The application of the folded pendulum (FP) as a tiltmeter is proposed and some features of it have been studied both theoretically and experimentally. First, FP could have a quite low resonance frequency due to its mechanical structure. The period of our prototype FP is 6.2 s and the amplification factor is about 100. Second, FP is not sensitive to the environmental temperature variation but seriously affected by the temperature gradient. The experiment with a temperature gradient modulation shows that the static equilibrium position of the FP will change by 2.5 μrad if the temperature difference between the horizontal platform and the base of the FP is 0.1 °C. With a prototype FP, we have observed obvious tilt tides, and the calibration result shows that the resolution of the FP is about 1.2 nrad.

The Investigation of Metamaterials by Measuring the Power of Transmission in the Terahertz Regime

We present the design and fabrication of metamaterials, and investigated the power transmission properties of the metamaterials in the frequency ranging from 1.04THz to 4.25THz. The measured results reveal a global maximum transmission peak at 2.52THz. We compared measured power transmission performances of four types of metamaterials microstructures, and analyzed their transmission differences.

Research on supporting mounts of spheres in measurement of gravitational constant G

The ongoing precision measurement of the gravitational constant G at our group is performed by using two different kinds of methods: time-of-swing method (ToS) and angular acceleration feedback method. In the two methods, the stainless steel spheres are employed as source masses, and the position stability of the spheres is an important parameter, which make suitable mounts for supporting the spheres needed extremely. In this paper, an upgraded three-point mount is introduced and tested in detail. Experimental results show that, for the sphere supported by the three-point mount used in the ToS method, the repeatability, the temperature influence, and the vibration influence are all less than 0.1 μm (about 2 ppm for the value of G). For the sphere supported by the three-point mount used in the AAF method, similar results are obtained, the largest change of the sphere’s position is about 0.6 μm, introduced by a temperature change of 1 °C, which also results in an uncertainty of 2 ppm for the value of G.

Power modulation of vortex beams using phase/amplitude adjustable transmissive coding metasurfaces

Abstract Independent control of amplitude and phase using a single aperture is challenging but highly desirable due to its great potential applications in high-quality holograms, modern wireless communications, and other modern devices. In this paper, based on the generalized superposition principle of metasurfaces (MSs), a transmissive coding MS is proposed to manipulate the power transmitted toward specific angular directions. To this end, a cascaded coding meta-atom is presented to control both transmission amplitude and phase responses. These particles with 2-bit-phase and 1-bit-amplitude discretizations are designed by printing a metallic bar, square loops and split-ring resonators on dielectrics placed in a cascaded geometry. As an application, vortex beams carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM-VB) with controllable transmitted power levels are realized by suitably distributing the phase/amplitude adjustable coding particles. Three illustrative examples are demonstrated to realize high-power OAM-VB ( h -OAM-VB), low-power OAM-VB ( l -OAM-VB), and medium-power OAM-VB ( m -OAM-VB), respectively. Some OAM-VBs with flexible features are also generated using the convolution operations of digital coding patterns. The presented models are experimentally validated in which m -OAM-VB and h -OAM-VB patterns are successfully generated at Ku band. The proposed MS-based architecture would enable flexible power allocations in the next generation of multi-input-multi-output communication platforms.

Dynamical Behaviour of a Modulated Torsion Pendulum in Test of Weak Equivalence Principle

The dynamic behaviour of a modulated torsion pendulum used to test the weak equivalence principle (WEP) is studied in detail. Theoretical analysis shows that the pendulum will be driven by a force with double-frequency of the rotating turntable no matter whether the WEP is valid or not. This double-frequency effect should be considered for improving the sensitivity of the modulated pendulum in test of the WEP.

Dual-mode liquid crystal microlens arrays

Based on our previous works on liquid crystal microlenses driven and adjusted electrically, we present a new type of liquid crystal microlens arrays with dual-mode function (DLCMAs). Currently, the DLCMAs developed by us consist of a top electrode couple constructed by two layers of controlling electrode structure, and a bottom electrode. The top two electrode layers are respectively deposited over both sides of a glass substrate and insulated by a thin SiO₂ coating, so as to act as the mode-control-part in the DLCMAs. Another planar electrode layer acting as the base electrode is deposited over the surface of a glass substrate. Two glass substrates with fabricated electrode structure are coupled into a microcavity filled by nematic liquid crystal material. The DLCMAs proposed in this paper present excellent divergence and convergence performances only loading relatively low driving voltage signal. The common optical properties of the micro-optics-structures are given experimentally.

Multiple-view D²NNs array: realizing robust 3D object recognition

As an optical-based classifier of the physical neural network, the independent diffractive deep neural network ( D 2 N N ) can be utilized to learn the single-view spatial featured mapping between the input lightfields and the truth labels by preprocessing a large number of training samples. However, it is still not enough to approach or even reach a satisfactory classification accuracy on three-dimensional (3D) targets owing to already losing lots of effective lightfield information on other view fields. This Letter presents a multiple-view D 2 N N s array (MDA) scheme that provides a significant inference improvement compared with individual D 2 N N or Res- D 2 N N by constructing a different complementary mechanism and then merging all base learners of distinct views on an electronic computer. Furthermore, a robust multiple-view D 2 N N s array (r-MDA) framework is demonstrated to resist the redundant spatial features of invalid lightfields due to severe optical disturbances.
