Size-Dependent Effects of Coded Wire Tags on Mortality and Tag Retention in Redtail CulterCulter mongolicus

Abstract Redtail culter Culter mongolicus , a threatened piscivorous fish species in China's inland waters, has exhibited serious population decline. As part of a stock enhancement research project in shallow lakes of the Yangtze River basin, China, we evaluated the performance of coded wire tags (CWTs) for marking juvenile redtail culter. Through a short‐term indoor experiment, we marked hatchery‐reared juveniles from three size groups (mean ± SE, small: 46.85 ± 0.67 mm, intermediate: 53.76 ± 0.62 mm, large: 63.42 ± 1.05 mm) in the dorsal muscle with CWTs and tested whether marking effects on tag retention and mortality were size‐specific. Tag retention was more than 98% in all the three size groups and appeared to be unaffected by fish size. Tag losses were found only within 3 d of marking. Tagging‐induced mortality of small marked juveniles (58%) was significantly higher than those of intermediate (5%) and large (1%) marked juveniles and was also significantly higher than small unmarked ones (17%). The relationship of marked mortality and total length was quantitatively described by an exponential decay model. Mortality in small marked juveniles occurred mainly within 24 h after marking, which accounted for 71% of the mortality in this marked size. In order to avoid high posttagging mortality and biases in stocking assessment programs, we suggest it is worth the extra fish‐culture costs to use juveniles of at least 57 mm (which displayed 90% survival in our experiment) for stocking assessment programs that utilize CWTs for a handling‐sensitive species like redtail culter. Neutral effects of turbidity across a gradient of vegetation density on the predation of juvenile mandarin fish (Siniperca chuatsi)

Abstract Mandarin fish Siniperca chuatsi is a widespread piscivorous species in lakes of the Yangtze River basin. However, their wild population has drastically declined, and survival and growth rates of stocked populations are low. Anthropogenic activities have reduced submersed vegetation and increased turbidity in lakes containing S. chuatsi , thus, we hypothesize that reduced submersed vegetation and increased turbidity could inhibit the feeding efficiency of juvenile S. chuatsi , subsequently reducing their growth and survival. To test this hypothesis, we experimentally examined the effects of a range of vegetation density and turbidity on predation of S. chuatsi . Laboratory predation trials were performed with a common prey fish Carassius auratus offered simultaneously to S. chuatsi in clear or turbid water under five different levels of vegetation density (0, 20, 40, 80, and 120 stems/m 2 ). The total prey consumption per day (in 24 hr) by S. chuatsi on C. auratus was significantly affected by vegetation density, with the consumption positively linearly related with increased vegetation density. The total prey consumption was unaffected by turbidity. Prey size selection was not significantly influenced by vegetation density or turbidity. These results indicate that turbidity does not appear to negatively affect the predation of S. chuatsi , but a reduction of vegetation can negatively influence feeding induced by decreased predation efficiency, and hence might hinder survival and growth.

Therapeutic Potential of a Scorpion Venom-Derived Antimicrobial Peptide and Its Homologs Against Antibiotic-Resistant Gram-Positive Bacteria

The alarming rise in the prevalence of antibiotic resistance among pathogenic bacteria poses a unique challenge for the development of effective therapeutic agents. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) have attracted a great deal of attention as a possible solution to the increasing problem of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Marcin-18 was identified from the scorpion Mesobuthus martensii at both DNA and protein levels. The genomic sequence revealed that the marcin-18 coding gene contains a phase-I intron with a GT-AG splice junction located in the DNA region encoding the N-terminal part of signal peptide. The peptide marcin-18 was also isolated from scorpion venom. A protein sequence homology search revealed that marcin-18 shares extremely high sequence identity to the AMPs meucin-18 and megicin-18. In vitro, chemically synthetic marcin-18 and its homologs (meucin-18 and megicin-18) showed highly potent inhibitory activity against Gram-positive bacteria, including some clinical antibiotic-resistant strains. Importantly, in a mouse acute peritonitis model, these peptides significantly decreased the bacterial load in ascites and rescued nearly all mice heavily infected with clinical methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus from lethal bacteremia. Peptides exerted antimicrobial activity via a bactericidal mechanism and killed bacteria through membrane disruption. Taken together, marcin-18 and its homologs have potential for development as therapeutic agents for treating antibiotic-resistant, Gram-positive bacterial infections.

