A RETROSPECTIVE ANALYSIS OF 973 ADMISSIONS ON MENTAL DISORDER INDUCED BY ALCOHOL FROM 2000 TO 2007

Objective:To understand the trends on the numbers and proportions of alcohol related admission in a psychiatry hospital from 2000 to 2007,and surveythe proportion of diagnosis in these subjects according to ICD-10 and their demographic characteristics.Methods:The data of inpatients due to alcohol and mental disorder were collected.The medical records of all inpatients diagnosed as mental disorder induced by alcohol were reviewed.The demographic informationand illness-related informationwere collected and analyzed retrospectively.Results:(1) Altogether 973 cases admitted to the Second Affiliated Hospital of Jining Medical College from 2000 to 2007 were diagnosed as alcohol-induced mental disorder,accounting for 2.04% in all inpatient admitted due to metal disorders.(2) Although the number of inpatients induced by alcohol increased per year,the trend analysis showed no significant difference(χ2=1.56,P0.05) in the proportion of alcohol related admission in all inpatients.(3) Psychosis induced by alcohol was the first rank diagnosis(82.6%),and alcoholism was the second one(16.2%).(4) Of the 973 cases,97.9% was male,64.5% had middle school education,94.6% was married,57.3% was peasants and 19.6% was workers.Their averageage was 47.6 a±s 9.6 a.Conclusion:The admission rate of mental disorder induced by alcohol from 2000 to 2007 was high.Most of the patients were admitted due to psychosis induced by alcohol and alcoholism.

The antibiotic clofoctol suppresses glioma stem cell proliferation by activating KLF13

Gliomas account for approximately 80% of primary malignant tumors in the central nervous system. Despite aggressive therapy, the prognosis of patients remains extremely poor. Glioma stem cells (GSCs) which considered as the potential target of therapy for their crucial role in therapeutic resistance and tumor recurrence, are believed to be key factors for the disappointing outcome. Here, we took advantage of GSCs as the cell model to perform high-throughput drug screening and the old antibiotic, clofoctol, was identified as the most effective compound, showing reduction of colony-formation and induction of apoptosis of GSCs. Moreover, growth of tumors was inhibited obviously in vivo after clofoctol treatment especially in primary patient-derived xenografts (PDXs) and transgenic xenografts. The anticancer mechanisms demonstrated by analyzing related downstream genes and discovering the targeted binding protein revealed that clofoctol exhibited the inhibition of GSCs by upregulation of Kruppel-like factor 13 (KLF13), a tumor suppressor gene, through clofoctol's targeted binding protein, Upstream of N-ras (UNR). Collectively, these data demonstrated that induction of KLF13 expression suppressed growth of gliomas and provided a potential therapy for gliomas targeting GSCs. Importantly, our results also identified the RNA-binding protein UNR as a drug target.

Effects of Caragana microphylla plantation on soil organic carbon storage in horqin sandy land

A field study was conducted to study soil organic carbon dynamics in Caragana microphylla stands in an age sequence of 0-,5-,10-,and 22-yr plantations in the Horqin Sandy Land,north China.The results show that soil organic carbon contents and storages in each soil layer increases with the increasing years of C.microphylla plantation.No significant differences in soil organic carbon storage at the depth of 0～50 cm are found between 5-and 0-yr C.microphylla plantations.It increases rapidly during 5～10yr plantation but tends to slow down during 10～22yr plantation.The results of soil organic carbon dynamics show that C.microphylla plantation is a practical forestry engineering measure in rehabilitating the ecosystems in the Horqin Sandy Land.
