Three-dimensional printing of viscoelastic inks is demonstrated by E. B. Duoss, C. M. Spadaccini, T. S. Wilson, and co-workers on page 4905. This technique is shown to create porous, elastomeric architectures with highly controlled mechanical properties, exhibiting markedly distinct load responses with directionally dependent behavior, including negative shear stiffness.

3D Printed Nickel–Molybdenum-Based Electrocatalysts for Hydrogen Evolution at Low Overpotentials in a Flow-Through Configuration

Three-dimensional (3D) printed, hierarchically porous nickel molybdenum (NiMo) electrocatalysts were synthesized and evaluated in a flow-through configuration for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in 1.0 M KOH(aq) in a simple electrochemical H-cell. 3D NiMo electrodes possess hierarchically porous structures because of the resol-based aerogel precursor, which generates superporous carbon aerogel as a catalyst support. Relative to a traditional planar electrode configuration, the flow-through configuration allowed efficient removal of the hydrogen bubbles from the catalyst surface, especially at high operating current densities, and significantly decreased the overpotentials required for HER. An analytical model that accounted for the electrokinetics of HER as well as the mass transport with or without the flow-through configuration was developed to quantitatively evaluate voltage losses associated with kinetic overpotentials and ohmic resistance due to bubble formation in the porous electrodes. The chemical composition, electrochemical surface area (ECSA), and roughness factor (RF) were also systematically studied to assess the electrocatalytic performance of the 3D printed, hierarchically porous NiMo electrodes. An ECSA of 25163 cm2 was obtained with the highly porous structures, and an average overpotential of 45 mV at 10 mA cm–2 was achieved over 24 h by using the flow-through configuration. The flow-through configuration evaluated in the simple H-cell achieved high electrochemical accessible surface areas for electrochemical reactions and provided useful information for adaption of the porous electrodes in flow cells.

A Study on the Antibacterial Property of Fabrics with Silver-Plated Fibers

To study the relationship between the content of silver-plated fibers in fabrics and the antibacterial performance of fabrics, five sets of samples with common polyester yarns and silver-plated polyamide yarns were manufactured for the experiment; a qualitative antibacterial test with flask-shaking method was performed and compared for fabrics with different content of silver-plated fibers. The results show that the fabrics with silver-plated fibers have good antibacterial effect, and the bacterial inhibition rate will be improved as the content of silver-plated fibers increasing. When the content of silver-plated fibers is 3.6%, the bacterial inhibition rate for coli form will reach to 76.92%, when the content of silver-plated fibers is higher than 11.99%, the fabrics have better antibacterial property for coli form and the bacterial inhibition rate is higher than 99%.

Rheology and Flow Behavior of Concentrated Colloidal Gels for Direct-Write Assembly of 3D Mesoscale Structures

D mesoscale structures with various patterns have been successfully fabricated by direct-write assembly of concentrated colloidal gels. Geometric fidelity of these structures is very important to functionality as devices and has been closely tied to gels microstructure dynamics, which depends on the rheology and shear history. Here, Al2O3 gels were prepared and employed as model materials. A thixotropic rheological model was developed to show the time dependent behavior of gels structure during shear flow. The model accounts for structure formation and attrition, each with a shear history dependent rate constant. The true wall stress was measured by correcting the end effects and wall slip. The extrusion flow dynamics of the gel was simulated by using CFD method to disclose the structure profiles of extrusion filaments and predict the structure evolution of as-deposited filaments.

Design of 3D Integrated Structure with Vertical Honeycombed-Core

In order to study the influences of fabric specification on vertical depth of honeycomb weaves, 11 kinds of honeycomb weaves fabric were designed in this paper by using different yarn linear density and weave repeat unit. The results show that the vertical depth of honeycomb weaves would increase as the yarn linear density increasing when the linear density was comparatively larger. With the increasing of weave repeat unit, vertical depth of honeycomb weaves is significantly increased. According to these results, 3D integrated vertical structure with honeycombed-core was designed, which used honeycomb weaves as the sandwich structure and plain weaves as the upside face and underside face. At the same time, the looming draft of this structure was drawn.

