Diffusion and Modification of Marine Aerosol Particles over the Coastal Areas in China: A Case Study Using a Single Particle Analysis

Aerosol particles over coastal areas are subject to the modification of chemical composition during their transport and diffusion. For examining the modification, individual aerosol particles of 0.1–2-μm radius were collected at Shengshan Island (30°43′N, 122°48′E) in the East China Sea and at a coastal site of Shanghai (31°10′N, 121°26′E). The samples were examined with an energy-dispersive x-ray (EDX) analyzer attached with an electron microscope. Elemental composition of marine aerosols collected at Shengshan Island was compared with those collected at Shanghai. The results showed that increase in chlorine loss in sea salt particles is one of the main characteristics during the diffusion of marine aerosols into the coastal continent. Sulfur particles were present mainly in the radius range of 0.1–0.3 μm at Shengshan Island and were considered to be formed through heterogeneous processes during diffusion from the coastal land areas.

A process-based fire parameterization of intermediate complexity in a Dynamic Global Vegetation Model

Abstract. A process-based fire parameterization of intermediate complexity has been developed for global simulations in the framework of a Dynamic Global Vegetation Model (DGVM) in an Earth System Model (ESM). Burned area in a grid cell is estimated by the product of fire counts and average burned area of a fire. The scheme comprises three parts: fire occurrence, fire spread, and fire impact. In the fire occurrence part, fire counts rather than fire occurrence probability are calculated in order to capture the observed high burned area fraction in areas of high fire frequency and realize parameter calibration based on MODIS fire counts product. In the fire spread part, post-fire region of a fire is assumed to be elliptical in shape. Mathematical properties of ellipses and some mathematical derivations are applied to improve the equation and assumptions of an existing fire spread parameterization. In the fire impact part, trace gas and aerosol emissions due to biomass burning are estimated, which offers an interface with atmospheric chemistry and aerosol models in ESMs. In addition, flexible time-step length makes the new fire parameterization easily applied to various DGVMs. Global performance of the new fire parameterization is assessed by using an improved version of the Community Land Model version 3 with the Dynamic Global Vegetation Model (CLM-DGVM). Simulations are compared against the latest satellite-based Global Fire Emission Database version 3 (GFED3) for 1997–2004. Results show that simulated global totals and spatial patterns of burned area and fire carbon emissions, regional totals and spreads of burned area, global annual burned area fractions for various vegetation types, and interannual variability of burned area are reasonable, and closer to GFED3 than CLM-DGVM simulations with the commonly used Glob-FIRM fire parameterization and the old fire module of CLM-DGVM. Furthermore, average error of simulated trace gas and aerosol emissions due to biomass burning is 7% relative to GFED3. Results suggest that the new fire parameterization may improve the global performance of ESMs and help to quantify fire-vegetation-climate interactions on a global scale and from an Earth system perspective.

Comparison of chemical composition parameterization with optical retrieval for determining aerosol apparent refractive index

Aerosol refractive index is an important parameter relating its chemical composition with optical properties. Contained within this paper is presentation of two approaches to estimate the aerosol apparent complex refractive index: one is the partial molar refraction approach (PMRA) based on aerosol chemical composition analysis, and another is the light extinction retrieval (LER) from the aerosol scattering and absorption properties. Both are applied to the field measurement data of a continuous experiment for three months at the Jungfraujoch high-alpine station. The three-month median of the real part of the refractive index from the PMRA is 1.52 +/- 0.04, and the imaginary part is 0.003 +/- 0.002. Comparison of the results from the PMRA with those from the LER is made for the simultaneous measurements. Consistence of them is within 5 percent for the real part of the refractive index, and within a factor of 2 for the imaginary part.

Dynamic Analysis of Vegetation Cover and Prediction in Zhangye Region

The temporal and spatial variations of normalized difference vegetation index(NDVI) in Zhangye region during 2000—2008 were analyzed using the gravity center of vegetation,linear regression and R/S analysis based on the MODIS—NDVI data.The results show that the gravity center of vegetation moved eastward during 2000—2003,indicating increases of vegetation cover in the east and decreases in the west.The gravity centre of vegetation moved northward during 2006—2008,which revealed the vegetation increases in the north and decreases in the south during this period.Annual variations of the vegetation gravity centre were unstable from January to May and from November to January,but stable from May to November.Vegetation cover increased in basins of Shandan,Minle and Zhangye during recent ten years,which accounts for 75.98% of the whole study area.The main land use types of the study area were dry land and artificial grassland.The artificial vegetation increased faster than natural vegetation.Degraded regions distributed sporadically over Zhangye Basin and Qilian Mountain due to intensified human activities.The Hurst index of the growing season NDVI focused on 0.4~0.6,indicating weak sustainability and/or non-sustainability.However,the indices of each month in the growing seasons differed substantially.The Hurst index showed a transition of vegetation cover from sustainable in May to unsustainable in July,while the sustainability of the vegetation cover increased in August and September.The results also show different land use types in the order of increasing Hurst value as: unused land Ⅱ construction landgrasscultivated landunused land Ⅰforest.

