Noise-assisted multivariate empirical mode decomposition based causal decomposition for brain-physiological network in bivariate and multiscale time series

Abstract Objective. Noise-assisted multivariate empirical mode decomposition (NA-MEMD) based causal decomposition depicts a cause and effect relationship that is not based on the term of prediction, but rather on the phase dependence of time series. Here, we present the NA-MEMD based causal decomposition approach according to the covariation and power views traced to Hume and Kant: a priori cause-effect interaction is first acquired, and the presence of a candidate cause and of the effect is then computed from the sensory input somehow. Approach. Based on the definition of NA-MEMD based causal decomposition, we show such causal relation is a phase relation where the candidate causes are not merely followed by effects, but rather produce effects. Main results. The predominant methods used in neuroscience (Granger causality, empirical mode decomposition-based causal decomposition) are validated, showing the applicability of NA-MEMD based causal decomposition, particular to brain physiological processes in bivariate and multiscale time series. Significance. We point to the potential use in the causality inference analysis in a complex dynamic process.

Binary Fingerprint Image Thinning Using Template-Based PCNNs

This correspondence presents a coarse-to-fine binary-image-thinning algorithm by proposing a template-based pulse-coupled neural-network model. Under the control of coupled templates, this algorithm iteratively skeletonizes a binary image by changing the load signals of pulse neurons. A direction-constraining scheme for avoiding fingerprint ridge spikes has been discussed. Experiments show that this algorithm is effective for fingerprint thinning, as well as other common images. Moreover, this algorithm can be coupled with a fingerprint identification system to improve the recognition performance.

Review of Vanadium Production Part I: Primary Resources

Vanadium is a strategic transition metal that has been extensively utilized in steelmaking, green chemistry, energy storage, and aviation industries, and the sustainable development of vanadium production industries is therefore of significant importance. In this review, the production of vanadium using primary resources including vanadium titano-magnetite, vanadium slag, vanadium bearing stone coal, and carnotite has been reviewed, with the elaboration of typical industrial processes. The processes with respect to the cleaner production of vanadium have been discussed in detail to provide information for peer researchers to understand the challenges of this industry and future research directions. In addition, the resource, market, and major organizations of vanadium production have also been discussed in this review, presenting a general overview of this important industry.

Optimization of control parameters for pmsg-based wind farm and SVG considering subsynchronous interaction

Recently, sub-synchronous oscillations (SSO) phenomena have occurred in direct-drive permanent magnetic synchronous generator (D-PMSG) based wind farms. The majority of wind farms have installed the static var generator (SVG) to improve the voltage stability. But some oscillation events showed that SVG have produced adverse effect to the system. There are distinct subsynchronous interactions (SSI) between PMSG-based wind turbines and SVG. Researches have pointed out that when connected to a weak grid the improper control parameter is the main course of the SSI. Therefore, the control parameter of the system need be optimized considering the SSI problems. The mathematical model the analytical transfer function is derived firstly. Then the stable and feasible region of SVG's and PMSG's control parameter are determined according to stability criterion. At last, some coordination methods for the control parameters are proposed considering the SSI problems, and the electromagnetic simulations is carried out to verify the correctness and effectiveness.

Effects of transient powertrain shift dynamics on vehicle handling

This paper investigates the effect of drive shaft torque variations during transmission shifts on vehicle handling performance. In this paper, a lumped mass model for a four-speed automatic transmission powertrain and a 14-degrees-of-freedom vehicle model have been developed and used jointly for the simulation of vehicle transient behaviour during the shift processes. In the investigation, the powertrain model is used as the preprocessor to obtain realistic drive shaft torque that reflects the torque variations intrinsic of transmission shifts. The drive shaft torque thus obtained then serves as the input for the vehicle suspension model. This approach provides better accuracy for vehicle handling analysis than the existing approach that assumes a steady-state axle torque. A mid-size sedan was used as an example in the investigation. Based on model simulation, vehicle responses to powertrain shift transients under various road conditions were quantitatively analysed and compared with that obtained by the existing method.

Pitch Cone Design and Avoidance of Contact Envelope and Tooth Undercutting for Conical Worm Gear Drives

This paper presents a systematic approach for the design, generation and analysis of conical worm gear drives. The approach is based on the mathematical formulations on the mesh, tooth generation process and conditions for the appearance of contact envelope and tooth undercutting of this type of worm drives. The formulation is implemented by a computer model developed in MatLab environment. By model simulation on worm gear mesh or generation, the conditions for the formation of contact envelope and tooth undercutting are accurately determined for the proper design of worm gear blank and tooth geometry. The computer model can also be used to calculate worm gear tooth geometry and create solid models for the worm gear drives. Numerical examples on conical worm gear drive design, analysis on the problems of contact envelope, limit line and limit point are included in the paper.
