Particle swarm optimization of multilayer multi-sized metamaterial absorber for long-wave infrared polarimetric imaging

Infrared polarization imaging holds significant promise for enhancing target recognition in both civil and defense applications. The Division of Focal Plane (DoFP) scheme has emerged as a leading technology in the field of infrared polarization imaging due to its compact design and absence of moving parts. However, traditional DoFP solutions primarily rely on micropolarizer arrays, necessitating precise alignment with the focal plane array and leading to challenges in alignment and the introduction of optical crosstalk. Recent research has sought to augment the performance of infrared detectors and enable polarization and spectral selection by integrating metamaterial absorbers with the pixels of the detector. Nevertheless, the results reported so far exhibit shortcomings, including low polarization absorption rates and inadequate polarization extinction ratios. Furthermore, there is a need for a comprehensive figure of merit to assess the performance of polarization-selective thermal detectors systematically. In this study, we employ the particle swarm optimization algorithm to present a multilayer, multi-sized metamaterial absorber capable of achieving a remarkable polarization-selective absorption rate of up to 87.2% across the 8-14 μm spectral range. Moreover, we attain a polarization extinction ratio of 38.51. To elucidate and predict the resonant wavelengths of the structure, we propose a modified equivalent circuit model. Our analysis employs optical impedance matching to unveil the underlying mechanisms responsible for the high absorption. We also introduce a comprehensive figure of merit to assess the efficacy of infrared polarization detection through the integration of metamaterials with microbolometers. Finally, drawing on the proposed figure of merit, we suggest future directions for improving integrated metamaterial absorber designs, with the potential to advance practical mid-infrared polarization imaging technologies.

A nonchlorinated solvent-processed polymer semiconductor for high-performance ambipolar transistors

Ambipolar polymer semiconductors are potentially serviceable for logic circuits, light-emitting field-effect transistors (LFETs) and polymer solar cells (PSCs). Although several high-performance ambipolar polymers have been developed, their optoelectronic devices are generally processed from toxic chlorinated solvents. To achieve the commercial applications of organic FETs (OFETs), the polymers should be processed from nonchlorinated solvents, instead of chlorinated solvents. However, most conjugated polymers show poor solubility in nonchlorinated solvents. It is of great importance to develop ambipolar polymers that can be processed from nonchlorinated solvents. Here, we develop a nonchlorinated solvent processed polymer named poly[7-fluoro-N, N'-di(4-decyltetradecyl)-7'-azaisoindigo-6',6″-(thieno[3,2-b]thiophene-2,5-diyl)-7‴-fluoro-N″, N‴-di(4-decyltetradecyl)-7″-azaisoindigo-6,6‴-([2,2″-bithiophene]-5,5″-diyl)] (PITTI-BT) by designing a monomer with a large molar mass. The polymer displays good solubility in p-xylene (PX). Well-aligned films of PITTI-BT are achieved by an off-center spin-coating (SC) method. Based on the high-quality films, the OFETs fabricated from PX solution achieve record ambipolar performance with hole and electron mobilities of 3.06 and 2.81 cm2 V-1 s-1, respectively. The combination of nonchlorinated solvents and good alignment process offers an effective and eco-friendly approach to obtain high-performance ambipolar transistors.

An electron acceptor featuring a B–N covalent bond and small singlet–triplet gap for organic solar cells

BNTT2F, an electron acceptor featuring a B-N covalent bond and singlet-triplet gap as low as 0.20 eV via the multiple resonance effect, is developed for organic solar cells. The optimized device based on BNTT2F offered an efficiency of 8.3%, suggesting the great prospect of B-N covalent bond-containing π-conjugated molecules for photovoltaics.

Template-Confined Oriented Perovskite Nanowire Arrays Enable Polarization Detection and Imaging

Polarized light detection can effectively identify the difference between the polarization information on the target and the background, which is of great significance for detection in complex natural environments and/or extreme weather. Generally, polarized light detection inevitably relies on anisotropic structures of photodetector devices, while organic–inorganic hybrid perovskites are ideal for anisotropic patterning due to their simple and efficient preparation by solution method. Compared to patterned thin films, patterned arrays of aligned one-dimensional (1D) perovskite nanowires (PNWAs) have fewer grain boundaries and lower defect densities, making them well suited for high-performance polarization-sensitive photodetectors. Here, we fabricated PNWAs crystallographically aligned with variable line widths and alignment densities employing CD-ROM and DVD-ROM grating pattern template-confined growth (TCG) methods. The photodetectors constructed from MAPbI3 PNWAs achieved responsivity of 35.01 A/W, detectivity of 6.85 × 1013 Jones, and fast response with a rise time of 172 μs and fall time of 114 μs. They were successfully applied to high-performance polarization detection with a polarization ratio of 1.81, potentially applicable in polarized light detection systems.

Indeno[1,2-b]carbazole-Based Hole Conductor Enables a High-Performance Colloidal Quantum Dot NIR Photodetector

Colloidal quantum dot-based photodetectors (PDs) have been undergoing a blooming boost for their prominent photoelectric performance and convenient solution processability. However, the widely used hole transport layer (HTL) 1,2-ethanedithiol (EDT) retains several drawbacks such as a mismatched energy level, existing defects, need for oxidation, and multilayer fabrication. Organic p-type materials, which possess commendable characteristics and synthetic adaptability, have emerged as promising alternatives for the traditional EDT HTL. Herein, we proposed an indeno[1,2-b]carbazole-based organic HTL, named MeOP-DSF. Owing to the optimized band alignment and enhanced interfacial charge dynamics, the carrier generation and collection process are effectively enhanced. The MeOP-DSF-based PDs demonstrate a photoresponsivity of 0.44 A/W, a noise current of 1.1 × 10–9 A Hz–0.5, a specific detectivity of 6.9 × 108 Jones, and a broad linear dynamic range of 104 dB, outperforming the performance of EDT-based devices on all fronts. This work demonstrates the outstanding potential of organic p-type materials and may provide a universal approach for high-performance PDs.

Theoretical Study on Electronic, Optical Properties and Hardness of Technetium Phosphides under High Pressure

In this paper, the structural properties of technetium phosphides Tc3P and TcP4 are investigated by first principles at zero pressure and compared with the experimental values. In addition, the electronic properties of these two crystals in the pressure range of 0–40 GPa are investigated. Further, we discuss the change in the optical properties of technetium phosphides at high pressures. At the end of our study, we focus on the research of the hardness of TcP4 at different pressures by employing a semiempirical method, and the effect of pressure on the hardness is studied. Results show that the hardness of TcP4 increases with the increasing pressure, and the influence mechanism of pressure effect on the hardness of TcP4 is also discussed.
