Soybean Root-Derived Hierarchical Porous Carbon as Electrode Material for High-Performance Supercapacitors in Ionic Liquids

Soybeans are extensively cultivated worldwide as human food. However, large quantities of soybean roots (SRs), which possess an abundant three-dimensional (3D) structure, remain unused and produce enormous pressure on the environment. Here, 3D hierarchical porous carbon was prepared by the facile carbonization of SRs followed by chemical activation. The as-prepared material, possessing large specific surface area (2143 m2 g–1), good electrical conductivity, and unique 3D hierarchical porosity, shows outstanding electrochemical performance as an electrode material for supercapacitors, such as a high capacitance (276 F g–1 at 0.5 A g–1), superior cycle stability (98% capacitance retention after 10,000 cycles at 5 A g–1), and good rate capability in a symmetric two-electrode supercapacitor in 6 M KOH. Furthermore, the maximum energy density of as-assembled symmetric supercapacitor can reach 100.5 Wh kg–1 in neat EMIM BF4. Moreover, a value of 40.7 Wh kg–1 is maintained at ultrahigh power density (63000 W kg–1). These results show that the as-assembled supercapacitor can simultaneously deliver superior energy and power density.

Effect of heat treatment on the surface color of rubber wood (Hevea brasiliensis)

In this study the effect heat treatment process parameters (temperature, duration and heating rate) on the surface color of rubber wood was evaluated.The color of the rubber wood was determined using CIE L*a*b* system before and after the heat treatment.The colorimetric properties, including total color difference (∆E*), lightness index (L*), red-green index (a*), and yellow-blue index (b*), were investigated at different treatment conditions.The results of analysis of variance (ANOVA) indicate that the heat treatment temperature has a significant effect on the colorimetric properties of the heat-treated rubber wood, duration and heating rate has no effect.Within the experimental range, as the heat treatment temperature and duration increasing, the color of the rubber wood gradually deepens.In order to achieve a surface color like the teak wood, the optimum process conditions are heat treatment temperature 190°C, duration 4 h, heating rate 10°C .h -1 .

P-type ZnO:N Films Prepared by Thermal Oxidation of Zn ₃ N ₂

We prepare p-type ZnO:N films by annealing Zn3N2 films in oxygen over a range of temperatures. The prepared films are characterized by various techniques, such as Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, x-ray photoemission spectroscopy, the Hall effect and photoluminescence spectra. The results show that the Zn3N2 films start to transform to ZnO at 300°C and the N content decreases with an increase in annealing temperature. N has two local chemical states: zinc oxynitride (ZnO1−xNx) and substitutional NO in O-rich local environments (α -NO). The conduction type changes from n-type to p-type upon oxidation at 400–600°C, indicating that N is an effective acceptor in the ZnO film. The photoluminescence spectra show the UV emission and defect-related emissions of ZnO:N films. The mechanism and efficiency of p-type doping are briefly discussed.

Anti-scaling performances of different aged landfill leachates on PPR and ABS pipe materials

Landfill leachate, because of its complex components, may cause pipe clogging during its collection and transportation, and pose a threat to the environment. This study considers two typical drainage pipe materials, i.e., polypropylene-random (PPR) and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS), to discriminate their anti-scaling performances through a landfill leachate immersion experiment. The results show that both PPR and ABS pipe materials immersed in the younger-aged leachate are prone to scaling. The mass concentrations of Ca2+ in the leachate play a key role in scale formation, followed by Mg2+, pH, oxidation-reduction potential (ORP), dissolved oxygen (DO), and Cl-. In particular, Ca2+, pH, and DO show a positive relationship in scaling, while Mg2+ acts in a negative relationship. Calcium carbonate is the major constituent of the scales, accounting for 72.3% of the total. The scaling on the surface of the PPR pipe material is more serious than that of the ABS pipe material, revealed by the corresponding weight increment that is 33% higher than that related to ABS during the experimental period. It is thus indicated that ABS has better anti-scaling performance, which may be an optional material selected for the system design of leachate collection and transportation.

Use of Lysozyme and Oligomeric Proanthocyanidin to Reduce Sulfur Dioxide and the Evolution of Volatile Compounds in Italian Riesling Ice Wine During Aging Process

In order to reduce sulfur dioxide (SO2) level in ice wine making, the effects of low SO2, lysozyme and oligomeric proanthocyanidin (OPC) on the volatile compounds were, respectively, studied during 1 year aging process. Based on the previous study, seven treatments of Italian Riesling ice wine were carried out for monitoring the evolution of volatile compounds. Results of gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS) showed that, about 180 mg/L SO2 not only increased total alcohols content in Italian Riesling ice wine, but also significantly correlated with certain higher alcohols during 1 year aging process. Meanwhile, the final concentration of medium-chain fatty acid ethyl esters and the corresponding fatty acids were found highly related to lysozyme adding. Moreover, OPC played a positive role in stabilizing the total content of esters at a level around 200 mg/L, it mainly due to its excellent ability of free oxygen scavenging. Finally, principal components analysis (PCA) was conducted to reclassify major volatile compounds and 14 typical volatile components were defined. Practical Application This article was technically supported by our previous research: Development of lysozyme-combined antibacterial system to reduce sulfur dioxide and to stabilize Italian Riesling ice wine during aging process and mainly studied three volatile compounds evolution (alcohols, acids and esters) in Italian Riesling ice wine during 1 year aging process. It not only illustrated SO2 can not be totally replaced after alcohol fermentation because of its extraordinary contribution on alcohols and esters composition, but also indicated an appropriate range of SO2 addition (180–200 mg/L) contributes to the synthesis of fruity and floral bouquet for aging. On the other hand, the addition of lysozyme and OPC not only improved the activity of LAB inhibition and antioxidant for ice wine aging, but also promoted certain esters evolution, which contributed more complexities for ice wine bouquet. It further proved the utilization of our system can be very promising and beneficial for reducing SO2 concentration and stabilizing Italian Riesling ice wine during aging process.
