Ultraflat Langmuir–Blodgett assembled graphene oxide saturable-absorber films for pulsed near-infrared laser generation

Large-scale production of ultraflat broadband saturable-absorber films is highly desired for passive mode-locked solid-state lasers. However, the current vapour deposition and spin coating routes for fabricating saturable absorbers are suffering from the limited flexibility in substrate choice and complexity of mass production processes. Here, we demonstrate an ultraflat carboxyl-functionalized graphene oxide (GO-COOH) saturable absorber (SA) film via Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) assembly for solid state laser mode-locking. Hydrophilic carboxyl groups from GO sheets weaken the aggregation effect thus contribute to the uniform and stable dispersion of GO sheets in water. Such GO suspensions are made into an ultrathin large-area graphene-based SA film by a LB assembly process ensuring high surface uniformity. The room-temperature and highly repeated operation for GO LB films avoids the thermal damage of GO sheets and improves the membrane repeatability. Consequently, the ultrathin GO-COOH SA shows the modulation depth (2.3%) and low saturation intensity (24.7 KW/cm2) under 1064 nm laser irradiation. By inserting the GO SA into a Nd: GdVO4 laser, both passive Q-switched (QS) and passive Q-switched mode-locked (QML) operations are also attained. The slope efficiency of QS laser is up to 35.6% and the maximum single pulse energy is 1.48 μJ. In particular, the QML pulses can be achieved stably and repeatedly with an average output power of 1.33 W and a pulse energy of 13.2 nJ. Our strategy provides a new concept for improving the modulation stability of graphene-based SAs and promoting their industrial application in pulsed solid-state lasers.

Stable continuous-wave passive mode-locking of diode-end-pumped Nd:GdVO_(4) and Nd:YAG lasers with semiconductor saturable absorber mirrors (SESAMs) are reported. The comparative study shows that the Nd:GdVO_(4) crystal is efficient to decrease the Q-switched mode-locking tendency, and easier to continuouswave (CW) mode lock than Nd:YAG.

1.5-MHz repetition rate passively Q-switched Nd:YVO ₄ laser based on WS ₂ saturable absorber

A transmission-type tungsten disulfide (WS-based saturable absorber (SA) is fabricated and applied to passively Q-switched Nd:YVO4 laser. The WS2 nanosheets are deposited on a quartz substrate by the vertical evaporation method. By inserting the WS2 SA into the plano-concave laser cavity, we achieve 153-ns pulses with an average output power of 1.19 W at 1064 nm. To the best of our knowledge, both of them are the best results among those obtained by the Q-switched solid-state lasers with WS2-based absorbers. The repetition rate ranges from 1.176 MHz to 1.578 MHz. As far as we know, it is the first time that MHz level Q-switched pulses have been generated in all solid state lasers based on low-dimensional materials so far.

1 GHz Repetition Rate CW Mode-locked Nd∶YVO_4 Laser

A diode-pumped CW mode-locked Nd∶YVO4 laser with a repetition rate of 1 GHz was demonstrated. The laser was passively mode locked by a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM). The QML operation was successfully suppressed by using an output coupler with very low transmission (0.8%) and a 2 W LD pump source introducing a small pump spot in the laser crystal. The lasing oscillation threshold was 35 mW and CW mode locking threshold was 0.8 W. The maximum average output power was 210 mW with 1.6 W pump power.

Titanium Dioxide Langmuir–Blodgett Film Saturable Absorber for Passively Q-switched Nd:GdVO₄ Laser

A high-transmittance ultra-thin titanium dioxide (TiO2) film saturable absorber (SA) fabricated by Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technology is reported and used for the first time to obtain passively Q-switched pulses from a solid-state laser. The optical loss of pure TiO ₂ LB film at a wavelength of 1 μm is only 6.5%, and the nonlinear modulation depth, saturation intensity, and non-saturable loss of the entire TiO ₂ SA device are 4.3%, 0.125 MW/cm ² , and 9.8%, respectively. Intrinsic high stability and heat resistance of TiO ₂ nanomaterials contribute to a laser output with average power (2.35 W) and a corresponding laser pulse width and repetition rate of 173 ns and 2.008 MHz, respectively. The laser output with the pulse energy of 1.17 μJ and peak power of 6.76 W indicates the excellent potential of TiO ₂ nanomaterials for applications in solid-state pulsed lasers.
