Paleoepidemiology of cribra orbitalia: Insights from early seventh millennium BP Con Co Ngua, Vietnam

Abstract Objectives We test the hypothesis that the condition(s) leading to the development of cribra orbitalia at Con Co Ngua, an early seventh millennium sedentary foraging community in Vietnam, effectively reduced the resilience of the population to subsequent health/disease impacts. An assessment of both the implications and potential etiology of cribra orbitalia in this specific population is carried out. Methods The effective sample included 141 adults aged ≥15 years (53 females, 71 males, and 17 unknown sex) and 15 pre‐adults aged ≤14 years. Cribra orbitalia was identified by way of cortical bone porosity of the orbital roof initiated within the diplöic space, rather than initiated subperiosteally. The approach is also robust to the misidentification of various pseudo‐lesions. Resultant data was analyzed using Kaplan–Meier survival analysis. Results Median survival is higher in adults aged ≥15 years without cribra orbitalia than those with this lesion. For the pre‐adult cohort, the opposite pattern is seen where median survival is higher in those with cribra orbitalia than those without. Conclusion Adults displayed increased frailty and pre‐adults increased resilience with respect to cribra orbitalia. The differential diagnosis for a survival analysis of adults and pre‐adults with and without cribra orbitalia included iron deficiency anemia and B12/folate deficiency, parasitism (including hydatid disease and malaria) in addition to thalassemia. The most parsimonious explanation for observed results is for both thalassemia and malaria being the chief etiological agents, while appreciating these conditions interact with, and can cause, other forms such as hematinic deficiency anemias.

Does Going Public in Different Stock Markets Affect the First-Day Return of Chinese IPO?

This paper talks about the relationship between going public and Chinese listed companies' first-day return.The dual listing becomes a more popular choice for companies to get equity financing because it can help companies receive a higher initial return on the first day of going public and approach a higher financial market efficiency.To investigate this relationship, we collect data of companies who choose to dual list from wind databases.Our results found that going public in both the Hongkong market and A-shares, companies can have higher first-day returns.However, when companies go public in both the Hongkong and U.S. markets, the result is not statistically significant.

Impact of Deep Shale Gas Dense-Cutting Fracturing Parameters on EUR

Deep shale formations pose significant challenges in forming high-conductivity fractures, leading to low ultimate recoverable reserves (EUR) per well under conventional fracturing techniques. Dense-cutting fracturing is a commonly employed method to enhance the EUR of individual wells; however, the critical process parameters influencing EUR remain unclear. This study develops a novel EUR calculation model tailored for deep shale gas dense-cutting, integrating the Warren-Root model with the constant-volume gas reservoir material balance equation. The model comprehensively incorporates Knudsen diffusion and adsorption-desorption phenomena in deep shale gas, corrects apparent permeability, and employs the finite element method to simulate dynamic pressure depletion during production. The study examines the impact of fracture half-lengths, cluster spacing, fracture conductivity and horizontal section lengths on EUR under tight-cutting fracturing. Orthogonal experiments combined with multiple linear regression analysis reveal the hierarchy of influence among the four factors on EUR: horizontal section length > fracture half-length > cluster spacing > fracture conductivity. The study derives EUR correlation expressions that incorporate the effects of crack half-length, cluster spacing, fracture conductivity, and horizontal segment length. The orthogonal experimental results indicate that EUR exhibits positive correlations with crack half-length, fracture conductivity, and horizontal segment length, while showing a negative correlation with cluster spacing. The multiple regression equation achieves a coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.962 and an average relative error of 3.79%, outperforming traditional prediction methods in both accuracy and computational simplicity. The findings are of substantial significance for the rapid estimation of EUR in individual wells following deep shale gas fracturing and offer valuable theoretical insights for practical engineering applications.

The interrelationships between parental migration, home environment, and early child development in rural China: A cross-sectional study

A growing body of literature is providing evidence of a negative association between parental migration and child development. Meanwhile, the chain of relationships between parental migration, home environment, and early child development has not yet been well documented in China. This paper investigates the interrelationships between parental migration, home environment, and early child development in an undeveloped area of western rural China. In total, 444 households were included in the study. Bayley Scales of Infant Development version III (BSID-III), Home Observation Measurement of the Environment (HOME), and a socioeconomic questionnaire, were used to measure children’s development outcomes, home environment, and socioeconomic characteristics in sample households. A mediation effect model was used to estimate the interrelationships between parental migration, home environment, and child development. The results demonstrate that home environment works as a significant mediator, through which parental migration is associated with a 0.07 standard deviation (SD), 0.13 SD, 0.12 SD, and 0.10 SD decline in the child’s cognitive, language, motor, and social-emotional scores, respectively. For future studies, the key findings suggest that interventions aimed at improving the home environments of left-behind children might be necessary in rural China.

Maternal genetic history of ancient Tibetans over the past 4000 years

The settlement of the Tibetan Plateau epitomizes human adaptation to a high-altitude environment that poses great challenges to human activity. Here, we reconstruct a 4000-year maternal genetic history of Tibetans using 128 ancient mitochondrial genome data from 37 sites in Tibet. The phylogeny of haplotypes M9a1a, M9a1b, D4g2, G2a'c, and D4i show that ancient Tibetans share the most recent common ancestor with ancient Middle and Upper Yellow River populations around the Early and Middle Holocene. In addition, the connections between Tibetans and Northeastern Asians vary over the past 4000 years, with a stronger matrilineal connection between the two during 4000 BP-3000 BP, and a weakened connection after 3000 BP, that are coincident with climate change, followed by a reinforced connection after the Tubo period (1400 BP-1100 BP). Besides, an over 4000-year matrilineal continuity is observed in some of the maternal lineages. We also find the maternal genetic structure of ancient Tibetans is correlated to the geography and interactions between ancient Tibetans and ancient Nepal and Pakistan populations. Overall, the maternal genetic history of Tibetans can be characterized as a long-term matrilineal continuity with frequent internal and external population interactions that are dynamically shaped by geography, climate changes, as well as historical events.

