Enhanced Thermoelectric Performance through Tuning Bonding Energy in Cu₂Se_1–xS_x Liquid-like Materials

Thermoelectric materials require an optimal carrier concentration to maximize electrical transport and thus thermoelectric performance. Element doping and composition off-stoichiometry are the two general and effective approaches for optimizing carrier concentrations, which have been successfully applied in almost all semiconductors. In this study, we propose a new strategy called bonding energy variation to tune the carrier concentrations in Cu2Se-based liquid-like thermoelectric compounds. By utilizing the different bond features in Cu2Se and Cu2S, alloying S at the Se sites successfully increases the bonding energy to fix Cu atoms in the crystal lattice to suppress the formation of Cu vacancies, leading to greatly reduced carrier concentrations toward the optimal value. Via a combination of the lowered electrical and lattice thermal conductivities and the relatively good carrier mobility caused by the weak alloy scattering potential, ultrahigh zT values are achieved in slightly S-doped Cu2Se with a maximal value of 2.0 at 1000 K, 30% higher than that in nominally stoichiometric Cu2Se.

One‐step Synthesis and Enhanced Thermoelectric Properties of Polymer–Quantum Dot Composite Films

Abstract Conventional syntheses of polymer–inorganic composite thermoelectric materials suffer major problems such as inhomogeneity, large particle size, and oxidation that result in ineffective loading. Now a one‐step synthesis can be used to fabricate high‐quality small‐sized anions codoped poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene):dodecylbenzenesulfonate/Cl‐tellurium (PEDOT:DBSA/Cl‐Te) composite films using a series of novel Te IV ‐based oxidants. The synchronized production of PEDOT and Te results in thick and homogeneous films containing evenly distributed and well‐protected Te quantum dots. Owing to the heavily doped crystalline polymer matrix as well as the <5 nm unoxidized Te quantum dot loading, at low Te concentrations as 2.1–5.8 wt %, the films exhibits high power factors of about 100 μW m −1 K −2 , which is 50 % higher compared to a pure PEDOT:DBSA film.

Extraordinarily harvesting waste heat by thermally regenerative Zn-ion battery

Abstract Typical technologies that can convert waste heat into electricity include thermoelectrics, thermionic capacitors, thermo-cells, thermal charge cells, and thermally regenerative electrochemical cycles. They have small thermal-to-electrical conversion efficiency or poor stability, severely hindering the efficient recovery of waste heat. Herein, we successfully developed a thermally regenerative Zn-ion battery to work under Carnot-like mode to efficiently harvest waste heat into electricity. Through introducing Layered Double Hydroxides to modify battery’s anode reaction, a record absolute high temperature coefficient of 2.944 mV/K is achieved in NiHCF/Zn battery, leading to a high thermal-to-electrical conversion efficiency of 29.24% of the Carnot efficiency and an extraordinary energy efficiency of 104.11% when the battery is charged at 50 ℃ and discharged at 5 ℃. This work demonstrates that the thermally regenerative batteries can effectively harvest waste heat to provide a powerful energy conversion technology.

Mesoporous Nickel Sulfide Microsphere Encapsulated in Nitrogen, Sulfur Dual‐Doped Carbon with Large Subsurface Region for Enhanced Sodium Storage

Abstract Nickel sulfides are promising anode candidates in sodium ion batteries (SIBs) due to high capacity and abundant reserves. However, their applications are restricted by poor cycling stability and slow reaction kinetics. Thus, mesoporous nickel sulfide microsphere encapsulated in nitrogen, sulfur dual‐doped carbon (MNS@NSC) is prepared. The packaged structure and carbon matrix restrain the volume variation together, the N, S dual‐doping improves the electronic conductivity and offers extra active sites for sodium storage. Ex‐situ X‐ray diffraction appeals copper collector adsorbs polysulfide to inhibit the polysulfide accumulation and enhance conductivity. Moreover, the large subsurface attributed to C‐S‐S‐C bonding further boosts pseudocapacitive capacity, conducive to charge transfer. As a result, MNS@NSC delivers a high reversible capacity of 640.2 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles at 0.1 A g −1 , an excellent rate capability (569.8 mAh g −1 at 5 A g −1 ), and a remained capacity of 513.8 mAh g −1 after undergoing 10000 circulations at 10 A g −1 . The MNS@NSC|| Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 full cell shows a cycling performance of specific capacity of 230.8 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles at 1 A g −1 . This work puts forward a valid strategy of combing structural design and heteroatom doping to synthesize high‐performance nickel sulfide materials in SIBs.