Hierarchical Composites Patterned via 3D Printed Cellular Fluidics

Abstract Additive manufacturing of freeform structures containing multiple materials with deterministic spatial arrangement and interactions remains a challenge for most 3D printing processes, due to complex fabrication tool requirements and limitations in printability of some material classes. Here, a versatile method is reported to produce architected composites using the concept of cellular fluidics, in which lattices of unit cells are used as templating scaffolds to guide flowable infill materials in a programmed spatial pattern, upon which they are cured in place to produce a deterministically ordered multimaterial solid. The lattice design relies on the unit cell size, type, strut diameter, surface wetting, and distribution of cellular structures to control liquid flow and retention. Individual unit cells are tuned to achieve reliable infilling and combined into higher‐order architectures to achieve multiscale composite materials with disparate mechanical properties, including those considered non‐printable. Lattice design considerations for leveraging capillary phenomena and demonstrate several methods of patterning polymers in 3D‐printed cellular fluidic structures are presented. The concept of tuning the compressive response of an architected composite using a flexible‐elastomer as the lattice and a stiff‐epoxy as the infill material is illustrated.

Influence of Sm³⁺ doping on microstructure and electrical properties of ((Nd_0.7Yb_0.3)_1-xSm_x)₂Zr₂O₇

( Nd 0.7 Yb 0.3 ) 2 Zr 2 O 7 and (( Nd 0.7 Yb 0.3 ) 1-x Sm x ) 2 Zr 2 O 7 (0 < x ≤ 0.25) ceramics have been synthesized by pressureless sintering by tailoring the chemical compositions. Microstructure and electrical conductivity of (( Nd 0.7 Yb 0.3 ) 1-x Sm x ) 2 Zr 2 O 7 were investigated by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and AC impedance spectroscopy. ( Nd 0.7 Yb 0.3 ) 2 Zr 2 O 7 ceramic exhibits a mixed crystal structure of defect fluorite and pyrochlore. After doping with Sm 3+ cations, the structure changes from a mixed type of ( Nd 0.7 Yb 0.3 ) 2 Zr 2 O 7 to a single pyrochlore type of (( Nd 0.7 Yb 0.3 ) 1-x Sm x ) 2 Zr 2 O 7 , as the addition of Sm 3+ reduces the difference in ionic radius between Nd 3+ and Yb 3+ . However, (( Nd 0.7 Yb 0.3 ) 1-x Sm x ) 2 Zr 2 O 7 ceramics contain the localized short-range disorder despite the structural order overall in the pyrochlore. The measured total conductivities of (( Nd 0.7 Yb 0.3 ) 1-x Sm x ) 2 Zr 2 O 7 obey the Arrhenius relation. Doping of Sm 3+ enhances the electrical conductivity of ( Nd 0.7 Yb 0.3 ) 2 Zr 2 O 7 ceramic significantly, which is closely related to the variations in the concentration of oxygen vacancies at 48f sites, relatively low activation energy and high pre-exponential factor caused by the long-range order and short-range disorder.

3D-Printing of Meso-structurally Ordered Carbon Fiber/Polymer Composites with Unprecedented Orthotropic Physical Properties

Abstract Here we report the first example of a class of additively manufactured carbon fiber reinforced composite (AMCFRC) materials which have been achieved through the use of a latent thermal cured aromatic thermoset resin system, through an adaptation of direct ink writing (DIW) 3D-printing technology. We have developed a means of printing high performance thermoset carbon fiber composites, which allow the fiber component of a resin and carbon fiber fluid to be aligned in three dimensions via controlled micro-extrusion and subsequently cured into complex geometries. Characterization of our composite systems clearly show that we achieved a high order of fiber alignment within the composite microstructure, which in turn allows these materials to outperform equivalently filled randomly oriented carbon fiber and polymer composites. Furthermore, our AM carbon fiber composite systems exhibit highly orthotropic mechanical and electrical responses as a direct result of the alignment of carbon fiber bundles in the microscale which we predict will ultimately lead to the design of truly tailorable carbon fiber/polymer hybrid materials having locally programmable complex electrical, thermal and mechanical response.
