Printed all-solid flexible microsupercapacitors: towards the general route for high energy storage devices

A novel method for fabricating all-solid flexible microsupercapacitors (MSCs) was proposed and developed by utilizing screen printing technology. A typical printed MSC is composed of a printed Ag electrode, MnO2/onion-like carbon (MnO2/OLC) as active material and a polyvinyl alcohol:H3PO4 (PVA:H3PO4) as solid electrolyte. A capacity of 7.04 mF cm(-2) was achieved for the screen printed MnO2/OLC MSCs at a current density of 20 μA cm(-2). It also showed an excellent cycling stability, with 80% retention of the specific capacity after 1000 cycles. The printed all-solid flexible MSCs exhibited remarkably high mechanical flexibility when the devices were bent to a radius of 3.5 mm. In addition, all-solid MSCs were successfully demonstrated by screen printing technique on various substrates, such as silicon, glass and conventional printing paper. Moreover, the screen printing technique can be extended to other active materials, such as OLC and carbon nanotubes. This method provides a general route for printable all-solid flexible MSCs, which is compatible with the roll-to-roll process for various high performance active materials.

Free standing SnS ₂ nanosheets on 3D graphene foam: an outstanding hybrid nanostructure anode for Li-ion batteries

Two-dimensional (2D) materials are attracting increased research interest due to their unique physical properties and potential for application in various electronic devices. Herein, the combination of 2D materials consisting of vertical aligned tin sulfide (SnS2) nanosheets and three-dimensional graphene (3DG) are designed as a superior functional anode material for energy storage devices using the merits of the two materials. The SnS2/3DG hybrid nanostructure was synthesized via a single-step solvothermal method and further used as a binder-free anode in lithium ion batteries (LIBs). The binder-free SnS2/3DG electrode shows excellent electrochemical performance including superior specific capacity, enhanced rate capability and outstanding cycling stability compared to pure SnS2 and 3DG. SnS2/3DG hybrid nanocomposite electrodes are able to deliver high reversible capacities of 771.2 mAh g−1 and 433.3 mAh g−1 at the current densities of 200 and 1000 mA g−1, respectively. The excellent electrochemical performance of SnS2/3DG nanocomposite is attributed to the synergistic effect between SnS2 and 3DG. These results demonstrate SnS2/3DG nanocomposites as a highly promising anode material for future generation LIBs.

Shape-Controlled Micro/Nanostructures of 9,10-Diphenylanthracene (DPA) and Their Application in Light-Emitting Devices

Two novel shapes of 9,10-diphenylanthracene (DPA) micro/nanostructures: octahedron and sphere together with microrod and nanowire have been synthesized via a surfactant-assisted self-assembling process. These micro/nanostructures have been characterized by UV−vis, fluorescence spectra, X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), and transmission electron microscope (TEM). Our results indicated that the absorption and emission spectra of as-prepared particles were slightly blue-shift when the shape of DPA particles changed from octahedron to microrod and finally to nanowire. This result could be explained by the different growth directions of DPA micro/nanostructures. To study the relationship between shape and devices' performance, the heterojunction light emitting diode (LED) devices of quartz/ITO/organic particles/n-SiC/Ti(10 nm)/Au(120 nm) have been prepared. The testing results showed that the different shapes of DPA micro/nanostructures did affect the performance of diodes and the nanowire was the best shape for the heterojunction light emitting diode (LED) devices.

Si nanocrystal-based triple-layer anti-reflection coating for Si solar cells

A triple-layer anti-reflection coating (TL-ARC) with Si nanocrystals (nc-Si)-dielectric nanocomposite thin film structure is proposed for Si solar cells. The TL-ARC has a graded refractive index (RI) profile of high RI, medium RI, and low RI. Such RI profile is achieved with the structure consisting of a Si3N4 layer embedded with high concentration of nc-Si and another Si3N4 layer embedded with low concentration of nc-Si and a SiO2 layer. The design of the TL-ARC is carried out with the calculation of the effective indices of the high-RI and medium-RI layers with the Maxwell-Garnett effective medium approximation model. Due to the photoluminescence properties of nc-Si embedded in Si3N4 matrix, the TL-ARC has the inherent capability of down-converting ultraviolet photons to low-energy photons that are useful to Si solar cells. The deposition of the TL-ARC on Si solar cell is fabricated with plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition in a single process step. The performance enhancement of Si solar cells by the TL-ARC has been demonstrated by experiments.

Self-assembly of hierarchical MoSx/CNT nanocomposites (2<x<3): towards high performance anode materials for lithium ion batteries

Abstract Two dimension (2D) layered molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) has emerged as a promising candidate for the anode material in lithium ion batteries (LIBs). Herein, 2D MoS x (2 ≤ x ≤ 3) nanosheet-coated 1D multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) nanocomposites with hierarchical architecture were synthesized via a high-throughput solvent thermal method under low temperature at 200°C. The unique hierarchical nanostructures with MWNTs backbone and nanosheets of MoS x have significantly promoted the electrode performance in LIBs. Every single MoS x nanosheet interconnect to MWNTs centers with maximized exposed electrochemical active sites, which significantly enhance ion diffusion efficiency and accommodate volume expansion during the electrochemical reaction. A remarkably high specific capacity (i.e., > 1000 mAh/g) was achieved at the current density of 50 mA g −1 , which is much higher than theoretical numbers for either MWNTs or MoS 2 along (~372 and ~670 mAh/g, respectively). We anticipate 2D nanosheets/1D MWNTs nanocomposites will be promising materials in new generation practical LIBs.

Quenching and Reactivation of Electroluminescence by Charge Trapping and Detrapping in Si-Implanted Silicon Nitride Thin Film

In this brief, quenching of electroluminescence (EL) from Si-implanted silicon nitride (SNR) thin film under a forward bias has been observed. The quenching phenomenon is shown to be due to charge trapping in the defect states involved in the radiative recombination. The composite EL bands have different quenching rates, causing a change in the EL spectrum shape by the EL quenching. Release of the trapped charges by a low-temperature annealing at 120degC or an application of a reverse gate bias can partially recover the quenched EL both in the intensity and spectrum shape. The quenching phenomenon poses a serious challenge to the application of Si-implanted SNR thin films in light-emitting devices.
