DPS-CR: A Task Scheduling Algorithm Based on Computation Reuse in Vehicular Edge Computing

In the realm of vehicular edge computing (VEC), where tasks generated by vehicles can choose local processing or be offloaded to nearby edge servers. However a prevalent issue arises due to the inherent spatiotemporal correlation observed among these tasks, this correlation results in similar tasks producing identical output results, leading to a significant amount of redundant computation. Consequently, this redundancy not only increases the workload on edge servers but also prolongs task completion time. Therefore, we design the Dynamic Programming Scheduling algorithm based on Computation-Reuse (DPS-CR), which adopts a computational reuse model that relies on vehicle road data fusion, while solving the offloading problem of vehicle generation tasks with bandwidth resource requirements under the common coverage range of multiple base stations (BSs). We simulated the situation of vehicles passing through the intersection in the uncongested scenario and the congested scenario. The experimental results show that, compared with baselines, the DPS-CR can significantly reduce system cost (SC) by effectively utilizing the resources offered by BSs. Moreover, our proposed DPS-CR can minimize the probability of task loss in vehicular environments.

Modeling Long-Distance Forward and Backward Diffusion Processes in Tracer Transport Using the Fractional Laplacian on Bounded Domains

Recent studies have emphasized the importance of the long-distance diffusion model in characterizing tracer transport occurring within both subsurface and surface environments, particularly in heterogeneous systems. Long-distance diffusion, often referred to as nonlocal diffusion, signifies that tracer particles may experience a considerably long distance in either the forward or backward direction along preferential channels during the transport. The classical advection–diffusion (ADE) model has been widely used to describe tracer transport; however, they often fall short in capturing the intricacies of nonlocal diffusion processes. The fractional operator has gained recognition among hydrologists due to its potential to capture distinct mechanisms of transport and storage for tracer particles exhibiting nonlocal dynamics. However, the hypersingularity of the fractional Laplacian operator presents considerable difficulties in its numerical approximation in bounded domains. This study focuses on the development and application of the fractional Laplacian-based model to characterize nonlocal tracer transport behavior, specifically considering both forward and backward diffusion processes on bounded domains. The Riesz fractional Laplacian provides a mathematical framework for describing tracer diffusion processes on a bounded domain, and a novel finite difference method (FDM) is introduced as an effective numerical solver for addressing the fractional Laplacian-based model. Applications reveal that the fractional Laplacian-based model can effectively capture the observed nonlocal tracer transport behavior in a heterogeneous system, and nonlocal tracer transport exhibits dynamic characteristics, influenced by the evolving heterogeneity of the media at various temporal scales.

Probing Asymmetry in Spatial-temporal Correlations in Quantum Causal Inference

Abstract Quantum correlations in space-time encapsulate the most defining aspects of quantum physics. The dual of the spatial and temporal perspectives are bind with a one-to-one correspondence between bipartite quantum states and quantum channels. Consequently, causal relations between quantum events can sometimes be inferred solely from correlation statistics, apparently contradicting the classical \textit{credo}, `correlation does not imply causation'[1-6]. However, since the spatial-temporal duality does not imply a full symmetry of measurement statistics between the two domains[7], the extent to which correlation alone identifies quantum causality ponders inquiry vital for both fundamental and practical interests. Here, demonstrating a unified geometrical representation of spatial-temporal quantum correlation, we show that certain non-unital channels create temporal correlation without spatial analogue and break the spatial-temporal symmetry. By implementing such channels in a photonic architecture, we observe this asymmetry and classify quantum correlations using a distance criterion, thus bringing empirical insight into causal inference in quantum mechanics.

Simulation of the Riprap Movement Using the Continuous-Time Random Walking Method

During the implementation of the riprap project, the underwater migration process of the stones is quite uncertain because of its difficulty to observe. The process of stone transportation is discrete, which makes it unsuitable to be described by a continuous differential equation. Therefore, considering the distribution of stone jumping and waiting, a continuous-time random walk (CTRW) model is established. Based on the actual engineering data, five schemes simulate the one-dimensional motion of riprap underwater and further discuss the spatial distribution and particle size of the riprap. The results show that the CTRW model can effectively predict the riverbed elevation change behavior caused by the riprap project. The suitability of the model for the prediction of riprap movement decreases first and then increases with the increase in the selected width. This indicates that the randomness of the motion of the riprap causes the width of the observation zone to have a significant effect on the overall behavior of riprap movement. When the width is large enough, the influence of the randomness of the motion can be reduced by the average movement behavior within the observation zone. While the observation time of riprap movement is from a short to long time scale, the transport behavior changes from subdiffusion to normal diffusion behavior.

An optimized entropy-based model for estimating river confluence hydrodynamics: Accounting for the effects of velocity dip

The entropy model has been successfully used to calculate the flow velocity profile of rivers according to the measured surface-flow velocity. However, it has limitations in the large river where the obvious secondary flow and flow dip (i.e., the location of maximum flow velocity moves down from the surface) occur. The confluence of rivers is usually characterized by strong secondary circulations, posing great challenges for the accurate flow velocity and discharge estimation. This paper aims to assess the effectiveness of the previous entropy-based approach in velocity estimation of a large confluence and then propose an optimized method. The flow velocity data of the large confluence between the Yangtze River and the Poyang Lake under different discharge ratios were used. The performance of the previous entropic model got worse for the stronger secondary circulation survey. To better estimate the confluence hydrodynamics, a moving average method was introduced with its advantage of smoothing data and integrated into the framework of the entropic method for the better assessment of dip parameter, and hence the better estimation of flow velocity profile. Furthermore, the maximum velocity was found to locate at one third of the total depth below the water surface. The range of entropic function 0.48∼0.68 could provide a basis for the determination under various flow conditions in rivers. The value of entropic function and the dip parameter got larger as the discharge ratio decreased. This research has expanded the application for estimating hydrodynamics in large rivers.

Leopard Cats Occupied Human Settlements in China for 3,500 years before the Arrival of Domestic cats in 600-900 CE around the Tang Dynasty

The earliest cats in human settlements in China were not domestic cats (Felis catus), but native leopard cats (Prionailurus bengalensis). To trace when and how domestic cats arrived in East Asia, we analyzed 22 feline bones from 14 sites across China spanning 5,000 years. Nuclear and mitochondrial genomes revealed that leopard cats began occupying anthropogenic scenes around 5,400 years ago and last appeared in 150 CE. Following several centuries' gap of archeological feline remains, the first known domestic cat (706 to 883 CE) in China was identified in Shaanxi during the Tang Dynasty. Genomic analysis suggested a white or partially white coat and a link to a contemporaneous domestic cat from Kazakhstan, indicating a likely dispersal route via the Silk Road. The two felids once independently occupied ancient anthropogenic environments in China but followed divergent paths and reached different destinations in human-animal interactions.
