Ozone/graphene oxide catalytic oxidation: a novel method to degrade emerging organic contaminant N, N-diethyl-m-toluamide (DEET)

Abstract N, N -diethyl- m -toluamide (DEET) is one of the important emerging contaminants that are being increasingly detected in reclaimed water as well as in drinking water sources. However, DEET is refractory to conventional biological treatment and pure ozone which is absent of hydroxyl radical. Current researches on the efficient removal of DEET are still quite limited. This study utilizes a novel method, namely ozone/graphene oxide (O 3 /GO), to investigate the effects on DEET removal in aqueous systems, especially in reclaimed water. The results indicate that the DEET degradation rate was significantly accelerated through the combined effect of GO and ozonation which can yield abundant hydroxyl radical, compared to pure ozone condition. According to hydroxyl radical scavenging experiments, hydroxyl radical was found to play a dominant role in synergistic removal of DEET. These findings can offer sound suggestions for future research on the removal of emerging organic contaminants. The information could also be beneficial to reclaimed water safety and sustainable management.

Scalable and switchable CO2-responsive membranes with high wettability for separation of various oil/water systems

Abstract Smart membranes with responsive wettability show promise for controllably separating oil/water mixtures, including immiscible oil-water mixtures and surfactant-stabilized oil/water emulsions. However, the membranes are challenged by unsatisfactory external stimuli, inadequate wettability responsiveness, difficulty in scalability and poor self-cleaning performance. Here, we develop a capillary force-driven confinement self-assembling strategy to construct a scalable and stable CO 2 -responsive membrane for the smart separation of various oil/water systems. In this process, the CO 2 -responsive copolymer can homogeneously adhere to the membrane surface by manipulating the capillary force, generating a membrane with a large area up to 3600 cm 2 and excellent switching wettability between high hydrophobicity/underwater superoleophilicity and superhydrophilicity/underwater superoleophobicity under CO 2 /N 2 stimulation. The membrane can be applied to various oil/water systems, including immiscible mixtures, surfactant-stabilized emulsions, multiphase emulsions and pollutant-containing emulsions, demonstrating high separation efficiency (>99.9%), recyclability, and self-cleaning performance. Due to robust separation properties coupled with the excellent scalability, the membrane shows great implications for smart liquid separation.

D ² Animator: Dual Distillation of StyleGAN For High-Resolution Face Animation

The style-based generator architectures (e.g. StyleGAN v1, v2) largely promote the controllability and explainability of Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs). Many researchers have applied the pretrained style-based generators to image manipulation and video editing by exploring the correlation between linear interpolation in the latent space and semantic transformation in the synthesized image manifold. However, most previous studies focused on manipulating separate discrete attributes, which is insufficient to animate a still image to generate videos with complex and diverse poses and expressions. In this work, we devise a dual distillation strategy (D2Animator) for generating animated high-resolution face videos conditioned on identities and poses from different images. Specifically, we first introduce a Clustering-based Distiller (CluDistiller) to distill diverse interpolation directions in the latent space, and synthesize identity-consistent faces with various poses and expressions, such as blinking, frowning, looking up/down, etc. Then we propose an Augmentation-based Distiller (AugDistiller) that learns to encode arbitrary face deformation into a combination of interpolation directions via training on augmentation samples synthesized by CluDistiller. Through assembling the two distillation methods, D2Animator can generate high-resolution face animation videos without training on video sequences. Extensive experiments on self-driving, cross-identity and sequence-driving tasks demonstrate the superiority of the proposed D2Animator over existing StyleGAN manipulation and face animation methods in both generation quality and animation fidelity.
