Enhanced Structure Stability of Au Nanobipyramids by an In Situ Customized Silver Armor

Revealing the structure stability and evolution of gold nanocrystals at the atomic scale is crucial to their versatile applications; however, the fundamental mechanism remains elusive due to the lack of in situ characterizations. In this work, the structural evolution of two types of Au nanobipyramids (Au NBPs) at elevated temperatures is monitored through in situ electron microscopy analysis, and there is a sharp distinction between their structure stability despite that they possess the same crystalline structure. Detailed material characterization reveals that the surface alloying of residual Ag with Au (customized Ag armor) can greatly inhibit the Au atom diffusion and contribute remarkably to the stability and surface-enhanced Raman scattering improvement. Moreover, the structure of the Au NBPs is further enhanced when the vulnerable tips are selectively coated with an oxide shell (Cu2O) to form a dumbbell-shaped nanostructure, which would undergo a completely different structure evolution at elevated temperatures.

Chromosomal localization of mutated genes in non-syndromic familial thyroid cancer

Familial non-medullary thyroid carcinoma (FNMTC) is a type of thyroid cancer characterized by genetic susceptibility, representing approximately 5% of all non-medullary thyroid carcinomas. While some cases of FNMTC are associated with familial multi-organ tumor predisposition syndromes, the majority occur independently. The genetic mechanisms underlying non-syndromic FNMTC remain unclear. Initial studies utilized SNP linkage analysis to identify susceptibility loci, including the 1q21 locus, 2q21 locus, and 4q32 locus, among others. Subsequent research employed more advanced techniques such as Genome-wide Association Study and Whole Exome Sequencing, leading to the discovery of genes such as IMMP2L , GALNTL4 , WDR11-AS1 , DUOX2 , NOP53 , MAP2K5 , and others. But FNMTC exhibits strong genetic heterogeneity, with each family having its own pathogenic genes. This is the first article to provide a chromosomal landscape map of susceptibility genes associated with non-syndromic FNMTC and analyze their potential associations. It also presents a detailed summary of variant loci, characteristics, research methodologies, and validation results from different countries.

Twelve-Component Free-Standing Nanoporous High-Entropy Alloys for Multifunctional Electrocatalysis

Nanostructured high-entropy alloys (HEAs) with tunable compositions have attracted intensive scientific attention on their unique structural, catalytic, and energy-storage capabilities. In this work, we introduce a straightforward two-step fabrication procedure to synthesize free-standing single phase multicomponent nanoporous HEAs consisting of 12 or 16 different elements including both noble and non-noble metals. The electrocatalytic results reveal that the synergistic elemental combinations of such HEAs with a fine porous structure give rise to enhanced hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalytic activities superior to the commercial Pt/C and, at the same time, enhanced oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalytic activity over the commercial IrO2 catalyst. The demonstrated multifunctional catalytic performance of these free-standing nanoporous HEAs would facilitate large current densities in the water splitting reactions, rechargeable Zn-air batteries, and many other catalytic, sensing, and energy applications.

Self-Floating Nanoporous High-Entropy Oxides with Tunable Bandgap for Efficient Solar Seawater Desalination

Nanoporous high-entropy oxide (np-HEO) powders with tunable composition are integrated with a poly(vinylidene fluoride) network to create self-floating solar absorber films for seawater desalination. By progressively increasing the element count, we obtain an optimized 9-component AlNiCoFeCrMoVCuTi-Ox. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal a remarkable reduction in its bandgap, facilitating the light-induced migration of electrons to conduction bands to generate electron-hole pairs, which recombine to produce heat. Simultaneously, the intricate light reflection and refraction pathways, shaped by the nanoporous structure, coupled with the reduced thermal conductivity attributed to the suboptimal crystalline quality of the np-HEO ensure an effective conversion of captured light into thermal energy. Consequently, all these films demonstrate an impressive absorbance rate exceeding 93% across the 250-2500 nm spectral range. Under one sun, the surface temperature of the 9-component film rapidly rises to 110 °C within 90 s with a high pure water evaporation rate of 2.16 kg m-2 h-1.
