demand for dendritic cells (DCs) is gradually increasing as immunology research advances. However, DCs are rare in all tissues. The traditional method for isolating DCs primarily involves inducing bone marrow (BM) differentiation into DCs by injecting large doses (>10 ng/mL) of granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor/interleukin-4 (GM-CSF/IL-4), making the procedure complex and expensive. In this protocol, using all BM cells cultured in 10 ng/mL GM-CSF/IL-4 medium, after 3-4 half-culture exchanges, up to 2.7 x 107 CD11c+ cells (DCs) per mouse (two femurs) were harvested with a purity of 80%-95%. After 10 days in culture, the expression of CD11c, CD80, and MHC II increased, whereas the number of cells decreased. The number of cells peaked after 7 days of culture. Moreover, this method only took 10 min to harvest all bone marrow cells, and a high number of DCs were obtained after 1 week of culture.

Electrochemical etching of lightweight nanotips for high quality‐factor quartz tuning fork force sensor: atomic force microscopy applications

Commercially available quartz tuning forks (QTFs) can be transformed into self‐sensing and actuating force sensors by micro‐assembling a sharp tip on the apex of a tine. Mass of the tip is critical in determining the quality (Q)‐factor of the sensor, therefore, fabrication of the lightweight nanotips is a precondition for high Q‐factor QTF sensors. The work reports fabrication of very lightweight tungsten nanotips with a two‐step electrochemical etching technique which can be used to develop high Q‐factor QTF force sensor. First, a tungsten wire with protective coating at one end (1–2 mm) is etched with a trapezoidal waveform to form a lengthy (∼2–5 mm) and slender (diameter ∼10–40 μm) micro‐needle. In the second step, sharp tip apex is fabricated with a direct current etching. High Q‐factor (6600–8000) QTF force sensors have been developed with the fabricated nanotips. Atomic force microscope scanning of nano‐grating and a triblock copolymer surface validates the scanning performance of the developed sensors.

Inkjet-Printed Silver Nanowire Ink for Flexible Transparent Conductive Film Applications

The development of flexible transparent conductive electrodes has been considered as a key issue in realizing flexible functional electronics. Inkjet printing provides a new opportunity for the manufacture of FFE due to simple process, cost-effective, environmental friendliness, and digital method to circuit pattern. However, obtaining high concentration of inkjet- printed silver nanowires (AgNWs) conductive ink is a great challenge because the high aspect ratio of AgNWs makes it easy to block the jetting nozzle. This study provides an inkjet printing AgNWs conductive ink with low viscosity and high concentration of AgNWs and good printing applicability, especially without nozzle blockage after printing for more than 4 h. We discussed the effects of the components of the ink on surface tension, viscosity, contact angle as well as droplet spreading behavior. A Flexible Experimental System for Complex Microassembly under Microscale Force and Vision-Based Control

A flexible experimental system developed for efficient and stable complex microassembly is presented. The system consists of a set of modules that can adapt their shape and function to various assembly tasks. Due to the basic limitations of microscopic vision, a wavelet-based focus measure to obtain both high precision and robust autofocusing, a control scheme with a modified Smith predicator to decrease the inherent time delay of vision systems, and microscopic vision/force integration to control the assembly tasks are proposed. A smart 3-D PVDF (Polyvinylidence Fluoride) force sensor is employed to sense the interactive force. Analysis and microassembly of three planetary gears demonstrate that this system has high flexibility.