Simultaneous characterization and quantification of flavonoids in Morus australis root as potential hepatoprotective nutraceutical

Morus australis distributed widely in China has high value in food and agriculture. Twelve phenolic compounds were isolated and identified as major constituents of M. australis root from Shaanxi province, China, while the protective effect of M. australis root on liver injury has never been determined in detail. In this study, the hepatoprotective ability of M. australis root was investigated in vivo and in vitro. The ethanol-water extract prepared from M. australis root showed protection on alcohol-induced liver damage in mice by decreasing the levels of serum alanine aminotransferase, aspartate transaminase, triacylglycerol and malondialdehyde, and by increasing glutathione contents. Furthermore, among 12 major constituents of M. australis root, 10 flavonoids (especially 1) showed protection against carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-intoxicated HepG2 cell lines by decreased lactic dehydrogenase levels. In addition a validated HPLC-DAD method was established for the quantitative analysis of 10 flavonoids in the bioactive extract. Practical applications Our results showed that M. australis root extract significantly alleviated the liver damage in mice. Ten flavonoids from the root of this plant exhibited protection on CCl4-intoxicated HepG2 cell lines. This study suggests that Morus australis root has hepatoprotective potential as a promising supplement for the prevention and treatment of liver diseases.

Characterizing Droughts During the Rice Growth Period in Northeast China Based on Daily SPEI Under Climate Change

In agricultural production, droughts occurring during the crucial growth periods of crops hinder crop development, while the daily-scale standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI) can be applied to accurately identify the drought characteristics. In this study, we used the statistical downscaling method to obtain the daily precipitation (Pr), maximum air temperature (Tmax) and minimum air temperature (Tmin) during the rice growing season in Heilongjiang Province from 2015 to 2100 under the SSP1-2.6, SSP2-4.5 and SSP5-8.5 in CMIP6, to study the spatial and temporal characteristics of drought during the rice growing season in cold region and the effect of climate change on drought characteristics. The potential evapotranspiration (PET0) was calculated using the regression correction method of the Hargreaves formula recommended by the FAO, and the daily SPEI was calculated to quantitatively identify the drought classification. The Pearson correlation coefficient was used to analyze the correlation between the meteorological factors (Pr, Tmax, Tmin), PET0 and SPEI. The results showed that: (1) Under 3 SSP scenarios, Pr showed an increasing trend from the northwest to the southeast, Tmax showed an increasing trend from the northeast to the southwest, and higher Tmin was mainly distributed in the east and west regions. (2) PET0 indicated an overall interannual rise in the three future SSP scenarios, with higher values mainly distributed in the central and western regions. The mean daily PET0 values ranged from 4.8 to 6.0 mm/d. (3) Under SSP1-2.6, rice mainly experienced mild drought and moderate drought (−0.5 ≥ SPEI > −1.5). The predominant drought classifications experienced were mild, moderate, and severe drought under SSP2-4.5 and SSP8.5 (−0.5 ≥ SPEI > −2.0). (4) The tillering stage experienced the highest drought frequency and drought intensity, with the longest drought lasting 24 days. However, the heading flower stage had the lowest drought frequency and drought intensity. The drought barycenter was mainly in Tieli and Suihua. (5) The PET0 was most affected by the Tmax, while the SPEI was most affected by the Pr. This study offers a scientific and rational foundation for understanding the drought sensitivity of rice in Northeast China, as well as a rationale for the optimal scheduling of water resources in agriculture in the future.

The association between prenatal micronutrient supplementation and early development of children under age two: Evidence from rural Guizhou, China

Maternal nutrition has been shown to positively impact the pregnancy outcomes of women, as demonstrated by a decreased rate of infants born with below-average weight and size for gestational age. However, current evidences supporting the association between prenatal micronutrient supplementation and the early development of children is limited and mixed. This study investigates the association between prenatal micronutrient supplementation and the development of children under age two in rural area of Guizhou province, China. We interviewed the primary caregivers of 446 children 6–24 months old in the study area. Based on the caregivers' self-reported information about micronutrient supplementation of the child's mother during pregnancy, we divided their children into the supplemented group and the non-supplemented group. The interviews also collected sociodemographic information about the mother, the child, other family members and the households. We used the Bayley Scales of Infant Development III (BSID-III) to measure children's cognitive, language, motor, and socioemotional abilities and employed a multivariate linear regression model adjusted for confounding variables to estimate the association of interest. Our data shows that 33.4% of mothers received micronutrient supplementation during pregnancy. Children in the supplemented-group had significantly higher mean scores in language (3.27; 95% CI: 0.42–6.13; p = 0.03) domain compared to children in the non-supplemented group. This study provides additional evidence for the association between prenatal micronutrient supplementation and improved language development of rural children in the first two years of life. The conclusion is of certain value to the local and even national policy makers.