Detection of the FecTT Mutation of Growth Differentiation Factor 9 Gene in Goats

The aim of the study was to detect the distribution of FecTT mutation of growth differentiation factor 9(GDF9) gene in Jining Grey,Guizhou White,Dazu Black,Shannan White,Gulin Ma,Matou,Boer,Chengdu Ma,Saanen Dairy,Wendeng Dairy,Banjiao,Jintang Black,Guanzhong Dairy,Chuandong White,Angora,Liaoning Cashmere and Inner Mongolia Cashmere goats by PCR-RFLP.The results indicated that the FecTT mutation of GDF9 gene was not detected in seventeen goat breeds tested.The FecTT mutation of GDF9 gene that had significant effect on fecundity of Thoka sheep might be have no significant effect on fecundity of the above seventeen goat breeds.

Influence of Atmospheric Teleconnections on Interannual Variability of Arctic-boreal Fires

<p>Fires across the Arctic-boreal zone (ABZ) play an important role in the boreal forest succession, permafrost thaw, and the regional and global carbon cycle and climate. These fires occur mainly in summer with large interannual variability. Previous studies primarily focused on the impacts of local surface climate and tropical El Ni&#241;o-Southern Oscillation (ENSO). This study, for the first time, comprehensively investigates the influence of summer leading large-scale atmospheric teleconnection patterns in the Northern Hemisphere extra-tropics on interannual variability of ABZ fires. We use correlation and regression analysis of 1997&#8211;2019 multiple satellite-based products of burned area and observed/reanalyzed climate data. Results show that eight leading teleconnection patterns significantly affect 63&#177;2% of burned areas across the ABZ. Western North America is affected by the East Pacific/North Pacific pattern (EP/NP) and the West Pacific pattern (WP); boreal Europe by the Scandinavia pattern (SCA); eastern North America, western and central Siberia, and southeastern Siberia by the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO); and eastern Siberia /Russian Far East by the East Atlantic pattern (EA). NAO/EA induces lower-tropospheric drier northwesterly/northerly airflow passing through the east of boreal North America/Eurasia, which decreases surface relative humidity. Other teleconnections trigger a high-pressure anomaly, forcing downward motion that suppresses cloud formation and increases solar radiation reaching the ground to warm the surface air as well as brings drier air downward to reduce surface relative humidity. The drier and/or warmer surface air can decrease fuel wetness and thus increase burned area. Our study highlights the important role of the extra-tropical teleconnection patterns on ABZ fires, which is much stronger than ENSO that was thought to control interannual variability of global fires. It also establishes a theoretical foundation for ABZ fire prediction based on extra-tropical teleconnections, and has the potential to facilitate ABZ fire prediction and management.</p>

Human impacts on 20th century fire dynamics and implications for global carbon and water trajectories

Abstract Fire is a fundamental Earth system process and the primary ecosystem disturbance on the global scale. It affects carbon and water cycles through changing terrestrial ecosystems, and at the same time, is regulated by weather and climate, vegetation characteristics, and, importantly, human ignitions and suppression (i.e., the direct human effect on fire). Here, we utilize the Community Land Model version 4.5 (CLM4.5) to quantify the impacts of changes in human ignition and suppression on fire dynamics and associated carbon and water cycles. We find that the impact is to significantly reduce the 20th century global burned area by a century average of 38 Mha/yr and by 103 Mha/yr at the end of the century. Land carbon gain is weakened by 17% over the 20th century, mainly due to increased human deforestation fires and associated escape fires (i.e., degradation fires) in the tropical humid forests, even though the decrease in burned area in many other regions due to human fire suppression acts to increase land carbon gain. The direct human effect on fire weakens the upward trend in global runoff throughout the century by 6% and enhances the upward trend in global evapotranspiration since ~ 1945 by 7%. In addition, the above impacts in densely populated, highly developed (if population density > 0.1 person/km2), or moderately populated and developed regions are of opposite sign to those in other regions. Our study suggests that particular attention should be paid to human deforestation and degradation fires in the tropical humid forests when reconstructing and projecting fire carbon emissions and net atmosphere-land carbon exchange and estimating resultant impacts of direct human effect on fire.

Peer Review: Impact of Solar Geoengineering on Wildfires in the 21st Century in CESM2/WACCM6

Abstract. We quantify future changes of wildfire burned area and carbon emissions in the 21st century under four Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs) scenarios and two SSP5-8.5-based solar geoengineering scenarios with a target surface temperature defined by SSP2-4.5: solar irradiance reduction (G6solar) and stratospheric sulfate aerosol injections (G6sulfur), and explore the mechanisms that drive solar geoengineering impacts on fires. This study is based on fully coupled climate-chemistry simulations with simulated occurrence of fires (area burnt and carbon emissions) using the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model Version 6 (WACCM6) as the atmospheric component of the Community Earth System Model Version 2 (CESM2). Globally, total wildfire burned area is projected to increase over the 21st century under scenarios without geoengineering and decrease under the two geoengineering scenarios. By the end of the century, the two geoengineering scenarios have lower burned area and fire carbon emissions than not only their base-climate scenario SSP5-8.5 but also the targeted-climate scenario SSP2-4.5. Geoengineering reduces wildfire occurrence through decreasing surface temperature and wind speed and increasing relative humidity and soil water, with the exception of boreal regions where geoengineering increases the occurrence of wildfires due to a decrease in relative humidity and soil water compared to present day. This leads to a global reduction in burned area and fire carbon emissions by the end of the century. However, geoengineering also yields reductions in precipitation compared to a warming climate, which offsets some of the fire reduction. Overall, the impacts of the different driving factors are larger on burned area than fire carbon emissions. In general, the stratospheric sulfate aerosol approach has a stronger fire-reducing effect than the solar irradiance reduction approach.
