SwimTrain

We explore design opportunities for using interactive technologies to enrich group fitness exercises, such as group spinning and swimming, in which an instructor guides a workout program and members synchronously perform a shared physical activity. As a case study, we investigate group fitness swimming. The design challenge is to coordinate a large group of people by considering trade-offs between social awareness and information overload. Our resulting group fitness swimming game, SwimTrain, allows a group of people to have localized synchronous interactions over a virtual space. The game uses competitive and cooperative phases to help group members acquire group-wide awareness. The results of our user study showed that SwimTrain provides socially-enriched swimming experiences, motivates swimmers to follow a training regimen and exert more intensely, and allows strategic game play dealing with skill differences among swimmers. Consequently, we propose several practical considerations for designing group fitness exergames.

A Risk Extended Version of Merton’s Optimal Consumption and Portfolio Selection

A risk management version of the classical investment-consumption problem known as Merton's problem in the finance literature is proposed. Risk is measured by variance, which introduces a nonlinear function of the expected value into the control problem. Standard stochastic theory cannot properly handle this type of nonlinear stochastic optimization problem. Therefore, we study this time-inconsistent problem within the mean field-type control framework. We derive the sufficient condition of optimality and solve the problem completely. Numerical results illustrating the effect of risk on optimal policies are also presented. Applications can be numerous, including all kinds of investment decisions or operations decisions.

Social influence of hubs in information cascade processes

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore how hubs’ social influence on social network decisions can cause the behavior of information cascades in a market. Design/methodology/approach The authors establish understanding of the fundamental mechanism of information cascades through a computational simulation approach. Findings Eigenvector centrality, betweenness centrality, and PageRank are statistically correlated with the occurrence of information cascades among agents; the hubs’ incorrect decisions in the early diffusion stage can significantly cause misled shift cascades; and the bridge role of hubs is more influential than their pivotal position role in the process of misled shift cascades. Originality/value This implication can be extendable in the field of marketing, sequential voting, and technology, or innovation adoption.
