Ultrathin Li–Si–O Coating Layer to Stabilize the Surface Structure and Prolong the Cycling Life of Single-Crystal LiNi_0.6Co_0.2Mn_0.2O₂ Cathode Materials at 4.5 V

Single-crystal LiNi1–x–yCoxMnyO2 cathode materials can effectively suppress intergranular cracks that usually is seen in commercial polycrystal LiNi1–x–yCoxMnyO2 cathode materials. However, the surface structure degradation for single-crystal LiNi1–x–yCoxMnyO2 cathode materials is still aggravated at a higher cutoff voltage (over 4.5 V). In this work, we prepare single-crystal LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 cathode materials via a solid-state method and then coat an ultrathin Li–Si–O layer on their surface by a wet coating method. The results show that the single-crystal LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 cathode materials with a Li–Si–O coating layer deliver excellent cycling performance even at a higher cutoff voltage of 4.5 V. The optimized Li–Si–O-modified sample displays a capacity retention of 90.6% after 100 cycles, whereas only 68.0% for unmodified single-crystal LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2. Further analysis of the cycled electrodes reveals that the surface structure degradation is the main reason for the decrease of electrochemical performance of single-crystal LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 at a high voltage (4.5 V). In contrast, with Li–Si–O coating, this phenomenon can be suppressed effectively to maintain interfacial stability and prolong the cycling life.

Hierarchically porous honeycomb-like carbon as a lithium–oxygen electrode

In this work, hierarchically porous honeycomb-like carbon (HCC) was prepared and used in the fabrication of the air electrode for lithium–oxygen batteries. The HCC-based electrode was found to yield an obviously higher specific capacity of 3233 mA h g−1 without the addition of catalysts and an improved cycle efficiency with a higher discharge voltage plateau (2.75 V vs. 2.50 V) than conventional carbon. The enhanced performance is largely ascribed to its unique porous structure, which consists of large tunnels for oxygen diffusion into the inner electrode and nanosized pores, which serve as reactive sites for oxygen reduction reactions and provide more room for accumulation of deposits. Furthermore, HCC samples with different pore sizes of 400 and 100 nm were investigated in lithium–oxygen batteries. There is a significant relationship between the discharge performance and the diameter.

Three-Dimensional Porous Si and SiO₂ with In Situ Decorated Carbon Nanotubes As Anode Materials for Li-ion Batteries

A high-capacity Si anode is always accompanied by very large volume expansion and structural collapse during the lithium-ion insertion/extraction process. To stabilize the structure of the Si anode, magnesium vapor thermal reduction has been used to synthesize porous Si and SiO2 (pSS) particles, followed by in situ growth of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in pSS pores through a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process. Field-emission scanning electron microscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy have shown that the final product (pSS/CNTs) possesses adequate void space intertwined by uniformly distributed CNTs and inactive silica in particle form. pSS/CNTs with such an elaborate structural design deliver improved electrochemical performance, with better coulombic efficiency (70% at the first cycle), cycling capability (1200 mAh g-1 at 0.5 A g-1 after 200 cycles), and rate capability (1984, 1654, 1385, 1072, and 800 mAh g-1 at current densities of 0.1, 0.2, 0.5, 1, and 2 A g-1, respectively), compared to pSS and porous Si/CNTs. These merits of pSS/CNTs are attributed to the capability of void space to absorb the volume changes and that of the silica to confine the excessive lithiation expansion of the Si anode. In addition, CNTs have interwound the particles, leading to significant enhancement of electronic conductivity before and after Si-anode pulverization. This simple and scalable strategy makes it easy to expand the application to manufacturing other alloy anode materials.

In Situ Formed Continuous and Dense Inorganic Borate‐Based SEI for High‐Performance Li‐Metal Batteries

Abstract The practical application of lithium metal batteries (LMBs) is largely hindered by the notorious lithium dendrite growth, low cycle efficiency associated with insufficient electrode–electrolyte interphase dynamics, and electrolyte combustion. Here, an advanced electrolyte using a combination of three kinds of salts dissolved in carbonate‐based solvents is developed. The salt anions dominate a primary solvation sheath, resulting in weak interaction between Li + and the solvents, as well as the in situ formation of an inorganic‐rich bilayer solid electrolyte interface (SEI). The designed electrolyte enables high cycle stability in LMBs with a high‐loading NMC cathode (approximately 20 mg cm −2 ), exhibiting 89.89% capacity retention after 200 cycles with the cutoff voltage of 4.5 V. Cryo‐TEM characterization and density‐functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the borate‐based bilayer SEI, characterized by an exceptional dense structure, effectively suppresses lithium dendrite growth, and certify the crucial role of inorganic component continuity and density within the SEI, which surpasses the absorption and migration energy barrier in terms of significance. This profound understanding of SEI structure holds great potential for advancing the development of high‐stable LMBs and can be expanded to other battery system.

Electrochemical Property Enhancement of LiNi_0.5Mn_1.5O₄ Cathodes at High Temperatures Using 1,1,3,3-Tetramethyldisiloxane

In this work, we propose that 1,1,3,3-tetramethyldisiloxane (TMDS) is beneficial for electrochemical property enhancement of LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4/Li cells at high temperatures. The LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4/Li cells with 1 vol % TMDS revealed capacity retention of 81.2% after a cycling test at 55 °C, while the cells without additive showed capacity retention of only 32.3%. The cells with 1 vol % TMDS also presented a better rate performance, reaching 100 mAh g-1 under 3C. Physical characterization and theoretical calculations revealed that TMDS formed a thinner and better conductive layer on the LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 surface and effectively scavenged HF/F- from the electrolyte, contributing to high stabilization of LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4.
