With regard to different preparation techniques of inert gas aggregation for Cu and of aqueous chemical methods for ligand stabilised particles of CdS and Cu the structure of nanoparticles is discussed. In the latter case, long needles of micrometer lengths and nanometer diameters are prepared which have the structure of multiply twinned particles like truncated decahedra. For interpretation purposes high resolution electron microscopy was performed together simultaneously with computer simulations by phase grating approximation or multi-slice technique in combination with image processing.

Untersuchungen an kubischem Kupfer(I)sulfid (Digenit) III Zum elastischen Entmischungseffekt in Digenit

Abstract Bei 440°C und 460°C ist an einer Digenitprobe der Wechsel‐ und Gleichstromwiderstand in Abhängigkeit vom Kupferdefizit bestimmt worden. Bei Kupferunterschüssen > 2 Mol.‐% ist das Verhältnis von Wechselstrom‐ und Gleichstromwiderstand eine Zahl ≧ 1; aufgrund der Fehlordnungseigenschaften des Digenits sollte man für das Widerstandsverhältnis eine Zahl ≦ 1 erwarten. Diese Diskrepanz wird mit Hilfe des elastischen Entmischungseffektes gedeutet: Bei der Bestimmung des Gleichstromwiderstandes wird die Probe polarisiert, d. h. es stellt sich in der Probe eine Verteilung des Kupferunterschusses ein. Da die Dichte des Digenits vom Metalldefizit abhängt, tritt in der Probe ein Gefälle der elastischen Spannung auf. Der Einfluß der elastischen Deformation auf den Gleichstromwiderstand wird abgeschätzt; die Ergebnisse von Rechnung und Experiment scheinen befriedigend übereinzustimmen.

Damping of Molecular Motion on a Solid Substrate: Evidence for Electron-Hole Pair Creation

The damping of molecular motion relative to a solid substrate was investigated by high-resolution vibrational spectroscopy in the far-infrared regime. For octane adsorbed on a hydrogen-passivated Ru(0001) surface the experimental linewidths observed by He-atom scattering for the frustrated translation normal to the surface are in accord with a damping by phonon emission, but a strong broadening is found for the clean Ru substrate. This enhanced friction is related to an increase in the rate of electron-hole $(e\ensuremath{-}h)$ pair creation due to the presence of hybrid metal-molecule electronic states which are absent for the hydrogen passivated surface. Data from near-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy provide direct evidence for these differences in electronic structure. Results from IR spectroscopy strongly suggest that the soft C-H bands observed for these systems are also related to the formation of these hybrid electronic states.

FORMATION OF ORDERED MOLECULAR OVERLAYERS BY A TEMPERATURE-INDUCED SURFACE REACTION: HEXABUTYLOXYTRIPHENYLENE ON Cu(111)

Molecular monolayers obtained by the adsorption of hexabutyloxytriphenylene (HBT) on Cu (111) were investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS). Adsorption at room temperature results in the formation of a disordered layer of physisorbed molecules. Annealing at temperatures of 600 K is found to induce a chemical reaction of the molecule with the substrate, leading to a desorption of the butyl fragments. This chemical reaction is accompanied by the formation of a highly ordered, well-defined oxytriphenylene layer which is stable for temperatures of up to 600 K.
