Professional identity is crucial for the development of pharmacy students' professional confidence, learning motivation and future career choices. However, how to develop students' professional identity in pharmacy education is an underdeveloped field of research. The critical component of professional identity has been considered formed as a result of stepwise socialization. Therefore, pharmacy professional identity might be influenced by associations with other health care professionals, such as physicians and nurses, who are involved in health care collaboration with pharmacists. This work aimed to investigate the effect of a student-led interview intervention called "Pharmacy from the perspectives of other health professions" as an intervention on pharmacy freshmen's perceptions and positivity toward the pharmacy profession. In this prospective pre/postintervention study, the effect of the interview intervention on students' job preferences as well as attitudes toward the pharmacy profession and pharmacists' role in health care was evaluated among 70 first-year pharmacy undergraduates equally divided into intervention and control groups using a self-developed questionnaire.Compared with the controls, the numbers of respondents reporting no specific reasons for selecting the pharmacy profession and stating that they were unclear about their preferred post-graduation work sector were significantly reduced after the intervention. Participating in the intervention increased the number of students who agreed or strongly agreed that they would have a fulfilling and socially respectable career. Significantly more students in the intervention group agreed with the pharmacists' role in health care as well as the current situation of pharmacy human resources than in the control group. This student-led interview intervention could be applied as an effective tool for improving students' professional identity and positivity in pharmacy education.
Detecting a variety of biological samples accurately and swiftly in an integrated way is of great practical significance. Currently, biofluorescent spectrum detection still largely relies on microscopic spectrometers. In this study, we propose an integrable method to detect biofluorescent spectrums with designed liquid crystal tunable filter (LCTF), in order to identify typical biological samples such as cells and bacteria. Hela cells labeled with red and green fluorescent proteins and Pseudomonas with fluorescence wavelengths of 610 nm, 509 nm and 450 nm, respectively, are inspected. High-resolution (6 μm) biofluorescent results have been achieved, together with clear images of the Hela cell clusters and the Pseudomonas bacteria colonies. Biofluorescence signals can be detected at a high transmittance (above 80%), and the response time of the device can reach 20 ms or below. The proposed method has the potential to be integrated into a microfluidic system to detect and identify the biofluorescent signals as a high throughput, low-cost option, for both high resolution and large field observation applications.
The incidence of obesity in our country is increasing year by year. Diet and lifestyle interventions are the most commonly used weight loss measures, but their intervention effects are affected by individual genetics, environment and other factors. Genome-wide association analysis has found many SNPs related to weight loss, and explored the interaction between these loci and diet, intestinal flora and other environmental factors. This article summarizes the study of single nucleotide polymorphisms, the analysis of gene-environment interactions related to diet interventions for weight loss, and the multi-loci analysis and prediction models such as genetic risk scores and machine learning modeling in weight loss, which provides reference for the further application and development of the precise nutrition in medical weight loss. .
Carbon nanotube cold cathodes with different binding materials have been prepared by using screen printed method. Cycles of applied field are applied to improve the field emission property of the as-prepared cathodes. The surface morphologies before and after treatment were observed using scanning electron microscopy. It is found that the treatment could expose the carbon nanotubes. By using optimal binding particles and combining different treatment methods, uniform emission could be achieved at low applied field.
Abstract Mortalin (encoded by HSPA9) is a mitochondrial chaperone often overexpressed in cancer through as-yet-unknown mechanisms. By searching different RNA-sequencing datasets, we found that ESRRA is a transcription factor highly correlated with HSPA9 in thyroid cancer, especially in follicular, but not C cell-originated, tumors. Consistent with this correlation, ESRRA depletion decreased mortalin expression only in follicular thyroid tumor cells. Further, ESRRA expression and activity were relatively high in thyroid tumors with oncocytic characteristics, wherein ESRRA and mortalin exhibited relatively high functional overlap. Mechanistically, ESRRA directly regulated HSPA9 transcription through a novel ESRRA-responsive element located upstream of the HSPA9 promoter. Physiologically, ESRRA depletion suppressed thyroid tumor cell survival via caspase-dependent apoptosis, which ectopic mortalin expression substantially abrogated. ESRRA depletion also effectively suppressed tumor growth and mortalin expression in the xenografts of oncocytic or ESRRA-overexpressing human thyroid tumor cells in mice. Notably, our Bioinformatics analyses of patient data revealed two ESRRA target gene clusters that contrast oncocytic-like and anaplastic features of follicular thyroid tumors. These findings suggest that ESRRA is a tumor-specific regulator of mortalin expression, the ESRRA-mortalin axis has higher significance in tumors with oncocytic characteristics, and ESRRA target gene networks can refine molecular classification of thyroid cancer. *The authors would like to note that Wenjing Chen and Young Shin Song contributed equally to this work.
This study investigated the protective effects of guaiane-type sesquiterpenoids isolated from Dendranthema morifolium (Ramat.) S. Kitam flowers on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced injury in H9c2 cardiomyocyte. Cell viability was determined by thiazolyl blue tetrazolium bromide (MTT). The content of released tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF- α) and interleukin 6 (IL-6) was evaluated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The levels of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and creatine phosphate kinase (CK) were measured by using commercial available kits. The protein expression levels of pelF2 α, GRP78, Bax, caspase-3, caspase-9, Bcl-2, LC3-II, and p62 were measured by in-cell Western. Flow cytometry was used to detect H9c2 cardiomyocyte apoptosis. Compounds 5, 7, 1, 8, and 2 exhibited the effects of cardioprotection and activity sequence enhancement. The levels of IL-6, TNF- α, LDH, CK, pelF2 α, GRP78, Bax, caspase-3, caspase-9, p62, and H9c2 cardiomyocyte apoptosis were increased in LPS-treated H9c2 cardiomyocyte, while those of Bcl-2 and LC3-II were decreased. These effects could be effectively reversed by compounds 5, 7, 1, 8, and 2. Results demonstrated that the guaiane-type sesquiterpenoids could prevent LPS-induced injury in cardiomyocyte by decreasing endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, apoptosis, and autophagy as well as downregulating the inflammatory mediators. In addition, the active groups of guaiane-type sesquiterpenoids might be the angelate at C-8 and the exocyclic double bond at C-11.