Large scale patterns in the diversity of lake fish assemblages in China and the effect of environmental factors

Understanding variations in species diversity and assemblage related with environments at a large spatial scale has been a central aim of community ecology for decades. The current study contributes to building the global perspective on the lake fish diversity and assemblage in China, and identifying the potential determinants, based on the multi-species approach fitted by Multivariate Regression Trees. A total of 425 fish species and subspecies recorded in 135 lakes across the mainland China were modelled with 19 potential environmental factors. Five fish assemblages were then patterned according to the similarity of fish composition and determinants. Diversity partition (alpha diversity and gamma diversity) was employed to compare the differentiation of fish diversity in Chinese lakes in multiple spatial scales. A significant difference between each assemblage was found: alpha diversity was lower in plateau lakes than in plain lakes. However, gamma diversity on plateaus was higher than any other regions. Altitude, minimum temperature of the coldest month, annual temperature range and precipitation during the driest month were the most important determinants affecting fish assemblages and diversity. Consequently, our findings inform the potential implications of fish species conservation and natural resources management.

Validation of a method of estimating age, modelling growth, and describing the age composition of Coilia mystus from the Yangtze Estuary, China

A collection of 577 Coilia mystus was made during April 2006 and 2007 from China’s Yangtze Estuary to estimate the age structure and growth patterns of the population. Examination of sectioned sagittal otoliths revealed a periodic straight/curved growth pattern. The straight zone was from April to November, and the curved zone from October to May, indicating annual periodicity. Annual periodicity was also verified by margin zone analysis. The shift from a curved-zone to the next straight-zone stanza was defined as an annulus. The fish from which the otoliths were taken were 0–5 years old. The von Bertalanffy growth function was fitted to standard length (LS)-at-age data as LS = 215.16 (1 – e−0.53 (t+ 0.30)) (n = 577, r2 = 0.81, p < 0.05). The mature females included five age classes, ages 1 and 2 accounting for 74.3% of the population. The mature males included fish aged 1 and 2, those at age 1 accounting for 86.4% of the population. Mean length was smaller, and annual growth less, for mature males than for females of comparable age. The study demonstrated that the Yangtze population of C. mystus consists of more age classes than previously thought and that the age structure of the population needs to be considered in management decisions.

1997年冬至2000年春, 对我国最大淡水湖鄱阳湖的鱼类与渔业利用状况进行了调查。在1955年至2000年期间, 鄱阳湖累计记录鱼类136种, 隶属于25科78属;其中鲤科鱼类最多, 有71种, 占总种数的52.2%, 其次是鲿科, 12种, 占8.8%, 本次调查期间共记录鱼类101种, 新记录鱼类6种, 即亮银鮈、洞庭小鳔鮈、光唇蛇鮈、短须鱊、方氏鳑鮍和粘皮鲻鰕虎鱼。还分析了该湖鱼类区系组成的变化、主要渔具的渔获物组成特征以及渔产量动态, 提出了未来湖泊渔业可持续发展的建议。;An investigation on fish resources and fishery utilization of Lake Poyang, the latest freshwater lake in China, was carried out from winter 1997 to spring 2000. During the period of 1955-2000, the accumulated number of 136 species, belonging to 25 families and 78 genera, was recorded in Lake Poyang. The largest of families was the Cyprinidae (71 species), contributing 52.2% to the total; the second was the Bagridae (12 species), accounting for 8.8%. During this investigation, 101 species were recorded, and 6 new records were found, which were Squalidus nitens (Gtinther), Microphysogobio tungtingensis(Nichols), Saurogobio gymnocheilus Lo, Yao et Chen, Acheilognaihus barbatulus Gtinther, Rhodeusfangi(Miao), Mugilogobius myxodermus(Herre). Moreover, fish composition in catch from several important fishing gears and the dynamic change in fish yield were analyzed, and some suggestions on the sustainable fisheries development were proposed.
