Mechanically alloyed composite anode materials based on SiO–SnxFeyCz for Li-ion batteries

A new family of composite materials as anodes for lithium-ion batteries, SiO–SnxFeyCz (x : y : z molar ratio), was synthesized by mechanical alloying. SiO is preferable because of its high capacity and the Sn–Fe–C alloys could be used as a buffer material to extend the cycle life of cells. Rather than expensive and toxic cobalt, we selected cheap and environmentally benign iron instead. The aim of this work is to find the optimal point by tuning the composition of Sn–Fe–C in the hope of obtaining better electrochemical performance. Different combinations were studied by high-energy X-ray diffraction and electrochemical methods. The results indicated that carbon can improve the cycle life, the amount of iron affects phase formation greatly, and the FeSn2 phase should be avoided because of its detrimental effect on cycle life. The 50 wt% SiO–50 wt% Sn30Fe30C40 composition was studied using the pair distribution function and Mössbauer spectroscopy. This material exhibits high specific capacity (900 mA h g−1 at C/6 rate) with good cycle life and rate capability. These results indicate that SiO–SnxFeyCz are promising candidate anode materials for commercial rechargeable lithium batteries.

Identifying Hidden Li–Si–O Phases for Lithium‐Ion Batteries via First‐Principle Thermodynamic Calculations

SiO–based materials are promising alloys and conversion‐type anode materials for lithium‐ion batteries and are recently found to be excellent dendrite‐proof layers for lithium‐metal batteries. However, only a small fraction of the Li–Si–O compositional space has been reported, significantly impeding the understanding of the phase transition mechanisms and the rational design of these materials both as anodes and as protection layers for lithium‐metal anodes. Herein, we identify three new thermodynamically stable phases within the Li–Si–O ternary system (Li 2 SiO 5 , Li 4 SiO 6, and Li 4 SiO 8 ) in addition to the existing records via first‐principle calculations. The electronic structure simulation shows that Li 2 SiO 5 and Li 4 SiO 8 phases are metallic in nature, ensuring high electronic conductivity required as electrodes. Moduli calculations demonstrate that the mechanical strength of Li–Si–O phases is much higher than that of lithium metal. The diffusion barriers of interstitial Li range from 0.1 to 0.6 eV and the interstitial Li hopping serves as the dominating diffusion mechanism in the Li–Si–O ternary systems compared with vacancy diffusion. These findings provide a new strategy for future discovery of improved alloying anodes for lithium‐ion batteries and offer important insight towards the understanding of the phase transformation mechanism of alloy‐type protection layers on lithium‐metal anodes.

High‐pressure Raman study on CeO₂ nanospheres self‐assembled by 5 nm CeO₂ nanoparticles

Abstract CeO 2 undergoes a first‐order phase transition from fluorite to α‐PbCl 2 ‐type structure under high pressure. To evaluate the changes in physical properties of CeO 2 nanomaterials as the particle size decreasing, high‐pressure Raman study under quasi‐hydrostatic condition has been performed on CeO 2 nanospheres self‐assembled by 5 nm CeO 2 nanoparticles at room temperature. Surprisingly, as the pressure elevate to 34 GPa, the CeO 2 nanospheres still retain the cubic fluorite‐type structure, indicating the sample is more stable than the bulk counterpart. Whereas, previous high‐pressure studies show the phase transition at 22.3/26.5 GPa for 12 nm CeO 2 nanoparticles, which is less stable than the bulk materials. The enhancement of phase stability might be attributed to the increase of surface energy of CeO 2 nanospheres as the size of the building units decrease.

Reversing the Nucleophilicity of Active Sites in CoP₂ Enables Exceptional Hydrogen Evolution Catalysis

Precisely constructing the local configurations of active sites to achieve on-demand catalytic functions is highly critical yet challenging. Herein, an anion-deficient strategy to precisely capture Ru single atoms on the anion vacancies of CoP2 (Ru-SA/Pv-CoP2 ) is developed. Refined structural characterizations reveal that the Ru single atoms preferably bind to the anion vacancy sites and consequently build a superior catalytic surface with neighboring CoP and CoRu coordination states for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysis. The prepared Ru-SA/Pv-CoP2 nanowires exhibit an unprecedented overpotential of 17 mV at 10 mA cm-2geo , and the corresponding mass activity is 52.2 times higher than the benchmark Pt/C catalyst at the overpotential of 50 mV. Theoretical analysis illustrates that the introduced Ru-SAs can reverse electrons state distribution (from nucleophilic P sites to electrophilic Ru sites) and boost the activation of water molecules and hydrogen production. More importantly, such a construction strategy is also applicable for Pt single atom coupling, suggesting its generality in building catalytic sites. The capability to precisely construct active sites offers a powerful platform to manipulate the catalytic performance of HER catalysts and beyond.
